DIY Project Idea: Painted Black & White Striped Walls
Here’s a fun way to get a little zip in your life — why not paint stripes in your home office? Architecturally, this was once a big closet. And though there’s a skylight above, the room has no window on the world to speak of, so this is a perfect opportunity for some uplift in the decorating department. By adding stripes here, we’re making this space special in a private way, like opening a small jewel box.

5 Tiny Kitchens with Style
A tiny kitchen (in my opinion) is one with a small refrigerator, a sink and a stove, with little to no counter space. I’ve had plenty of tiny kitchens in previous apartments and despite their coziness, I always dreamed of the day I would have something a bit bigger — in case I might want to make two pies for the holidays that year. However, I would give that dream right up for the chance to cook a meal in one of these stylish kitchens.

Before & After: Kristi Tries a New Technique: Cerusing
Well this is a new one on us! Kristie loved the shape and texture of this oak table but didn’t love the heavy-handed 90s orange-toned varnish, so she gathered up her courage and tried a technique called cerusing. Wait for it… Cerusing is where the grain of the wood is opened up by scrubbing with a metal brush. Then the wood is stained and the grain is filled with a contrasting pigment (usually white). Oak and other hard woods are the best to ceruse.

Mandi’s Antique & Modernly Mixed Bungalow
Name: Mandi Smethells Location: St. Paul, Minnesota Our home is a 1920s bungalow in the Como Park neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. We were definitely looking for a home with character, and St. Paul is not short on them.

Before & After: A Cheery, Spring-Like Vintage Vanity Chair Rescue
This teeny little wood and upholstered vanity chair on casters was in a sorry state when Kathy found it on a neighbor’s curb on garbage day: the wooden back was broken off completely (the hand is holding it up in the photo above!), the springs damaged and the upholstery tired and dated. It would be a big job, but Kathy knew she could count on the help of her talented family. The result is a darling and spring-like update!

But there is not much to love about it, either. So when One Kings Lane editor Kerstin, who had the Apartment Kitchen, met stylist Megan Pflug, who was looking to do an “easy but stylish” kitchen before and after, she jumped at the chance. Before & After: MCM Chair Gets an Upholstery Redo
This old vinyl MCM style chair was asking to be rescued. Vinyl cushions paired with good bones and clean lines — need I say more? For 20 bucks it was mine, and I set off on my first attempt to reupholster a worthy chair. For my first re-upholstery job, I’m happy with the results. The structure of the chair was very sturdy, and the condition of padding was fair. I carefully un-stitched the vinyl and saved it to use as a pattern. The frame had to be sanded and re-stained.
