I can still remember the Kindergarten tradition of making homemade menorahs at my Jewish day school like it was yesterday. Take a sawed-off 2×4, glue 10 small square tiles atop it, in a line (two at the center for the tallest candle), then place 9 screw nuts in a row, one on top of each tile. I’m pretty sure my parents even still have mine — somewhere. With Hanukkah mere hours away now, you may find yourself in need of a last minute menorah.

The temperatures are starting to drop, and if your home is a bit drafty, chances are there’s a space heater making its seasonal return from the depths of the closet. You might pick up bathroom essentials at J.C. Penney, but now you can get a new bathroom. The department store announced that it will start testing remodeling and other home services later this month. J.C. Penney’s CEO Marvin Ellison was on CNBC’s Power Lunch Thursday talking about the new initiative, which will also include services like installing home heating and cooling systems, quick-ship and installed blinds, whole home water solutions, awnings, and smart home technology.

IKEA’s new cabinets are literally garbage. Kungsbacka, the Swedish furniture retailer’s latest line of kitchen cabinets, is made from reclaimed industrial wood and recycled plastic bottles. IKEA collaborated with Swedish design studio Form Us With Love to create a sleek collection of anthracite cabinets with a matte finish (you know we love a black kitchen!). Each 15.75-by-31.5-inch cabinet uses 25 plastic bottles.

If the shoe fits, wear it, but what about a bed that’s made by Birkenstock? If the renowned comfort of the wildly successful footwear brand’s sandals is any indication, then we expect Birkenstocks’ line of beds (can we call them Birken-beds?) to feel like sleeping on clouds.

Canopy beds aren’t exactly a new concept. The New York Post is reporting that the company is planning to open a restaurant serving wine and beer as part of its BEYOND at Liberty View store in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
