When it comes to color, I’m a middle of the road person. While I admire people who go for the gusto with four walls of bright, bold color, I’m more in tune with moderated uses. Accent walls deliver a robust dose of color with less work, more flexibility and require slightly less color confidence. In other words, they’re perfect for lazy, timid, commitment phobes like me.

These seven combinations are fresh and will make you want to revamp your room ASAP.

The bathroom I share with my husband smells constantly like old urine. He says that it’s because he’s tall, and his pee therefore hits the water in the bowl with enough velocity that some must splash out and escape his notice (especially during middle-of-the-night bathroom trips). You’ve seen them, I know you have. The sad, mirrored walls, or maybe sliding closet doors, the ones that were intended to be signs of disco-era extravagance but that can now read a a little sad and tawdry. They’re all over a certain kind of ’70s and ’80s condo. I always thought that mirrored walls were just plain bad. The Wall Street Journal recently published a story with a simple yet shocking premise: “To make their home interiors look better on Instagram and amass more followers, millennials and social-media mavens are painting their walls white.” What do you think of that? What do we think of that?

White walls seem to be a designer secret weapon: they open up rooms of all sizes (make small rooms seem larger, large rooms appear…even airier) and look incredibly crisp and cool; plus, it’s easy to match your room’s decor to the snowy hue (because, well, white goes with everything). You know what other color is just as easy to work with (even if you might not think so at first glance)? Hint: It’s the complete opposite of white.

Color lovers who area also renters (and can’t paint your walls), rejoice! You CAN have a colorful home even if wall paint is against the rules. Interior designer Rachelle Padgett didn’t let the no-wall-color constraints of her small rental apartment get her down. Instead, she got creative. White is arguably the most versatile of paint colors, especially when it comes to that which surrounds us—walls. Would you agree? When translated from the Latin, “terra cotta” literally means “baked earth.
