Are Your Neighbors Locking Their Doors? This Survey Tells All
Growing up in a city, everyone I knew locked their door. Granted, we all hid keys in easy to find places like the doormat right in front of the locked door, but we locked them nevertheless. Turns out, not every region of the country locks their doors equally. A new survey from Safehome.org looks at the door locking habits of folks across the country. While they have a reputation for being easy-going and welcoming, turns out Southerners draw the line at letting you just waltz on into their homes.

What Can You Take From a Hotel Room? Leave the Towels, Take the Conditioner
Growing up, my dad was a firm believer of that if you were paying for a hotel room, you were entitled to take a few towels for the road. Turns out, dad laws aren’t real laws and stealing towels from a hotel room is not only frowned upon, it is technically illegal. So what is fair game? Hotels actually want you to take toiletries—they’re not going to re-use them and it’s a good way to spread the brand around. Everything else, though, is strictly off limits.

Sabina’s “Dated, Depressing” Kitchen Gets a Bright Makeover
Project by: Sabina Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania We moved into our house three years ago and it was love at first sight. We loved everything about it—except the fact that it was incredibly outdated. So, after putting up with our dated, depressing kitchen for three years, in June of 2015 we finally started our dream kitchen renovation. We had replaced a few of the appliances with our own when we moved in, so we didn’t opt to get all new appliances during this renovation.

A Mid Century Inspired Makeover for $1500
Project by: Kaycee Location: College Park — Orlando, Florida An old colleague and friend of mine recently moved into some new office space for his growing creative agency, and reached out to me to help decorate the waiting room. The rooms had already been painted, and I was given free range to do as I like. I didn’t have a strict deadline, but completed the room within about 3 months from start to finish (installation happened over a weekend).

Area Man Builds Daughter Incredible Tree Bedroom, Strong Contender for World’s #1 Dad
Name: Lia ( 6 years old) Location: Bellevue, Washington My daughter wanted a fairy tree in her room that she could sit inside and read books, climb the branches, and also have a top sitting area. I’m a professional video game artist and make virtual worlds for a living, so while I thought I could come up with the aesthetic idea, I was kind of un-prepared for the physical realities of this project. I used Disney set-design as my inspiration.

Name: E. Price (4) Location: Hollywood, California Ever since I brought home a “Yellow Submarine” storybook my son has been OBSESSED!! From going to Amoeba and buying every book, mug and record; to watching the movie 5 times a day; to listening to him sing along to “Sgt. A Red, White & Blue Boys Room
Name: Cayden and Kyle (6 and 11 months) Location: Providence, Rhode Island We started this room years ago in this theme — there’s something about the classic red, white and blue that just says little boys to me, I love it! Although it’s a small space, it carries a big punch with a mix of fun patterns to differentiate this room from the rest of our neutral home. Overall, I had really hoped to create a fun and cozy space for my two boys to share.

Paige’s Dreamy Victorian-Boho Bedroom
Name: Paige (10) Location: Dallas, Texas This makeover was inspired by my colorful daughter. The jumping off point for the entire room was bright ikat fabric that was used for the custom drapes and my daughter’s desire for a canopy bed. The look is what I like to call Victorian-Boho. I selected a subdued color for the wall so the room would age with her as she grows into a teenager.

Max’s “Mix and Modern”Room
Name: Max ( 6) Location: Crystal Lake, Illinois I call Max’s new room Mix n’ Modern because although it is quite modern, I love to mix that up with a little vintage, a little handmade, and a little quirky. I want both of us to love it, and think I achieved that with this recent upgrade. I gave him our old Malm bed, but painted it. I made him an enormous chalkboard since he loves art.

A Mixed-Use Space for Mom & Baby “Where Creativity Thrives”
Name: Pie (10 months) Location: South Park — Charlotte, North Carolina Our juxtaposition of a room happens to be the most valuable square footage in our home: the playroom/office combo. It seems nonsensical, but for us, it’s perfect. Pie’s playroom is where we spend the biggest chunk of our days. I am a blogger, so I “work” from home. In reality blogging is more fun than work—my blog is a place where I go to feel creative and inspired.

Name: G and J ( 4 & 2) Location: Toronto, Canada After living in our home for the last two years, we’ve slowly started renovating each space to suit our needs. For our two boys, however, I couldn’t figure out what to do with their space. So it remained with builder grade paint and a few train posters on the wall. Especially in a city where rents are skyrocketing – you’re lucky to get a window no less a backyard and a garage.

Before & After: A Silicon Valley Kitchen Gets a Contemporary Makeover
We purchased our townhouse about 4 years ago. We wanted to purchase a home that needed a kitchen remodel because we didn’t like what we saw when we toured houses with remodeled kitchens. Also, we wanted to get used to our place before we embarked on a remodel so we knew what we wanted as far as layout, finishes, and appliances. We were glad we waited because we made many decisions that were different from our initial thoughts on what we wanted.
