Forget Resolutions: Embrace a Yearly Mantra Instead
I am awesome at sticking to New Year’s resolutions. For about two weeks. Then my resolve softens followed by a predictable petering out of whatever habit I was trying to form, a short bout of self-recrimination and, finally, a return to the former status quo. So a few years ago I ditched the idea of resolutions and came up with something better…a mantra. The first mantra I adopted was very simple: Use it.

Before & After: A Living Room Gets “Light and Bright”
This little corner recess in my rental apartment living room had gone through many changes over the years. That is until I found this gel fuel fireplace that was within my budget. Once it was delivered and put in its place, I realized it looked very small and toy like. My dad built a small hearth for it to sit on and the bookcases to fill in the empty space on either side. I was quite happy with the outcome, at the time.

Uniquely Interesting: One-Of-A-Kind Details from Real-Life Homes
Even after countless House Tours over the years, there are still homes that stop us in our tracks with their unique art, architecture, and… Skeeball machines. Join us in celebrating 30 of the year’s most fascinating features, including a hydraulic bed, copper walls, graffiti, and, of course, a cat bridge! Joey started using Airbnb 5 years ago, when he lived in a much smaller apartment (but in which there was still, of course, room for his Skeeball machine).

Our Favorite Entryways & Foyers
As the barrier between the sanctuary of home and the busy world outside, entryways have to work hard to filter out all the junk (mail) and random things that want to work their way inside. And since it’s the first thing you and your guests see when they walk in, it needs to be beautiful and set the tone for the rest of the space. These ten homes from our house tours get it right, with seriously welcoming entry rooms. Come on in and take a look. Love these rooms and want to see more?

No More Tiers: 10 Fun & Budget-Friendly Wedding Desserts that Aren’t Cake
Nothing about planning my nuptials gave me sticker shock quite like looking at the cost of a wedding cake. So… we scrapped it. Traditionalists might balk at the idea of having a wedding without a big white cake, but I’m here from the other side to tell you: It’s totally OK if you’d rather have donuts or cookies or–like me–popsicles instead. Your wedding is a chance to choose a dessert that speaks to your unique taste.

Before & After: Bland Bookshelves Become a Crisp Credenza
I love to build things and have built all kinds of shelving, but I admit I’m all for a shortcut that makes my life easier (and in this case cheaper). These $10 garage sale bookshelves I found are solid wood, well-built and side by side were the perfect size to create a credenza. There is no way I could have built them myself for $10, the wood alone would have cost at least $50, not to mention the time and labor.

It’s also a reflection on tradition: the new traditions we create as we build our adult lives and the nostalgia-filled traditions that take us back to our childhoods, to that Christmas-morning feeling when we were six, to shared customs with loved ones, and to people and places that may only live on in memory.
