It’s strange for me to admit this out loud (or in writing), but I’m not big on summer. Sure, I love the carefree idea of the season, but having grown up in Florida where summer (read: blazing, unthinkable heat and humidity) is basically a constant, I think a part of me just kind of rebelled against it, particularly with my wardrobe. I was that girl in jeans and a long-sleeve shirt complete with cardigan in the middle of July, sweating miserably but refusing to throw on a sun dress.

Recently, I shared with readers what my ideal summer capsule looks like and now it’s time to go shopping (even if it’s just in your own closet)! To start, check out all the resources for my selected tops, plus a few extra. As a reminder, 17 was the number to hit for tees, blouses and light outwear. To some, that may seem like a lot (or more than you even currently have), but tops and layering pieces are the key to creating a curated wardrobe that is extremely flexible.

I like to think of the dress as the chameleon of the closet. Pair a short summery dress with a Panama hat and Converse sneakers and you’re ready to walk the farmer’s market; strap on some metallic-heeled sandals and throw on a pair of statement earrings and you’re ready for date night. With that logic, perhaps we should all have a dress-only wardrobe?

If I had to pick the one item in my closet that had the highest return on investment, it would absolutely, positively, be shoes. Apart from taking the hardest beating day in and day out, they can really amp up the wattage of any outfit. I repeat, any outfit. Take a black tee/black pants get up, for instance. Worn with low-top sneakers, you have yourself pretty casual weekend wear, but lace up some cobalt blue gladiator heels and, just like that, you’re outrageously fierce.

The needs of your skin change throughout the year: While winter might require a heavy moisturizer just so your face doesn’t crack in half, summer calls for higher SPFs, lighter face creams and no-fuss, glow-inducing make-up that stays put in the sweatiest of situations.
