Derrick’s Organized Downtown Los Angeles Loft
Name: Derrick Johnson Location: Downtown, Los Angeles, California How did I end up in Downtown Los Angeles? It was all by chance while meeting a friend for lunch. We saw a sign that said loft tours and this loft was the first and last loft on that tour. I instantly fell in love. Its openness, natural light and historical details are the reasons why, five years later, I’m still proud to call Downtown Los Angeles my home.

Before & After: A Cold, Compact Kitchen Gets Cheery With Color!
Jenny describes the “before” of her compact kitchen best: it was safe. White walls, white cabinets. Not a lot of color, accessories, style or windows. It gave off about as much charm as a doctor’s office. So she decided to add color — but in a practical way. She’d keep the black floor tiles that hide dirt, but add a cheery pop of color in an unexpected place, and throw in some efficient storage ideas for good measure.

Before & After: A Vintage Sideboard Goes Matte & Midnight
What do you do when a wood sideboard — covered in deep scratches and other marks — needs a makeover but you’re not looking to brighten it with a coat of white? You could go with a color, or you could skip straight to something dramatic and do what Suzanne did. From Suzanne: This vintage sideboard was in need of a makeover. It had many deep scratches along the top and other marks and scratches.

Ildiko’s DIY-Filled Home in Hungary
Name: Ildiko Location: Budapest, Hungary We have a small (37m2 = 398 square foot) one-room apartment in Budapest downtown that we’ve transformed into an Airbnb rental. We had really little money to do it so my husband Andras and I did as much as we could by ourselves. Andras designed and built the cup holder coffee table. And I painted the paintings (except the one above the television, that is by Sara Osgyanyi).

Before & After: From Dated Dining Room to Bright Delight
Dark, dated wood paneling on the walls. Beige builder’s carpet on the floor. Even the curtains in this room were old news. Cara could have given up when tasked with turning this space into a dining room, but she persevered. And the result is a bright delight! From Cara: There is no question that it took a bit of vision and a large leap of faith to see the potential in our dining room. Paneling, old carpet, dated light fixtures.

Before & After: A Mudroom Masterpiece
Lana’s family needed a space to pull their stroller in, roll their bikes through, and let their umbrellas dry, and they didn’t want it to be fussy. They spent a weekend transforming this stodgy entry into a “fun spot to throw some shoes on.” So fun! We love the punch of personality that pattern gives this little room. Great job.

Before & After: A DIY Dream Kitchen
When Erin moved into her home, the kitchen looked like this: fluorescent lighting, dark wood cabinetry, beat up laminate countertop, and a fake brick backsplash. Not cute. So she got rid of the bad (laminate!) and kept the good (that cute rug) and made some major DIY upgrades that gave her kitchen both the look and functionality she needed. From Erin: With its galley layout and wall-to-wall upper cabinetry, work space was virtually nonexistent.

Before & After: A Thrift Store Cabinet Goes Glam
Leslie says,”When I saw this dull brown cabinet in the thrift store, it begged for glam.” Well, glam it up she did. Good eye, Leslie! Those mirrored panels really show off those door details. From Leslie: After primer and paint, I used a couple of packages of mirrored tiles from the big box hardware store. The top was a fake slate formica that totally dated the piece. I used a mitre saw, moldings and pewter appliance pulls to fabricate a new top that resembles a gallery tray.

Before & After: A Catch-All Laundry Room Gets Beautiful and Functional
Not everyone is brave enough to show off their laundry room like Anna. Hers was the room that accumulated all of the extra “I-don’t-quite-know-what-to-do-with-this-right-now-so-I’m-going-to-leave-it-here-and-forget-all-about-it.” Finally enough was enough and Anna decided her laundry room should be functional for, you know, actual laundry. How To Make the Most of Typical Rental Features: The Only Bathroom is Through the Bedroom

Here’s how to make the most of this sometimes awkward layout: Though I immediately discounted that flat, I’ve since discovered that this layout isn’t as ridiculous (or rare) as I once thought.
