Before & After: 3 Identical Sofas, 1 Large Living Room Makeover
Minneapolis designer Jay Nuhring has another no-shopping makeover for us. This time, his client has a huge living room, three of the same sofa, and a wall of books that looks a bit bland. Jay applied the use-what-you-have motto and created a whole new space within a space! From Jay: This project was really easy and really affordable. Nothing new was purchased for this living room makeover. Everything was shopped and sourced from what the homeowner already had in the house.

Amanda’s Merge of West and East Coast
Name: Amanda Location: West Village, Manhattan, New York City I live on an iconic street in an iconic neighborhood in New York City, in what I would call a classic New York apartment. It’s small. It’s technically a one bedroom, although the bedroom only fits a bed, the kitchen is part of the hallway, and I’ve definitely had to find ways to make do with the space. It also has so much New York character — an exposed brick wall, wood floors, and more.

Before & After: A Revamped Vanity (Without Using Paint!)
Fran over at Fall for DIY had this old-school vanity table and wanted to make it over. Although you’d think she’s reach right for the paint can, you’d also be wrong. She came up with an alternative method to give it a new look…. Here’s Fran: I must admit I’ve made my fair share of makeover messes whilst attempting to create a home interior I love.

A Gallery of Gorgeous Attic Bedrooms
I’m willing to bet that most people, no matter where they live, if asked to draw a house will draw something with a pitched roof, a little bit like this. I think there’s something about a steeply pitched roof that feels deeply comforting to us, so much so that it has become part of our very idea of home.

The #1 Most Repeated Piece of Advice From Our House Tours
Time and time again we hear our House Tour subjects tell us the same piece of “best advice” when they fill out our style survey. So what do these decor savvy folks do that they think you should do, too? We might as well let them tell you. As Brook Baker Eide concicely puts it: Even when you’ve got the shiny keys to a brand new apartment and you’re raring to go paint every wall and decorate every corner and get every little thing into place, don’t.

Do You (Can You?) Sleep In A Twin Bed?

Before & After: Fitting Square Tiles on a Round Balcony
Andréa wasn’t a fan of her drab concrete balcony, and wasn’t entertaining outside like she wanted. She decided to give it a makeover, and came up with a smart solution to fill in the gaps square decking tiles made on a round balcony: From Andréa: I really like the apartment where I live. It is bright with its large windows, located on a very quiet area, there is a train station only 2 walking minutes from it and very good connections to the city.

Such was the case for Sarah’s bedroom, and she enlisted the help of best friend and former roommate Katie to help give the small space a makeover. From Katie: My best friend Sarah has been living in the same rental apartment for over 6 years, and it was time for a refresh. Before & After: Historic Rowhouse Ditches Sad Siding
Abigail’s fixer-upper stood out—and not in a good way. Sometime during its 100-year history, someone had slapped putty-hued vinyl siding on the front, which would be less jarring if it wasn’t one of many attached brick rowhouses! Seduced by the siren song of free, Angelica scooped up this cabinet—as the panels started falling off. Before & After: Dining Room Goes Really Deep
Erin’s dining room suffered the same fate as most of its kind. Hardly used except for special evenings, it was a blah purgatory for clutter and unused stuff. Whitney’s “More Is More” Style Studio
Name: Whitney Location: Gramercy Park, New York, New York There is a lot going on in my little studio, in line with my “more is more” style. I like large patterns and bright colors and didn’t want to shy away from them just because my space is so small (450 square feet). The bathroom in Amy’s Brooklyn Heights condo wasn’t terrible or falling apart. But after living there for a while, she started to notice how the finishes picked by the previous owner weren’t in line with the style of the rest of her home, and the vanity cabinet and countertop extension were making the narrow bathroom feel unnecessarily cramped.
