The Tiny Houseboat That Makes Me Want to Escape Manhattan
Sure, tiny houses are great and all, but what’s better than a tiny house? A tiny houseboat. Besides the upper and lower decks, this stylish, modern houseboat has a comfortable but trim indoor footprint of 30 square meters, or 322 square feet — and if you get tired of where you’re docked, you can just pilot your little floating home to another shore.

A Tiny Norwegian Winter Cabin That’s Almost As Good As A/C
A tiny house covered in snow might seem like an unusual choice for a posting in August, but there’s a method to this madness. Doesn’t looking at that frost-encrusted landscape just make you feel cooler? And beyond that, there’s the design. Only 592 square feet and almost all roof, this tiny cabin is the perfect retreat from the elements, simultaneously very cozy and very modern.

The Most Popular Home in America: Why the Ranch Style is So Pervasive
If you’re thinking of buying a home, you’ve likely given a lot of thought to what style suits you best. Are you drawn to the sleek lines of modern architecture? Or are you a sucker for Craftsman style? If your answer happens to be the modern American ranch, well, you’re certainly not alone—according to a 2016 Trulia study, it’s the most popular pick in 34 states in the U.S.

The Painted Picture Frame Wall: A Unique, Affordable DIY Way to Add Architectural Interest
There was a lot to take in with this Spanish home tour. Like an amazing kitchen, stunning stairs, dreamy furniture and more. If you didn’t notice each incredible design detail of the home’s 7000 square feet, I wouldn’t blame you. So much to soak up! But while inspiration can be gathered from every room, there was one particular design idea I spotted in the nursery and loved…and it’s something I’ve never seen before.

The Homes that America Built: A Crash Course in Favorite American Architecture Styles
I have this argument with friends every now and again: What’s “American” food? The question inspires a lively discussion, with a lot of suggestions but no real consensus. (It usually comes down to hog dogs or Southern-style barbeque.) Nailing down American food is a tough thing because there is so much of America. So many people and cultures and styles that manage to blend together and evolve over the (few) centuries the country’s been around.

A Tiny German Apartment Packed Full of Personality (and Books!)
Forty square meters (or 430 square feet) is not a lot of space to work with, but the architects of this tiny German apartment managed to squeeze a lot of living—and a lot of personality—into a very small home. Another thing they managed to fit in? Room for lots and lots of books. The centerpiece of the apartment is the so-called “inhabitable wall”, a bookcase that stretches the length of one wall of the living room, and all the way to the ceiling.

5 Famous Architects Who Loved Millennial Pink Before it was Cool
While Millennial Pink might feel like the color story du jour, paint choices ranging from coral to deep fuchsia are far from a recent design phenomenon. Turns out, renown architects ranging from Frank Lloyd Wright in the pre-war years to Ricardo Bofill in the get-weird 60s were huge fans of pink in all its incarnations, swathing some now-historic landmarks in its cheeky hue.

Watch a Tiny Modern Cabin Neatly Fold Away
If you’re a creative type who’s ever dreamed of having a little spot to escape from distractions, or just a person who occasionally craves solitude and the embrace of nature, you’ll love this little writer’s cabin on an island in the Puget Sound. The house is walled by glass on three sides, opening it up to the surrounding wilderness, but it also has oversize shutters that can be opened and closed, turning it into a tiny little cocoon of a home.

Your Favorite Designers at Home: The Heralded Alvar Aalto’s Unassuming Helsinki Abode
Alvar Aalto, the Finnish architect and designer of the ubiquitous 3-legged stool (that spawned a perhaps even more ubiquitous IKEA knockoff), was also the creator of a lovely, very modern and yet very cozy, home on the outskirts of Helsinki. Often, the homes designers create for themselves tend toward the grandiose, but this one could be appropriately classified as humble, even subtle.

Built from a Kit: A Brief History of Sears Catalog Homes
Once, I bought a bag of dirt on the internet. I continue to be amazed by the variety of things you can buy on Amazon, but long ago, in the pages of the Sears Catalog, Amazon’s predecessor, you could even buy a house. Between the years of 1908 and 1942, the Sears Roebuck company sold more than 70,000 of these Sears Catalog homes, which were built in locations all over the country.

A Brief History of Brutalism, the Architectural Movement Loved by Critics and Hated by (Almost) Everyone Else
From the BBC and CNN and now the New York Times, the word has come: Brutalism, perhaps the most reviled of all architectural styles, is back. Here’s what you need to know about the movement associated with hulking concrete masses and Soviet apartment buildings, beloved of critics and the architectural elite but despised by pretty much everyone else. I first became aware of Brutalism in the way that many architecture students do: through the structures on their own college campus.

The 7 Swoon-Worthiest Shipping Container Homes
I think part of the reason shipping container houses are so appealing is that building a house from shipping containers is like the grown-up equivalent of making a really sweet fort from cardboard boxes — you have succeeded in making something awesome from something that you just found, something that would otherwise be in the trash. (Of course, the actual reality of shipping container homes is a bit more complicated than that — but there’s no denying they have a certain draw.

What It’s Like to Live in a Eichler “California Modern” Dream House
We toured Hope and Pete’s home a few years ago, and it instantly became a favorite house tour of mine. The couple’s style is breezy, bohemian and effortless — the kind of adjectives I aim for in my own home’s decor. But I also loved their house tour because they live in a mid-century (dream-to-me) home built in 1956 by famed real estate developer Joseph Eichler.

The Many Questions I Have About This Viral House: A List
Have you seen this house? It went viral this year after being uploaded to Reddit thread /r/funny back in March. User liquidthc is the one who noticed something strange about this South Carolina home—can you spot it? It initially took me awhile to notice this, despite realizing something was “off.” The comments, both on Reddit and Shareably, offer a host of possible scenarios—some of which I share below—but no definitive answers.

Old House, New Tricks: See How 3 Gorgeous Old Houses Were Outfitted for a New Century
Old houses filled with period furniture are lovely, of course, but that doesn’t mean that they all have to be a museum. Homes are allowed to grow and change with their owners and with the times, and sometimes that results in a pastiche of old surroundings and new furnishings that’s even more delightful than the sum of its parts. Check out these three old houses whose owners have embraced modernism, with beautiful and unexpected results.

GIF Magic: MORE Proof Architectural Details (Even Fake Ones) Are Worth It
Last week I showed off some magical GIFS that took out—and added back in—specific types of architectural detail. This week, I’ve got even more, in a similar vein, to look at. Because we’re not all living in our dream homes, seeing how certain types of architectural details add character demonstrates that it may be totally worth the time, money and energy to consider adding them to your own home.

2 People, 3 Cats, 309 Square Feet: A Magical Transforming Hong Kong Apartment
In Hong Kong, one of the most densely packed cities in the world, a young couple presented their architects with a seemingly impossible challenge: designing an apartment that would include a large kitchen, a home theater, a bathroom with a tub, and sleeping spaces for the couple and their overnight guests. The space also had to acommodate the couple’s three cats — and all this in 309 square feet.

The Secret History of the Closet
You probably think of a closet as a little room where you hang up your clothes. But for much of its history, the closet has served a completely different purpose entirely. Come back with me, if you will, to the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages having a bedroom was a bit of a privilege — most common folks slept either on the floor of the great hall of the manor where they lived, or in the single room that served them as kitchen, living room, dining room, and bedroom all in one.

An 85-Year-Old ‘Tiny House’ in the Style of Frank Lloyd Wright
We often talk about tiny houses and small space living as if they’re a new thing, but the truth is that little houses have been around for years (and were, in fact, once the norm for a majority of Americans). Case in point: this 85-year-old home, built by one of his disciples in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, whose compact 552 square foot floorplan provides plenty of inspiration for the small houses of today.

Amazing Architecture: London’s 2015 Serpentine Pavillion
My parents were in town the other week, so on a particularly beautiful September Sunday, my mum and I headed to Hyde Park to visit this year’s Serpentine Pavilion. The yearly structure is an event in the architecture world, as well as in the London cultural scene. (I previously wrote about London’s 2013 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion and, I must say, it’s still my favorite one.

Calvin and Kelly’s Modern Lightbox Home in Atlanta
Name: Calvin and Kelly Location: Atlanta, GA My better half, Kelly and I took on the task of building our dream home on an empty lot in an up and coming neighborhood in Old Fourth Ward, Atlanta. We had a few significant hardships along the way, some typical to most building experiences – Builder that took our money, bad sub-contractors, etc. You name it.

Small Space Swimming: Lap Pools
We love a good lap pool. They take up a fraction of the space of a traditional pool, and their elongated shape is so elegant and modern. There’s room to exercise, to splash around and have a drink on a hot day (because isn’t that the whole reason to have a pool?), and you can still have a backyard. While an ideal size for swimming laps is 6 feet in width by 60-75 feet in length, you can still fit a pool that accommodates exercise in as little as 30 feet.

I have to say I am in awe of his results. For $3000, David demoed, hauled and started building from the ground up. It only took him a few days and some hard work.
