Before: All-white bathroom

Although it’s one of the smaller rooms in the home, the bathroom is one we spend a surprising amount of time in. And a dark, dingy bathroom isn’t where anyone wants to be.

The problem? Renovating the space is no small feat. Things like plumbing restrictions, tile work, and hardware can send costs skyrocketing in a flash—unless you think creatively. These Apartment Therapy readers’ before and after photos prove that it’s possible to totally transform the bathroom without draining your bank account. Here, our 10 favorite bathroom redos from 2020.

1. A ’90s-Style Bathroom Gets a Cheery Farmhouse Modern Refresh

This bathroom was so dated and poorly maintained that it felt much smaller than it was. But a simple facelift that included fresh paint, new hardware and lighting, and a sponge-painted diamond print on the walls made a world of a difference—without any tricky layout rejiggering.

2. A Dated Bathroom Becomes a Serene, Plant-Filled Oasis for £2,000

With just over £2,000, a drab bathroom with an oddly-shaped tub and wall-to-wall carpeting (really!) became something that looks straight out of a spa. It turns out, all it needed was ornate black-and-white floor tiles, white subway tile walls, and new soothing green-painted paneling on the walls.

3. This Bathroom’s the Same Size, But Feels Twice as Big

Dark colors and a built-in tub made this 12-by-14-foot bathroom feel much smaller than it really was. To change this, the designer lightened up the colors and added modern touches like black window trim and gold hardware.

4. A £250 Redo Turns a White Bathroom into a Colorful Plant Haven

To infuse a very boring bathroom with a much-needed dose of personality, this homeowner turned to vivid colors. She swiped the walls with a sunny yellow and gave the tub surround a bubblegum pink refresh. An array of houseplants and some boho decor choices bring the whole look together.

5. A Pink Carpeted (!) Bathroom Is Totally Transformed for $2,325

This homeowner swapped outdated design choices, including pink wall-to-wall carpet, for neutral white and cream tones paired with natural wood for a light and airy bathroom refresh.

6. A $1000 Refresh Gives This Early 2000s Bathroom Boho Vibes

Rather than knock everything out, the homeowner used paint and swapped out a new faucet, a crisp white vanity top, and gold hardware to give this space an unbelievable face lift for just about $1,000.

7. This Boho-Happy Bathroom Redo Shows How Far $160 Can Go

If you’re looking for a very inexpensive fix for a drab bath, take inspiration from this redo and look to colorful wallpaper and a few DIYs, like a floating shelf and leather cabinet pulls.

8. A ’90s-Era Powder Room Gets a High/Low Patterned Makeover

This bathroom shows what a few luxe features—like wainscoting on the walls, brass fixtures, and wallpaper—can do to liven up a small and uninspired powder room.

9. A Rental Bathroom Redo that Looks Downright Luxurious

If you think you’re stuck with a gross or boring bathroom just because you rent, think again. Simple and inexpensive swaps, like lighting, accessories, and temporary wallpaper, make a refresh totally permissible and within budget.

10. This New Bathroom Is Straight Out of a Fancy Hotel

A dramatic floor-to-ceiling subway tile, new vanity mirrors,  unique bowl-shaped sconces, and a natural wood double vanity make this a five-star bathroom anyone would covet.
