Before & After: Just Try & Top This Card Catalog
Vintage card catalogs are just one of those items you have to grab if you see them for a reasonable price. Beth snagged a pair that stacked, so she decided to give the lower one a top so it could be used separately. From Beth: These card catalogs are like the holy grail of vintage finds! If you can find them, the prices are usually enormous. I lucked out and found two of these for a pretty good price. They were identical pieces with one sitting on top of the other.

Before & After: A Plain Chair Slips Into Something More Polished
Jill snagged this basic chair for a buck, and decided it could use some style. Instead of reupholstering, however, she made it a custom slipcover instead: From Jill: Comfy and functional but nondescript in style, this chair was the perfect piece for a makeover project. I picked the chair up at an auction for $1, my hubby fixed the one spring that had ‘sprung’ and I used it as my sewing chair for a few months.

Up Your Color Game: 7 Reasons to Paint Things the Same Color as the Walls
My friend’s newly purchased apartment includes a short interior staircase and I suggested she paint the stair rails the same color as the (blue) wall behind them. Will she do it? Maryann’s Creative Craftsman Bungalow in Bellevue
Name: Maryann Location: Bellevue neighborhood of Richmond Virginia We purchased a 1926 Craftsman Bungalow – a 1 ½ story home that had not been renovated or updated in any substantial way. Before & After: Trashed TV Cart Finds New Purpose
Kathy saved this little cart from the trash, and decided to give it a new job, and a new (removable!) top! From Kathy: This vintage TV stand was on its way to the garbage when I rescued it. I was inspired by the printed side of a coffee bean burlap bag to create a coffee cart ideal for a small apartment or office. A little spray paint can go a long way.

Molly’s 520 Square Foot Soothing Manhattan Studio
Name: Molly Torres Location: New York, New York (Midtown) Before I started school, my boyfriend and I found the perfect (and affordable) 520 square foot studio apartment in midtown last summer — centrally located to school, for me, and work, for him. Though I only had a minimal budget to work off of, I was extremely excited for the decorating challenge. Within the small space, I wanted to create a functional entryway and a “separate” living area, dining area and bedroom area.

Tamar’s Smart, Stylish Studio Apartment
Name: Tamar Levine Location: Chelsea, New York City Size: 270 square feet Years lived in: 4 While Tamar’s address has stayed the same, the decor has changed a few times. Before & After: A Manhattan Bath Gets a Fresh New Look
When planning their kitchen overhaul, Manhattan homeowners Pallavi and Keyur had originally decided to leave their bathroom — which was original to the house and a little the worse for wear — as it was. But as the project progressed, they realized it was important to them that the style of their bathroom match up to the updated look they were pursuing in the rest of the apartment, and that by leaving all the fixture footprints in place, they could save money on the remodel.

Hannah & Kristie’s Cozy Living Room
Name: Hannah Wareham Location: Northampton, Massachusetts After four years of living in our current duplex apartment, my wife Kristie and I finally got our living room decor right for us. It’s a mixture of vintage finds (like using an old magazine rack to store yarn for ongoing knitting projects) and newer bargains (thanks Craigslist!). Our living room is the first thing you see when you enter our home, and because of that, it was tough to make storage options both easy and stylish.

8 Tips for Moving with Kids
After years of talking about it, we’re finally diving headfirst into the process of moving. Although we love our little house, our family has outgrown it, and we’d all like some room to breathe. My first task was to pack up some of the clutter that we’ve accumulated over the years to get the house ready for potential buyers. As I filled the first box, my ever curious four-year-old asked, “What are you doing, Mommy?

Tracey & Ruben’s Global Chic in Atlanta

Our apartment is pretty basic in terms of architecture, but we’ve done our best to make it our own and to make it feel like a home. My husband and I chose this apartment because of the square footage and the fact that it really didn’t feel like an apartment when we first saw it. It really felt more like a home. Our favorite room is the sunroom.

Before & After: Dresser Gets Some Perked-Up Pattern
Reeves wanted to add a touch of visual interest to this vintage dresser that needed a little love. She’s also got a great tip for painting on wood that will prevent color bleeding: From Reeves: I picked up this Dixie dresser from a local furniture sale. While I loved the mid century look and style of the piece, the finish needed some work and I felt that the piece needed a bit of color and a geometric design to add some visual interest.

Before & After: A Closet Makeover with Lofty Results

Before & After: From Grimy Garage to Glamping Bedroom
When roommates outnumbered bedrooms, Brooke opted to take the garage. Now that she cleaned it, cleared it, and spruced it up, we bet the others are super jealous of her fab “glamping” space. From Brooke: I moved in to a three bedroom house with four roommates, and I opted to take the garage as my bedroom. I saw potential in the structure, regardless of its state. And I have always wanted to live in a barn… this is what it reminded me of.

Logan’s Sunny Small Studio in Los Feliz

Before & After: How I Restored Don Draper’s Patio Set
I own Don Draper’s patio set! I didn’t know it at first. It was just a rusty little table and chairs at the Nashville Flea Market. One of the chairs was missing some scrolls and the top was gone, but I fell in love. $100 later I was loading it into my neighbor’s truck. Lucky for me, there’s a powder coater near the flea market and I brought it straight to him. He had another company recreate the missing scrolls and weld them in place.

Eric’s Fantastically Fashion Forward Apartment in a Former Convent
Name: Eric Location: Baltimore I recently relocated to Baltimore for a position at Under Armour. Baltimore is fantastic about honoring its history (homes in former cigar factories, for instance), and I happened to find a former convent that has been converted into apartments. Each of the ten apartments in the building is unique, but I happen to think mine is the most spectacular: high tin ceilings and white painted floors (due to a previous contractor’s mistake).

Before & After: Big Changes for a Little Kitchen
When Pallavi and Keyur bought their one-bedroom Murray Hill co-op, it had a couple of pretty common NYC apartment problems: a teeny-tiny kitchen, and a bedroom with nearly non-existent clothes storage. The little sliver of the kitchen that you see in the photo above was all that would fit in the picture — it was really that small. But since there was no way to expand the footprint of the apartment, to make their kitchen bigger, they had to get creative.
