If only the universe were a little more accommodating, every time you added a new person to your family, a new room would magically be added to your abode. Alas, it is not so. But the good news is that, for a while at least, tiny people do not take up very much space, so in the same way that you can morph part of a living room into a home office or a closet into a (grown-up) bedroom, you can carve out a spot for your little one.

My task was simple, or so it seemed: create a chic, boyish nursery for my second baby. It should’ve been easy – I’ve been designing and decorating kids’ rooms and nurseries for years – well before I had my first child and fully understood what and who they were for: the parents. I’ve researched and reviewed baby and kids’ furniture – I know what’s out there but more importantly, I know what I like.

Sometimes the kitchen table will suffice, but if you’re tired of cleaning up math books and stray pencils every time you want to eat dinner, it may be time for a dedicated work space for you little one. Not only will it provide a home for their burgeoning backpack, it will give them a space to focus on that homework, complete that art project, and write in that journal. The retailer is launching a new brand called Cloud Island, and it is as dreamy as its name. As if Target wasn’t already a one stop shop for new parents, they’re really going all in with this collection.

Be prepared, upon diving into this slideshow, to be uncomfortably jealous of babies, toddlers, and teenagers. From neutrals to pastels and beyond.

Creating a gallery wall is a great way to display a myriad collection of art, framed or otherwise, and more and more I’m seeing them popping up in nurseries and children’s rooms. Installing one can be a bit of an art as you balance different sizes and mediums, but they also allow a ton of creativity. The example above is a mega (awesome) gallery wall, but don’t be intimidated by it. Choose a smaller wall or partial wall to fill with the art you’ve been collecting.

When I was in college, my roommate and I got a loft bed system, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Not only did we have lots of floor space to hang out and study, I loved having the privacy and coziness of my own secret bed platform. For small spaces, a loft can be a great way to open up floor space, but even if you don’t feel you need the extra room, a loft can be a great hideaway for a kid.

Some of us have a little birdhouse in our soul and others hang them in the nursery. They’re inexpensive, completely customizable and what could better symbolize the “nesting stage” than a birdhouse? If you really wanted to start from scratch you could build your own birdhouses, but they are also readily available (and inexpensive) at craft stores like Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, etc. Decorate with paint, washi tape, or decoupaged paper or fabric.

The only time I’ve ever slept in a bunk bed was at summer camp, and I loved it. While most of us aren’t sleeping away in cabins, everyone can use space-saving furniture. It seems that, increasingly, it’s becoming the norm for kids to have their own bedrooms, especially if there’s adequate space for it. But what if you have two rooms, two kids, and no playroom? Is it a better use of the space to have the kids share a bedroom? In my experience, young children don’t feel much of a need for a private bedroom. They would rather have ample space to play.

For some of us there’s no place like home, but for others wanderlust reigns supreme. Naturally the latter want to pass on their love of travel to their little ones, and what better place to start than where they’ll be spending much of their first few years of life – the nursery.

I don’t know about you, but when I think of a shared kids’ bedroom, my mind immediately goes to two twin beds side by side, or maybe bunk beds. (Or if you’re as unlucky as my sister and I were, a shared full bed. We often daydreamed about building a wall right down the middle of the bed!) So, you’ve decided your kids are going to share a room which means you have two beds (or a bed + crib) to fit into the room. The size and shape of the room may guide or dictate where you place the beds, but it’s worth taking a look at some different bed layouts to see if they spark inspiration for you. Probably the most traditional layout, this formation has a nice visual symmetry and conveys a sense of each child’s claim to the space being equal.

I’m starting to find that my own daughter is beginning to gather collections of her own — shiny rocks, plastic princesses, and sticks, to name a few.

They’re everywhere! And why shouldn’t they be? Moroccan poufs add an incredible pop of color, are comfy to sit on, and handy for Mom to pop her feet up on while feeding. In our neighborhood, it seems you can hear both the collective groans and cheers as the children in each home receive their teacher assignments for the upcoming school year. Whether or not your children snagged the teachers of their dreams, you can make heading back-to-school a positive experience. One way to build excitement for the upcoming school year is to create a special workspace just for them.

If you’re looking to add color, pattern, or texture to a kids room in a rental, don’t despair! Even with requisite white (or bland beige) walls, statement curtains can come to the rescue: 1. Colorful walls are cheerful, and light walls can be peaceful, but I think dark walls are soothing and cozy. Those two adjectives sound just right for a little one’s room. I’ve recently transitioned a guest bedroom with an almost-black accent wall to serve as a nursery. Although for a minute I thought the existing color might seem overwhelming or unhappy, I quickly realized it was a soothing and yet modern backdrop for baby. (Photos to come, once I finish the room!) The crib is often one of the first purchases a family makes in preparation for welcoming a child home. Some people don’t sweat it and pick something quickly and without fuss. Others hem and haw…and then hem and haw some more. Personally, I love seeing products in real homes before I buy them. Just because you can’t actually make a room bigger, doesn’t mean you can’t trick the eye into making it appear and feel bigger. One of the most effective ways to do this is to draw the eye upward toward the ceiling making the walls seem higher and giving the room an air of expansiveness. Personally, I couldn’t wait to find out if I was having a baby boy or a baby girl, but plenty of parents prefer the surprise.
