Name: Søren (4 months)
Location: Chicago, IL (Logan Square)

We started on Søren’s room before anyone knew his sex, so we kept it very gender-neutral. The gray and yellow nursery has certainly been done, but we put our own spin on it with the concept of weather.

We built the cloud shelves ourselves with a jig-saw and spray paint. The window cornice we made from some boards in the basement and upholstered with chevron fabric reminiscent of lighting. The art above the crib was made ourselves, with the exclusion of the alphabet color-wheel, which was a gift, and the Charley Harper prints, which are actually postcards.

It is a small room and we already had furniture that we wanted to keep, so we simply re-purposed it. The vanity was my great-aunt’s and the tiny drawers are perfect for cloth diapers and tiny clothes. We don’t have a formal changing table, which was surprising to some of our family members, but the twin bed is a good height and provides more space to play during diaper changes. We just keep all the supplies handy in a basket. The crib was the result of much research and ended up coming from Walmart’s website. The rocking chair is a Shaker kit, and was finished at the eleventh hour by my mother while Søren was still in the hospital. Due to space limitations, we don’t have a bookshelf. Instead we are using the chicken-wire baskets from CB2 for storage, which mesh well with our secondary theme of chickens (inspired by our small backyard flock).

Most of the fabric in the room is from Fabric.com. I’d still like to find (or make, if I ever get any free time) the perfect quilt for the twin bed. The current one is simply the reverse of one we’ve had since our college days. Some of the best parts of the room are not immediately visible – honeycomb shades on the window for insulation, lights on dimmers, no-VOC paints, a closet that we framed out and built ourselves. Søren seems to enjoy the bright yellow stripes on the wall, as well as the black and white contrast details.

We hope that the room is detailed enough to be interesting for awhile, but also simple enough to switch around when the time comes.
