The house isn’t just cool because of its proximity to the hippest restaurants, though; it’s also a historic landmark.

Name: Lara and Adam Location: South Austin, Texas Size: 930 square feet Years lived in: 6 months, owned Not counting the couches and chairs, nearly all the furniture in this home was built by its owners! Pallets, old fences…any reclaimed wood Lara and Adam found around their neighborhood became building material for their home’s contents. And they saved a lot of money by salvaging fencing they took down during the renovation and other wood scraps.

Name: Betsy, Manny and Tilly Location: Savannah, Georgia Size: 1680 square feet Years lived in: Owned 1 year Betsy and Manny are a duo who clearly enjoy a good renovation project. They moved to Savannah from Brooklyn, New York a little over a year ago after outgrowing the city—and their 400 square foot studio apartment.

Name: Arielle Goldman Location: Church Hill neighborhood — Richmond, Virginia Size: 1,500 square foot Years lived in: Owned 1 1/2 years Arielle and her husband live in this Richmond home, known as the “2nd Billups House.” The Billups family is among the oldest in the Church Hill neighborhood, dating from the 1860s. This house, in particular, was built by Charles Jackson Billups in 1900.

Name: Taylor and Alisha Murphy Location: Austin, Texas Size: 1,300 Square Feet Years lived in: 2 years, rented Taylor and Alisha Murphy have lived in Austin since they both graduated from the University of Texas. But Austin also boasts some diverse, singular design. Deep down in East Austin is where you’ll find Seattle native Emily Waldmann and her incredible modern-meets-bohemian style. This 1967 renovated charmer features welcoming common areas, ample outdoor space, and a private master bathroom ensuite.

Guests immediately fall in love with the artwork (her grandfather’s) and the mid-century bar stools. Emily, herself, is calm and inviting amidst the hustle and bustle of New York. She works for an architectural firm, called Sage and Coombe.

The apartment is a fourth floor walkup but that natural light is a worth payoff. In fact that natural light is so nice, she felt confident adding some dark, dramatic paint colors to her living room — and the space still feels bathed in light.
