But don’t we always say that it is what’s on the inside that counts? My husband Jean and I (along with our puppy, Arthur) were on the hunt for a home with character.

It came to Dana’s family through her father first; he bought the house in 1992 . (There was only one previous owner before their family.

Name: Adrienne Moran Location: West Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Size: 968 square feet Years lived in: Owned 2 years Adrienne’s sweet apartment is in an old biscuit/cookie warehouse in the inner suburb of West Melbourne, not far from the city. While many warehouse developments lose a sense of history when sliced up in the design process — this block of apartments thankfully retained the beautiful original wooden floors and beams.

Name: Dawn Tan and Darren Lee Location: Yarraville — Melbourne, Australia Size: 2647 square feet Years lived in: Rented 2.5 years Dawn Tan is a Melbourne-based artist and school teacher who draws inspiration in art from her love of food and travel. Darren is a mostly desk-bound policy wonk but also photographer who is very fascinated by his travels with Dawn.

Location: Inner North of Melbourne, Australia Size: 190 square meters internally Years lived in: Owned, almost 3 years Dan and Bianca bought their home almost three years ago when it was a completely different house. I used to live next door — so I have watched them tirelessly transform their home over the last two and a half years, with not one but then two small children in tow! Their perseverance deserves a serious round of applause.

Wye River is a small coastal town a scenic two and a half hour drive from Melbourne.

Name: Rose and Dan Location: Red Hill — Brisbane, Australia Size: 2368 square feet Years lived in: 12 years This gorgeous worker’s cottage in Brisbane’s inner suburbs is owned by ceramicist and collector, Rose, and her musician husband, Dan. Having lived in this house now for a cozy 12 years, their home is well-loved and decorated with a beautiful and organically grown collection of furniture and decor.

Name: Margaret Scholley Location: Bangalow, Australia Size: 1453 square feet Years lived in: Owned 7 years Margaret Scholley has been designing residential interiors for over 20 years in Australia, founding Alida & Miller Interior Design, an impressive firm that takes on design and styling projects around the world. In 2013, her daughter Kit (see her house tour!) joined her, and they’re now a mother daughter design duo focusing on interior styling and staging in the Byron Bay hinterland.

Name: Kit Alida Bettison with husband and kids Location: Bangalow, Australia Size: 2368 square feet Years lived in: Owned 3 years Inspired by expansive, light-filled industrial-style New York lofts and the free-wheeling bohemian vibes of the 1970s, this house in Australia is a maximalist’s dream. It’s the home of Kit Alida Bettison and her husband, who have lived in the home for three years, after building it four years ago.

Name: Vicki and Ross Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Years lived in: 8 years, owned Vicki and Ross moved into their home in the inner-city suburb of Carlton eight years ago. Their building was originally part of an adjoining hotel — and it housed a hand ball court sitting in the back. (The first Inter-colonial Hand Ball Competition was played there against New South Wales, in fact!) You can still see some of the original paint markings on the walls in their gorgeous courtyard.

Name: Jesse Roebuck and Alastair Emmett Location: Ipswich, Queensland Years Lived In: 1, owned Jesse and Alastair made the move from an inner-city Art Deco apartment to Ipswich when they purchased their first home. They found a beautiful “Queenslander” style cottage, and quickly made the house a home in just under a year. Choosing a house with character and charm was just the first step of this vintage luxe home.

Name: Paula-Jane Buckland, son Rocket (9 years old) and Dixon Location: Coburg North — Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Size: 3229 square feet Years lived in: 4 years, renting Paula-Jane and her son Rocket moved to Melbourne from Adelaide about four years ago.

Rented Aliça and Antony have only quite recently moved into their cute rental home in the northern suburb of Thornbury in Melbourne. Unfortunately for them, their stay is short lived; the house is due to be demolished and the land redeveloped at the end of the year.

Name: Jade Goulding of Style + Space Location: Auchenflower — Brisbane, Australia Size: Approximately 85m squared Years lived in: 2 years, renting Jade, an interior stylist and founder of Style + Space, lives in this inner city apartment with her husband and two young daughters. While the apartment only has two bedrooms, the living space has a great layout, allowing a lovely flow through the apartment. Windows on three sides of the apartment allow their place to get great natural light.

Name: Jenny Mountford, owner of Attic and Fable Location: Bridgetown, Western Australia Size: 1894 square feet Years lived in: 2.5 years, owned Jenny has always been drawn to color, the avant garde and items that have a history. To hold something in her hands that’s been held by many hands before her gives her such pleasure, allowing herself to wonder about the life both it, and its owner, may have led.

Name: Rachel Burke, her husband Thomas and their dachshunds, Daphne and Daisy Location: Brisbane, Australia Years lived in: 3 years, owned Rachel Burke has been on my radar since 2012 when she made a dress every day for a year. So it was certainly wonderful to step into her bright and colorful home that she shares with her kind husband Thomas and their two little dachshunds (who eventually warmed to me after a little coercing with some treats!).

Name: Jenny McCown Location: Brisbane, Australia Years lived in: 20 Months Some years ago I first met artist Jenny McCown when I photographed her home in East Brisbane — a five-bedroom Queenslander with a bright pink door. She has since moved into a more modern (and smaller) two-bedroom apartment on Brisbane River. It is in an enviable location, with a view off her balcony across Jacaranda trees with the river just beyond.

Name: Christopher Gyzemyter Location: Brisbane, Australia Size: 1345 square feet Years lived in: 5 years, owned Christopher — a talented interior designer — was destined to have a beautiful home, whatever space he ended up in. But what’s so lovely about this place is that it’s a reflection of his style, and also a reaction to the bones of the home he bought five years ago.

Name: Claire Plummer Location: Brunswick — Melbourne, Australia Size: 2,034 square feet Years lived in: 15 years, owned It might be surprising to learn that Claire Plummer — a telecommunications analyst by day, mosaic artist by night — is a self-confessed minimalist when it comes to decorating her home. But it’s precisely this conscious decision to keep it simple with furnishings that’s allowed the amazing, one-of-kind mosaic art she creates to shine.

Name: Katie Day, her partner and three adorable cats Location: Dayboro — Queensland, Australia Years lived in: 7 months, owned Katie has only recently moved into her cute Queenslander-style home in the country town of Dayboro, a 50-minute drive from Brisbane, Australia. The home was lovingly restored by a local building firm, and Katie’s added her “modern country” style to the space…along with filling the house with three cats and colorful sofas.

Name: Sara, Damien, Vincent (7) and Lawrence (5) Location: Bentleigh East — Melbourne, Australia Years lived in: 2 years, owned Sara and Damien purchased their home in Bentleigh East three years ago, and it’s been a great first family home for the couple and their two children. In fact, the process of renovating the house actually sparked Sara’s interest in interior design — so much so that after completing the reno she embarked on a “back to school” journey!

Name: Alex McCabe, her boyfriend Bobby, and their three dogs Freddy, Jimmy and Gerald Location: St Kilda — Melbourne, Australia Size: 1,345 square feet Years lived in: 8 years, owned About half of the furniture in Alex McCabe’s house is vintage. There’s a “deliciously worn” 1970s brown leather lotus couch, a 1950s Danish dining table set and some super comfortable vintage armchairs.

Name: Amelia Stockdale and Kayne Assan Location: Busselton, Western Australia Years lived in: 2 years, renting After returning from traveling and living all over Australia two years ago, Kayne and Amelia were lucky enough to be offered this beach shack to rent in Busselton through a friend. Busselton happens to be Kayne’s hometown, and at first this rental was supposed to be a temporary visit before their next adventure.

With their three boys, Zig (6), Fern (2) and Viv (4 months) Location: Point Lonsdale — Victoria, Australia Years Lived In: 3 years, but owned for 12 A few months ago we toured the vibrant Melbourne home of Alex McCabe, one of the co-founders of Australian modern bedding and home decor brand Kip&Co. Today, see inside fellow co-founder Kate Heppell’s home.

Name: Trish Martin (And Harriet the Greyhound) Location: Preston — Melbourne, Australia Size: 645 square feet Years Lived In: 1 and a half a years, owned Trish Martin started her vintage journey during her early days as a blogger eight years ago. In this time she opened an online store, two brick-and-mortar vintage shops in Melbourne, an online magazine called The Vintage Post, and eventually sold them all to become a digital marketing specialist.

They pulled up carpet, repaired the original floorboards, added a new plywood ceiling, and painted the shack inside and out.

Name: Angela Henley and her dog, Tex Location: Lauriston; Victoria, Australia Size: 30 square meters (323 square feet) Years lived in: 1 year; Owned Earlier this year, a friend posted a few photos of her friend’s home in Lauriston, which is a cute, wee town about 1.15 hours from Melbourne.

Name: Cluny Ferguson, husband Rowan, two teenage sons, and Ricky the dog! Location: Clifton Hill — Melbourne, Australia Years lived in: 10 years, owned Ten years ago when Cluny and her family first moved into their double-fronted weatherboard house in the Melbourne suburb of Clifton Hill, it looked a lot different. A lot.

Name: Natasha Webb, her husband Anthony, and their two sons Location: Canterbury — Melbourne, Australia Size: 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 1 study Years lived in: 3 years, owned You cannot help but smile and be happy in the colorful 1980s-era house of Natasha Webb and family. While so many other people would have knocked down and redeveloped this home, Natasha and her husband Anthony have embraced all of the brown brick and other ’80s features.

Name: Beci Orpin, Author, Crafter, Designer, Probable Cringer of this introduction, with her talented family Raph, Tyke & Ari Location: Brunswick West, Victoria, Australia Size: 1,290 square feet Years lived in: 7 years; Owned I felt instantly at home stepping into Beci & Raph’s home. Despite being a stranger, Beci left me alone in her front “ex-studio” while she popped down the street for milk.

Name: Camilla Molders Location: Middle Park; Melbourne, Australia Size: Small! A one-bedroom apartment Years lived in: 2 years; Rented Camilla‘s bright and colourful home in the gorgeous Melbourne suburb of Middle Park reminds me of the sun twinkling on the ocean on a bright Summer’s day.

Name: Dawn Lindsay Location: Bayside; Melbourne, Australia Size: 3 bedroom house (around 1300 square feet ) Years lived in: 17 yrs owned, with my husband. Dawn is a very talented lady of fabulous style and her home is a homage to an era she lives and breathes, be it as Dawn Lindsay, entrepreneur-around-town, or her alter-ego Dolores Daquiri, Queen of Burlesque! Dressed from her own vintage collection, Dawn welcomes me through the cherry red door and into her home.

Name: Robyn Rich, husband Jonathan, and daughter Abbey Location: Frankston, Australia Size: 145 square meters, (1,560 sqft) Years lived in: 11 Years I stumbled upon Robyn via her Facebook page one night when I was probably avoiding doing other things. I’d “liked” one of my artist friend’s newest pieces and old Zuckerberg and pals asked if perhaps I’d like Robyn’s work too? Well, I think I would, thankyouverymuch.

Name: Gemma and Duncan Patford-Legge Location: Brunswick; Melbourne, Australia Size: 2 bedroom Years lived in: 3 years; Owned After buying their apartment in the inner-city suburb of Brunswick three years ago, rope vessel artist Gemma Patford and graphic designer Duncan Legge were determined to turn it from drab, rundown, dated disaster to something light, airy, welcoming, and altogether more modern—with a touch of nostalgia.

Name: David and Ashe Pellew and their three children Location: West Coolup; Western Australia Size: 180 square meters (1,938 square feet) Years lived in: 14 Months; Owned One afternoon Ashe and David, along with their three children, drove past an old farm that was for sale in a tiny town in the south of Western Australia. At that moment, they fell in love with its charms and promptly bought it the next day, thus fulfilling a dream that they had had together since they were only 17 years old.

Name: Joanne O’Callaghan Location: Melbourne, Australia Size: 510 square feet Years owned: 16 years Joanne recently renovated this late-1940s Art Deco apartment in East Melbourne, Australia. The entire place is full of light and charm, but the apartment’s living and dining space, called the “blue room,” is a particular jewel: It features Art Deco cornices, a tiered mirror above the original fireplace and a large framed window.

Name: Christina Lowry and family Location: Brisbane, Australia Years lived in: Owned for 4 years Christina is a jewelry maker living on the Southside of Brisbane, Australia. When looking to buy a home four years ago, the requirement was that she have space to have her workshop at home. As a result, she lives in a ’70s-built home with her husband and three children, in a quiet and leafy suburb. What is lovely about Christina’s home is that it doesn’t adhere to one style.

Name: Chloe Gard and Joel Dwine Location: Brisbane, Australia Size: A cottage and backyard studio Years Lived In: Renting for 1.5 years Chloe and Joel’s home looks like a simple old timber cottage just on the Southside of Brisbane city. But if you take a look inside, you will find a quirky and nontraditional extension done by an architect, complete with a built-in attic-bedroom, corrugated iron walls and old French doors as windows.

Name: Michaela-Sophie Chin and Nicholas Sangster Location: Brisbane, Australia Years Lived In: Renting 2.5 years Michaela and Nick both work in the creative industries, which is obvious to any guest who enters their imaginative home. They furnished the space with secondhand finds that complement the house’s unique features and reflect their artistic interests. One doesn’t often get to design a part of their rental home—but in this case Michaela did!

Name: Louise, husband Brett and three kids Location: Camp Mountain, Australia Size: Approx 4413sqft Years Lived In: 3 years, owned Louise and her family have the best of both worlds: a lovely old home on a large block with gumtrees and only a 30-minute drive to the city. The old house suits Louise’s style perfectly, as her home is full of furniture from her grandparents, and finds from antique shops, thrift stores and local makers.

Name: Franz and Patsy Knapp with kids Felix (6) and Betty (4) and dog Ludo Location: Dunsborough, Western Australia Size: 1,615 square feet Years lived in: 6 years, owned Franz, a stonemason, and Patsy live in a home they built together from the ground up. Their beautiful home is located on seven and a half acres in the coastal town of Dunsborough, well-known for its white sandy beaches and holiday atmosphere.

Inside this house, behind its stained glass front door, is the cozy and inviting home of Michelle Grayson, one half of the genius behind Sprout Gallery.

Name: Breeana (Bree) Dunbar and son Ari Location: Brunswick East — Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Size: 540 square feet Years lived in: 2 months, renting I moved into this apartment after my son’s father and I separated earlier this year. I found the separation absolutely devastating; it feels like a death and in a way it is. It’s the death of your life as you know it, and the death of the future you imagined for your family.

Name: Abeer and Aetesam, with their two sons, Hamza and Azaan Location: Donvale — Melbourne, Victoria Size: 1,600 square feet Years Lived In: 1 year, renting Having moved from Pakistan to Saudi Arabia and most recently Melbourne, this is a family on the go. Abeer, a photographer/blogger and her engineer husband, Aetesam, started renting this bungalow in the suburbs of Melbourne a year ago, and have lovingly turned it into a home for them and their two little boys since.

Name: Helen Bayley and husband Chris Bayley. Daughters Charlotte (9), Annabelle (7), and Imogen (6). Location: Queensland, Australia Years lived in: 11 years, owned Helen Bayley knows how to create happiness with color. In 2013 she launched Lovestar, a company that vibrantly re-imagines the old-fashioned ceramic wall vase out of modern materials like Lucite. Helen and her husband handcraft their products in their studio in Brisbane, and the vases have been a huge hit since day one.

Name: Andrea Crickmore Location: Byford, Western Australia Size: 200 square meters (2,153 square feet) Years lived in: 3 years; Owned I didn’t even have to get to the door of Andrea’s home to know that it was going to be something completely different from any other home I have photographed before.

The couple originally met at art school in the ’90s and then both worked in the music industry in Melbourne.

Name: Renee Mouritz and Adrian Testa and their dog, Sammy Location: Yallingup, Western Australia Size: 128 square meters (1,378 square feet) Years lived in: 10 years; Owned Renee, a passionate Australian conservationist, and Adrian, a chiropractor from New York, built themselves a home near the coast of Western Australia to serve as a retreat from the busy-ness of the rest of the world.

Their new location has afforded them a great family home filled with the treasures they’ve collected over their years together.

Name: Jen Clark and Kirstie Innes-Will, George and Bob the dogs, and Ruby the cat Location: Preston; Victoria, Australia Size: 200 square meters (2,153 square feet) Years lived in: 2.5 years; Rented When I first entered the home of graphic designer Jen and her partner, Kirstie, a senior editor at Black Inc. Books, I was greeted by their two dogs: the photogenic and well-behaved greyhound, George, and a small, white terrier called Bob.

Name: Neryl Walker and Tim Haynes and daughter, Ivy Lee Location: Balaclava; Victoria, Australia Size: 1,000 square feet Years lived in: 10 years; Owned Neryl and Tim’s 1950s house is the perfect backdrop for their various collections of vintage nostalgia, magazines, packaging, furniture, flea market finds, and artwork created either by the couple or their friends. They have kept many of the original 1950s features plus some of those added in the 1970s.

Name: Luke and Sophie Doyle and their dog, Chester Location: Melville, Western Australia Size: 450 square meters (4,843 square feet) Years lived in: 3 years; Owned Sophie is a marketing adviser for an agricultural company by day, but it is her role as Creative Director for her business, Design Horde, that is her true passion.

Name: Ben and Heidi Yardley and their cat, Nico Location: North Melbourne; Victoria, Australia Size: 2500 square feet Years lived in: 5 years; Rented Heidi and Ben’s home is located down a quaint cobblestone lane that’s slightly overgrown with trees and shrubs. As you enter through the gate, it’s like stepping back in time or traveling to Europe.

Name: Tony and Sarah Howell and their sons, Oliver and Reeve Location: Gracetown, Western Australia Size: 320 square meters (3,444 square feet) Years lived in: 16; Owned Between the dense natural bush and one of the main surfing breaks in South Western Australia lies a home full of peace and serenity. Sarah, who owns a home decor business sourcing treasures from around the world, and Tony, regarded as one of Australia’s best chefs, have built a home that is as beautiful as it is inviting.

Designed by a Swiss architect and built by a Polish migrant in the ’90s, it is full of quirky features—all of which Julie has embraced with her beautiful knack for mixing antiques and roadside junk finds with modern, handmade pieces. The result is a home brimming with soul and personality.

The location was enviable, boasting both a nearby river and views of the city, and they knew with some careful planning, they could turn the small, dark house into the light, bright family home that it is today.

Name: Emma and Cody and their dog, Chuck Location: Herne Hill — Geelong, Australia Size: Three-bedroom house Years lived in: 2.5 years; Owned As soon as Emma and Cody bought their home in Geelong, they immediately painted the walls white, and tore down the wall between the kitchen and living space, opening it right up. What they were left with was a perfect blank canvas.

Set in a leafy suburb just 3 kilometers (1.86 miles) from the Perth central business district, it has a beautiful natural warmth about it.

Name: Phil and Ruth de Vos and their six children Location: Mount Richon, Western Australia Size: 340 square meters (3,660 square feet) Years lived in: 3 1/2 years; Owned Ruth, a textile artist, and Phil, an engineer, built their home with two things in mind: It had to be as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible, and there had to be plenty of room for the entire family.

I had fairly high expectations of her at-home style, and it seriously did not disappoint.
