Smart Shopping: Are IKEA Stoves Actually a Good Deal?
You may already buy things like bookcases and sheepskin rugs from IKEA, but did you know you can buy kitchen appliances there too? If you’re not sure about making such a big budget purchase at the big blue store, we did a little research to see how IKEA’s line of ranges compares to products from other manufacturers. Here’s what we found out.

Look We Absolutely Love: Dark Colors for the Bathroom
After getting burned by Eisenhower-era pinks and olive greens, we’ve been playing it safe, color-wise, in the bathroom for a long time. Subway tile and white walls dominate modern bathrooms, with maybe a little grey tile on the floor for contrast. But that may all be about to change. More and more now I’m starting to see bathrooms that embrace the darker, moodier colors that are already so popular in other parts of the house. Take a look at these nine stylish examples.

Before & After: A New Kitchen (and Bedroom) for a Little Brooklyn Apartment
When Sarah and Oleg connected their Prospect Heights apartment’s galley kitchen to the living room, and turned the adjoining dining nook into an office, they had no idea how perfectly timed their renovation was. They found out they were expecting soon thereafter and the newly separate office became a perfect new home for two baby girls. The apartment was set up with a long, narrow kitchen running parallel to the living room, and separated by a wall.

The Secret to Effective Small Spaces, as Proven by Nancy’s Tiny New York Bathroom
My little bathroom is one of the things I love most about my little New York apartment, but unfortunately, it does not have much in the way of storage. As someone very devoted to the idea of order, if not always the practice of it, this troubles me a great deal, and so I’ve come up with a few solutions that allow me to fit a whole bathroom’s worth of things into my small, storage-challenged space, all (mostly) out of sight.

How a Tiny London Loft Fits a Lot of Living Into 500 Square Feet
What happens when an architect and a stylist meet, fall in love, and tackle the renovation of a 500-square-foot London apartment together? Some really beautiful details—and some really clever small space solutions. The innovations begin in the entry hall, which passes between the apartment’s bedroom and bathroom on its way to the main living space.

Need to Know Info: All About IKEA Dishwashers
IKEA has long been a strong option for kitchen cabinets, and now they offer appliances too, so you can order your entire kitchen from the Swedish retailer. How do IKEA dishwashers stack up against other models at similar price points? We did a little research to find out. IKEA makes their appliances in partnership with Whirlpool, and all of their dishwashers come with a five-year warranty (except for the LAGAN, which has only a one-year warranty).

Before & After: A Neglected Brooklyn Backyard Looks Like a Resort Now
It’s that time of year again when the weather starts to get ever so slightly warmer and you suddenly have hope that winter might someday end. It’s also that time of year when people start thinking about outdoor projects, so this transformation of a neglected Brooklyn backyard is particularly timely. Having your own private backyard is something that most New Yorkers can only dream of. K.V.

Before & After: A Classic Kitchen Update 40 Years in the Making
I’ve heard it said that it’s helpful to live in your home before renovating, to get a feel for how you actually use the space and what you really want from the renovation. Well, this Upper East Side homeowner lived in his apartment for 40 years. So he had a pretty good idea. What he did want: A fresh new kitchen, but one whose traditional feel would integrate seamlessly with the rest of the apartment. What he didn’t want: a completely open-concept kitchen.

Five Thousand Years in Bed: A Brief History of Where We Sleep
The average person spends about a third of their life in bed, but in discussions of history we seldom ever mention sleeping (unless, perhaps, someone had the misfortune to be murdered while doing it) and even more infrequently mention the place where the sleeping happens.

Don’t Waste an Inch: Ideas for Using a Really Narrow Room
Have you got a spare room, a bit of hallway, the loft above a stairway—any particularly small sliver of space in your home that’s searching for its purpose? Narrow rooms can pose a special challenge, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t make the most of that space. Here’s a little inspiration for getting the most out of a (really, really) narrow room. Even the narrowest of rooms can make a great workspace, as evidenced by this interior from David Boyle.

The Italian Mid-Century Modern Designer I’m Only Just Learning About
As a lover of mid-century design, I’ve long been familiar with the work of designers like Charles and Ray Eames, Hans Wegner, and Eero Sarinen. But I confess that it was only recently—thanks, Pinterest!—that I became acquainted with the works of another mid-century great, the Italian designer Gio Ponti. Like a lot of furniture designers of that era, Gio Ponti was also an architect.

Your Favorite Designers at Home: The Heralded Alvar Aalto’s Unassuming Helsinki Abode
Alvar Aalto, the Finnish architect and designer of the ubiquitous 3-legged stool (that spawned a perhaps even more ubiquitous IKEA knockoff), was also the creator of a lovely, very modern and yet very cozy, home on the outskirts of Helsinki. Often, the homes designers create for themselves tend toward the grandiose, but this one could be appropriately classified as humble, even subtle.

Before & After: A Teeny-Tiny Kitchen Gets Some Serious Style
One of the fun things about working at Apartment Therapy is seeing how much potential there is in even the smallest of spaces. At 25 square feet, this barely-there kitchen is, I think, the smallest kitchen we’ve ever featured in a Before & After — which makes the end results even more impressive. A home with a 25 square-foot kitchen might sound a little insane to people from anywhere else, but in New York, you take what you can get.

Match Point: 7 Rooms Proving Tone-on-Tone Color Works
Why mix colors when just one will do? It might fly in the face of typical interior design advice, which advocates balance above all things, but sometimes a room that fully embraces a single color can be strangely delightful. Layering the same color in different shades—or a handful of colors in very similar hues—can create a rich, immersive design experience that’s as stylish as it is unexpected.

Everything You Need to Know About Biedermeier Style
More than a century before the Eameses created their simple, honest furniture designed to appeal to the everyman, a style of furnishings emerged in Germany, one whose simplicity, visual lightness, and playful geometries were a herald of things to come. Biedermeier is notable for being the first decorative movement that was created by and for the middle class, and even today, after two centuries, these pieces still feel surprisingly fresh and modern.

Supergraphics: Is this OTT ’70s Design Trend Making a Comeback?
One of the perks of having a mother who was very into both garage sales and interior design was growing up in a house filled with wacky old design books from the 1960s and ’70s. In their pages, I was exposed to many strange and wonderful things, not least among them supergraphics, the crazy stripes and arcs and rainbows that covered every surface of a room, irrespective of walls or floors or furniture.

Dream With Me: 5 Beautiful New York Apartments I Will Never Be Able to Afford
It is a truth universally acknowledged that anyone living in an apartment in New York must be on the hunt for a better apartment. Since moving to the city, my mild interest in real estate has grown into a bona fide hobby…if you can call shopping for things you can’t afford a hobby. Knitting is a hobby, which could result in sweaters and blankets and baby socks.

Built from a Kit: A Brief History of Sears Catalog Homes
Once, I bought a bag of dirt on the internet. I continue to be amazed by the variety of things you can buy on Amazon, but long ago, in the pages of the Sears Catalog, Amazon’s predecessor, you could even buy a house. Between the years of 1908 and 1942, the Sears Roebuck company sold more than 70,000 of these Sears Catalog homes, which were built in locations all over the country.

Why is Mid-Century Modern Furniture So Damn Popular?
When I graduated from college in 2005, and began furnishing my first apartment, mid-century modern design was just beginning to capture the popular imagination. Twelve years later, the trend shows no signs of slowing down, and the very designers and tastemakers once responsible for its popularity are baffled. Why hasn’t the furniture-buying public moved on to something else? Steven Kurutz of The New York Times asks, “Why Won’t Mid-century Design Die?

A Sneaky Way to Create a (Really Big) Closet in Your Small Space
Living in a tiny apartment? Short on closet space? Here’s a clever way to make a walk-in (yes, walk-in!) closet in your small apartment, and create a cozy spot for sleeping at the same time. You’ve probably guessed from the photo above that the solution is lofting your bed. The Teeny-Tiny Paris Apartment of Your Wildest Dreams
I love tiny apartments and Paris apartments, so a tiny Paris apartment is the best of both worlds. Designer Marianne Evennou has a history of bringing a moody, stylish look to even the smallest of spaces, and this little pied-à-terre in Le Marais is no exception. Lofting the bed is a time-honored trick for saving valuable square footage in small spaces, but Marianne takes it one step further by turning the access stair for the loft into a design feature.

Colorful Bathroom Tiles Are Coming Back (& They’re Inspired by This Unexpected Decade)
Looking at pictures of vintage bathrooms and kitchens is one of my favorite hobbies, and lately, I’ve been noticing something very interesting: When it comes to style and over-the-top glamour, nothing beats ’20s bathrooms. Sure, the ’80s were wild, but bathrooms from 1920s are… something else. Let’s take a look at these Art Deco beauties. Above: This Art Deco style bath from 1929 is the perfect embodiment (in bathroom form) of the Roaring Twenties.

Before & After: Big Changes for a Little Bathroom
When Sophia and Leon bought their 3-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom Manhattan apartment, there wasn’t a lot going on in the petite second bathroom — but what was going on looked a little like a gas station bathroom: fine for a gas station, but not for a home. The yellowing wall tile was distinctly uninspiring, and dingy grout made the floor tiles look dirty no matter how many times they were cleaned.

A Brief History of Brutalism, the Architectural Movement Loved by Critics and Hated by (Almost) Everyone Else
From the BBC and CNN and now the New York Times, the word has come: Brutalism, perhaps the most reviled of all architectural styles, is back. Here’s what you need to know about the movement associated with hulking concrete masses and Soviet apartment buildings, beloved of critics and the architectural elite but despised by pretty much everyone else. I first became aware of Brutalism in the way that many architecture students do: through the structures on their own college campus.

The Swedes certainly know how to do small spaces. Case in point: this small but stylish apartment, whose living room cupboard conceals a clever surprise. The Definitive List of Euphemisms for the Bathroom, Ranked
Like anything associated with bodily functions, the bathroom has garnered more than its fair share of nicknames, some euphemistic, some far more colorful. (The word ‘bathroom,’ when used to refer to the place where you use the toilet, is in itself a euphemism, implying that something far more delicate than eliminating is going on.) But not all of them are created equal.

Inglenooks: The Beautiful Unicorn House Feature of My Dreams
This morning, I woke up to the charming banging and burbling of my radiator coming back to life. Cold weather is here! Or, as I like to think about it, inglenook season. Before & After: A Modern Update for a Brooklyn Bathroom
Remember Sophia and Leon’s Manhattan apartment? Last week we witnessed the transformation of their kitchen, and this week we’re looking at the overhaul of the unit’s main bathroom. While the old bathroom wasn’t yet completely falling apart, it had poorly installed, mismatched fixtures — and the fact that it needed to serve for three people meant extra storage space would be welcome.

The 7 Swoon-Worthiest Shipping Container Homes
I think part of the reason shipping container houses are so appealing is that building a house from shipping containers is like the grown-up equivalent of making a really sweet fort from cardboard boxes — you have succeeded in making something awesome from something that you just found, something that would otherwise be in the trash. (Of course, the actual reality of shipping container homes is a bit more complicated than that — but there’s no denying they have a certain draw.

Before & After: A Dingy Brooklyn Kitchen Brightens Up
Prior to their renovation, Laura and Matthew’s kitchen had a few problems common to lots of NYC apartments: a tiny footprint, not enough storage space, and cabinets caked with years’ and years’ worth of paint. As you can see, the cabinets in their galley kitchen had taken on an unusual texture, and the oven was positioned about 18 inches from the opposite countertop. Definitely time for a change.

Before & After: A New Look for a “Sunburn-Striped” Bathroom
There were some great things that happened, design-wise, in the 70s, but this bathroom was not one of them. The problems with the bathroom went beyond the cosmetic.

Old House, New Tricks: See How 3 Gorgeous Old Houses Were Outfitted for a New Century

This Small, Dark-Walled Studio Apartment is Proof that Rules are Made to Be Broken
When decorating a small space, the conventional wisdom is to use light colors to make the space seem as large as possible. This Swedish — of course it’s Swedish — studio has a separate kitchen, and a rather large, high-ceilinged space that serves as both the living room and bedroom.
