Before & After: Guest Room Turned Big Boy RoomProjects & Improvements
I love Before and Afters that feature something hideous or lackluster transformed into something beautiful and creative. This is not that kind of Before and After. This is a perfectly nice guest room completely overhauled to become a “big boy” room for a 2-year-old.Amanda wrote to share this house project with us. The carpeting stayed, but that is about the only thing that didn’t change, including the paint on the walls.

The “Blank to Brilliant Navy Blue” Baby Room MakeoverProjects & Improvements
Project by: Taylor Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Just days before my scheduled c-section, we were finally finishing our daughter’s nursery. We wanted a room with lots of contrast, personality and DIY touches. What happens when you take over your sister’s bedroom? You scramble to rid the space of everything pink and girly. Even after a great deal of elbow grease had already gone into this space to rid it of girl cooties, Max’s room still needed a little punch of hip and cool to better represent the grownup teenager he’s become. Want to see what it looks like now?

One rainy weekend Lora Neveu decided to build a charming little dream escape in a window nook in her daughter’s room that had remained empty and unused. Follow me after the jump to see what she came up with. Two days and $165 later, Lora had created a wonderful and cozy space that doubles as a play/nap and storage area. She built a simple box and divider out of plywood and brackets, painted, added cushions, lanterns, and drapes, and then she was done.

Rachel of VanHook & Co. is sharing a project that features paint in an unexpected way: refinishing a worn out wooden floor in her kids’ room.A painted floor may not be a DIY for the faint of heart, but the floor in Rachel’s kids’ room turned out beautifully. After experimenting with paint on their hallway floors, Rachel and her husband decided to apply a distressed version to their children’s room.

Before & After: Sketchy Bedroom to Bright Clean NurseryProjects & Improvements
When Jane and her husband bought their new house, they were less than thrilled with the outdated and sad bedroom that would be their son’s nursery. The wallpaper was old, the walls were in bad shape and, to cap it off, there was a very, very skeevy bed that lived in there. Eight months pregnant, Jane got to the tedious work of stripping the wallpaper, repairing walls and then building the room back up from scratch.Today, the nursery is a far cry from its humble beginnings.

Before & After: Boy’s Bedroom RedoProjects & Improvements
Michele’s son had outgrown his room’s decor, and everyone was sick of the orange, purple and red color scheme. It took a couple of weeks to re-do it completely, using a lot of what they already owned, plus adding a few new things to the mix. The goal was to keep it affordable and simple. This room might win the award for the most handmade things in one space.

Before & After: Guest Bedroom to Beautiful NurseryProjects & Improvements
When expecting her first child, Susannah did what many folks do in preparation: convert the extra guest room to a nursery. She clearly enjoyed the process, gathering everything she’d need for her first born from sources from Target to Etsy to Craigslist. You want to see how it turned out? You know what to do…Susannah did a great job mixing fun and colorful patterns. The spot above the changing table is ready and waiting for a photo of her soon-to-be-born baby boy.

Before & After: Little Boy’s Room Gets a Creative New LookProjects & Improvements
I love it when kids’ rooms look like, well… a room fit for a kid! This is a great example of a clean, organized, yet creative space for a little one to flourish.Kara Rosenlund designed this room to be a cheerful, relaxed space perfect for a growing little boy. From the dramatic floor-to-ceiling chalkboard walls, to the sunny ceiling fan, to the “grass” rug on the floor, there’s no risk of mistaking this room for a serious grownup space.

Before & After: Baby E’s NurseryProjects & Improvements
When Brooke and Luke found out they were expecting a baby boy, they decided to turn their office into a nursery. The problem was, it felt like more of a “man room” than a little guy’s nursery with its dark, knotty pine walls. So Brooke and Luke decided to roll up their sleeves and work a little magic with primer and paint. It was a lot of work, but the end result is stunning:For more photos and details, check out Brooke’s blog, Life in Bridgetown. Thanks, Brooke!

Some parents worry that their baby’s closet is too small, but what if all you have for a nursery IS a closet? Kari has been inspired by all the small nurseries we’ve shown in the past and wanted to share her own small space baby project: her closet turned nursery.  Kari writes: We are about to have a daughter and wanted to stay in our one-bedroom apartment, so we converted our walk-in closet into a nursery. Before & After: Outgrown Nursery to Nautical Big Boy RoomProjects & Improvements
We often extol the virtues of creating a nursery that will grow with your child and we still believe that. But if you find design and decorating fun, maybe you are looking forward to updating the nursery to a “big kid” room. Reader Laura felt it was time to go from “the land of the dinosaurs” to “swimming with the fishes” in her son’s new, nautical bedroom.

Before & After: Office to Out-of-this-World Kid’s RoomProjects & Improvements
8-year-old Jake had been sharing a room with his older brother until the family decided it was time for each of the boys to have their own space. Their home had a small office that might serve for a third bedroom… after a few little adjustments. Okay, maybe a few big adjustments. Jake’s parents wanted a place where he could sleep, play, study, and host sleepovers — you know, kid things — but the room’s small footprint made this a bit of a challenge.

Before & After: Gemma’s New NurseryProjects & Improvements
Gemma and her husband have a baby on the way and, while they didn’t get pregnant just so they could design the nursery, for them, it was a welcome bonus. When they moved into their bungalow, the room was, as Gemma called it, “a hot turquoise mess.” With $600 to spend, they were able to fill the room with nursery essentials: a crib, dresser/changing table (they scored a used one and fixed it up) and a new rug.

Before & After: A Baby Room Grows UpProjects & Improvements
Erin of DIY on the Cheap needed a new sleeping solution for her two boys – her youngest was sleeping in the nursery, while her older son was in the guest bedroom. She decided to create a shared “big boy room” for both and hit it out of the ballpark! Before & After: Lucy’s White to Wow! BedroomProjects & Improvements
Dana of MADE wanted to spice up her daughter Lucy’s boring bedroom. Living in the suburbs in a “cookie cutter” home, the space was seriously lacking in character and personality. With paint, accessories, and a lot of creativity, this room went from white to wow! I love that Dana didn’t make any big purchases (furniture, an area rug, or curtains) to totally transform the space. The biggest changes were a very creative coat of paint and a few fun DIY projects.

Before & After: Gnarly to Nautical Boy’s BedroomProjects & Improvements
Here’s how Hung describes the room his 5-year-old son Adrian inherited when they bought this house: “purple 70s shag plush carpeting and lime green grey walls”. Not exactly a child’s dream room. The family decided to turn Adrian’s room into a not-too-themey nautical room.. Great job! The textile hanging and lights are particularly dramatic and memorable. They’re a smart way to add a strong visual that is affordable and that even renters could do.

Before & After: Small City Bedroom To Custom Lofted Bed & DeskProjects & Improvements
In small rooms it just makes sense to “go up” and optimize your vertical space. Faced with the challenge of making better use of a tiny bedroom (7′ x 12′) in Manhattan, architect Benjamin Marcus conceived a lofted bed structure with stairs and desk and storage below. Benjamin tells us more about this project: The room has two points of entry on opposite long walls, making it a very tight space.

Before & After: A Shared Parisian Bedroom Gets a Sophisticated MakeoverProjects & Improvements
Two sisters in Paris used to share this space and it is a pretty cute “before” space. The little house bed was a DIY project and the prevalence of pink was offset by the white walls and sunlight. With the youngest sister out of a crib, it was time to redesign and, just their luck, their aunt is super style savvy and loves to take on decorating projects. With paint, wallpaper and several re-imagined thrift store purchases, she turned their new room into a soft, elegant haven.

Before & After: “Nautical or Nothing” Boy’s RoomProjects & Improvements
Maggie and her family relocated to Heilsbronn, Germany and began decorating and renovating (lots of DIY!) their new home. Her son’s bedroom was livable but had no life. A subtle, but warm paint job and the addition of nautical-inspired accessories later and her son has a room that reflects his interests and personality. Maggie tells us more: My son is absolutely obsessed with all things Titanic so for his room it was a no brain-er, nautical or nothing.

Before & After: From Boring Office Desk to Industrial Chic Changing TableProjects & Improvements
When Maude Lefrancois found out she was pregnant, she decided to change her home office into the nursery — and her desk was the perfect height for a changing table. With a few nuts and bolts, a shelf, and vintage wood crates, she turned her sterile office desk into a warmer industrial changing station with more than enough storage. Maude drilled holes into the metal frame and attached four angled brackets with nuts and bolts.

Before & After: Finn’s Bright and Airy Nursery TransformationProjects & Improvements
With baby Finn on the way, mom Kelli of Purple Tree Photography wanted to transform the family’s unused third bedroom into a nursery for their new addition. After many coats of paint and a lot of hard work, the space has been transformed into a bright and airy oasis for their beautiful baby boy. I think my favorite part is the pop of color in the small nook above the crib – it went from being the biggest eyesore of the space to its greatest asset.

Kim wanted to update her son Carter’s nursery into a big boy room. They never used the room except for sleeping, and it was stuffed with forgotten gifts and baby gear. Kim knew she wanted the new space to be light and airy and to reflect Carter’s personality and interests, so she painted the walls a bright white, added a splash of Carter’s favorite color on the ceiling, and added fresh accessories: What a stunning transformation! Thank you Kim!

Before & After: Budget IKEA Sniglar Crib Goes Pretty in PinkProjects & Improvements
The Sniglar crib mostly owes its popularity to its $69.99 price tag, but it works for so many families because the plain and simple design is versatile enough for any style of room. If you think the Sniglar is perhaps too plain and simple, check out how the folks at bedding company Little Auggie customized one with paint… Painting the spindles of the crib completely ups the style factor and gives the crib a fresh, modern feel.

Before & After: Pepto Pink to Serene Seaside Boy’s BedroomProjects & Improvements
Danielle’s son Conor was distressed by the pink walls in his new bedroom. In fact, they made him cry. A fresh paint job and several DIY projects later, his new beachy boy’s room was making a splash. Danielle: The day after we moved into our home, Conor came down the stairs crying. Absolutely sobbing and we begged him to tell us what was wrong. Did he have a nightmare? Was he scared sleeping in a new house? No, it was none of that. He was upset that he woke up in a pink room….

Before & After: Wood Paneled Office Turned Bright, Fresh NurseryProjects & Improvements
Kelly and her husband bought their first home in Spanish Town, Baton Rouge and it had a lot of…character. They’ve been sprucing it up ever since and their recent project was to transform this office space into a room to welcome their new baby. Two big challenges: decorating for either a boy or a girl and making this dark, claustrophobic space into a happy, bright room for their child.

Before & After: A Pulled Together Kids’ RoomProjects & Improvements
This is not an “OMG! You lost 100 lbs.!” kind of makeover. This is more like,”Hmmnn…did you change your hair? get new glasses?” But therein lies the beauty: small changes are sometimes all that’s needed to make a room feel pulled together. The bedroom above belongs to Noah and his little sister Everly and here it is after a few simple changes: So, what changed? The blue paint is gone, there’s a new bedside table, new artwork and a new, cozy rug.

Before & After: Plain Jane IKEA Bunk Bed To Indoor Kids CabinProjects & Improvements
IKEA’s KURA loft bed usually steals the spotlight in terms of hacks and makeovers, but this transformation of the plain Jane MYDAL into a playhouse for an 8-year-old girl shows just how much potential this higher bunk has. With some plywood, 512 screws and some fabric, this bunk became a tented sleeping area (reached by TROFAST “stairs”), a reading nook with a hammock and a mini desk. Not to mention the adorable flower boxes and bucket on a pulley!

Before & After: Dingy Closet Turned Happy Play SpaceProjects & Improvements
When Sarita and her husband bought an old home that needed a lot of work, they cooked up a plan to keep their two young daughters occupied and not underfoot while they spruced it up. Their mission: transform this unappealing closet into a happy play space. Sarita describes the project: This tiny closet is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. I work as a muralist for children’s spaces and love colour! I was anxious to play with bold and bright yellows.

Before & After: A First-Time Upholsterer Tackles a RockerProjects & Improvements
Dania was on the hunt for a rocker to go with the fresh blue and cream nursery she was planning for her new son. This old green vinyl rocker from her in-laws worked just fine…but wasn’t quite the look she was going for. And though she had never upholstered anything before, she tackled this task, and the result is impressive! From Dawn: The original chair came from her in-laws, and while it was in great functioning shape, the green vinyl upholstery wasn’t in the best shape.

Before & After: Drab Student Space to a Cottage-Inspired Boy’s BunkProjects & Improvements
When Emma’s family purchased this aging row house in Kingston, Ontario each of the three floors was a separate apartment. This room was occupied by a student and was filled with cheap furniture and textbooks. It needed a lot of love to match the vision she had for her 5-year-old son Angus’s space.

Before & After: Blank Slate to Modern, Gender-Neutral NurseryProjects & Improvements
Project by: Allison Harlow of Curio Design Studio Project type: e-design Location: Miami, Florida This space provided lots of challenges! It was long and narrow, did not have a natural focal point and the budget needed to remain around $1000. To make things more complicated the client wanted to keep the gender of their baby a surprise and create a nursery that was modern, gender neutral, mature and utilized mostly neutral colors.

Before & After: Plain Jane Changing Table Gets a Quick, Easy UpgradeProjects & Improvements
Changing tables aren’t usually very memorable which is why we like this simple idea for customizing and adding color to one. This nursery DIY is quick, non-permanent and only requires a pair of scissors and some yarn. The folks at bedding company Little Auggie gussied up this IKEA Gulliver changing table with four colors of yarn which they wrapped around the side dowels. You can create any pattern you fancy – perhaps an ombre or just one single color you love.

Before & After: Plain Dresser Gets a Heroic MakeoverProjects & Improvements
Amanda’s boys had defaced this plain Jane dresser, so she decided to give it a heroic update with some super fabric: From Amanda: After years of carrying around these boring dressers that my children had graffitied, I figured it was time for a new look. A random stop into Walmart yielded the motivation I needed: 2 yards of Marvel comic book hero fabric. A little mod podge and some bright color paint was all I needed to make the magic complete.

Before & After: A Small, Narrow Bedroom Gets Everything It NeedsProjects & Improvements
Small bedrooms are always a challenge but a very narrow room has particular design obstacles to overcome. This bedroom, a former maid’s room in a pre-war building, is only 5’7″ wide – less than the length of a typical twin bed. The solution? A lofted space for sleeping leaving ample room for a workspace and storage for the young occupant. Casa Kids in Brooklyn took on this project with designer Roberto Gil at the helm.

Amy’s 3-year-old was ready for a big kid room inspired by the high seas. This thrift store dresser could’ve walked the plank, but a nautical makeover turned it into a hidden treasure. I sketched the ship graphic onto the front and painted it in with Annie Sloan’s “Coco”, then did a wash over the entire dresser with Coco.

With a baby on the way, Anna and her husband had to decide how they were going to fit a little person in their San Francisco one bedroom. The walk-in closet held the solution. There’s a Secret Room Hiding Behind This Wardrobe
When I saw the title of this reader submission, I braced myself for some The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe action, but it turned out to be less Narnia, more Lane Kim. This Bathroom Went from Boring Builder Grade to “Wow”
While there isn’t anything inherently wrong with this “before” (it’s clean, it’s white, it’s rocking some fun cabinet hardware and additional storage), we’re saying it: it’s boring. This bathroom could be in just about any house in any part of America. The “after” though…well, we’re smitten (it features one of the most stunning floors seen in all our Before & Afters).

Scuffed mauve toilet, periwinkle walls, mauve sink, pebbled glass shower door, yellowed shower stall—what’s not to love? Well, perhaps a few tiny updates might be in order here… Ahhhh, much better! I know there are those of you who dislike white-centric makeovers (I always love them), but in this case, the interplay between the mostly white walls and the mostly black floor is so fun and vibrant, and the room really pops.

Before & After: 3 Years, $1,000 and Many Craigslist Finds Later, This Bathroom Has a New Look
Becky’s bathroom was not only super dated, it wasn’t really meeting their needs, so she set about changing it, slowly but surely. Aside from some plumbing work, Becky tackled most of the updates herself, keeping the cost low (but, occasionally, the stress high). The new bathroom is a moody, glam goth space, the likes of which we haven’t really seen on the site before. Instead of working with contractors, she enlisted her boyfriend and father and the three of them remodeled this bathroom from head to toe.

Before & After: A Stylish Bathroom Transformation
This is Mattie’s old bathroom, pre Style Cure. Even though she was a little off of the usual Cure schedule, due to some conflicts with work and potty training, it doesn’t make her results any less impressive. The best part? The budget for her entire bathroom redo was a low low $49. After: what a difference a little paint makes! The blue walls, with a pattern of little birds and clouds, lend just the right amount of color and whimsy to this previously drab bathroom.
