Name: Elke Location: NSW AustraliaRoom Size: 10×10 square feet After sharing her older daughter Pippi’s space a few months ago, I waited with baited breath to see what amazing space Emily of The Beetleshack was going to come up with for her new baby, and she didn’t disappoint. Inspired by Rebekka Seale’s stamped bumblebee walls, Emily set about getting a similar look with removable wall stickers, and it made the space.

Sometimes the kitchen table will suffice, but if you’re tired of cleaning up math books and stray pencils every time you want to eat dinner, it may be time for a dedicated work space for you little one. Not only will it provide a home for their burgeoning backpack, it will give them a space to focus on that homework, complete that art project, and write in that journal. It seems that, increasingly, it’s becoming the norm for kids to have their own bedrooms, especially if there’s adequate space for it. But what if you have two rooms, two kids, and no playroom? Is it a better use of the space to have the kids share a bedroom? In my experience, young children don’t feel much of a need for a private bedroom. They would rather have ample space to play.

Name: Tyler (2 years) & Lucas (8 months)Location: Los Angeles, CARoom Size: About 10×12 ft Joy Dolan was just starting her interior design business when she and her husband Mike decided to add adoptive children to their family of 4 biological children. When they fell in love with a sibling pair from the Los Angeles foster care system, they fostered them and completed their adoption in about one year.

It’s easy to get over-excited when decorating a kids’ room, right? I mean, planning a room full of fun items, colorful things, cute things – I know from experience – makes it really hard to keep that cash in your pocket. And yet, as a parent I also know that overwhelming pressure to keep costs down for the family. So today we’re broaching the un-fun but essential topic of how to make that nursery creation or room-redo budget work.

Gemma and her husband have a baby on the way and, while they didn’t get pregnant just so they could design the nursery, for them, it was a welcome bonus. When they moved into their bungalow, the room was, as Gemma called it, “a hot turquoise mess.” With $600 to spend, they were able to fill the room with nursery essentials: a crib, dresser/changing table (they scored a used one and fixed it up) and a new rug.

Displaying your little one’s book collection is an easy way to make a huge impact on a nursery or bedroom design. Whether you’re going with the tried-and-true forward-facing bookshelf, grouping your books by color, or displaying a unique collection, the vivid colors and illustrations can serve in place of art. Here are twenty of my favorite displays to inspire you to show off your child’s reading material:  1.

Name: Cooper, 4 1/2 years Location: Pacific Palisades, CA Room Size: 350 sq ft When Morgan Simonds and her husband needed to decorate their kids’ rooms, they turned to fantastic L.A. interior design firm Jackson Paige. Kristine Paige Kamenstein, one of the co-founders of the company, took on the project and helped the Simonds turn their kids’ rooms into livable, beautiful spaces.

Front-facing book displays are a great way for the little ones to quickly find their favorite bedtime story, but many parents choose to use them as a design element in their child’s room as well. And why not? Books are basically beautiful, useable pieces of art. So for those of you looking for books that are easy on the eye and ear, here are fifteen that you and your children will love. 1. Project by: Jodie Rosen Design Location: Canada This is a big boy room for a 3-year-old boy, Dylan. The room is accessorized for a 3-year-old but as the child grows, the main pieces will remain age appropriate, and grow with him.This room started with the amazing fabric sourced from Tonic Living. From this jumping off point, we selected the Monte Design Toddler Dorma bed colours of charcoal with a navy pipe.

For some of us there’s no place like home, but for others wanderlust reigns supreme. Naturally the latter want to pass on their love of travel to their little ones, and what better place to start than where they’ll be spending much of their first few years of life – the nursery.

Name: Gemma (4 months) Location: Atlanta, Georgia We wanted something that wasn’t too cutesy, and we wanted a wall color and furniture that were gender neutral so we can reuse the room and just change out accessories if we have a boy in the future. The concept for the room came from my obsession with the baby animal photos from Sharon Montrose’s Animal Print Shop. I wish I had an excuse to buy more of them!

8-year-old Jake had been sharing a room with his older brother until the family decided it was time for each of the boys to have their own space. Their home had a small office that might serve for a third bedroom… after a few little adjustments. Okay, maybe a few big adjustments. Jake’s parents wanted a place where he could sleep, play, study, and host sleepovers — you know, kid things — but the room’s small footprint made this a bit of a challenge.

Name: Amina Location: Rome, ItalyThis is the room of my daughter Amina but is my room as well!I’m a single mum, and I haven’t the ability to get a bigger house for us, but I am happy and proud of our small room for two. Name: BenicioLocation: Silver Lake- Los Angeles, CARoom Size: 125 Square Feet When you’re the child of a very talented interior designer such as Rosa Beltran, founder of Rosa Beltran Design in Los Angeles, you’re guaranteed to have a pretty awesome nursery. 15-month-old Benicio has an incredible room chock full of fun and inspiration that he’ll get to explore as he grows.

We often extol the virtues of creating a nursery that will grow with your child and we still believe that. But if you find design and decorating fun, maybe you are looking forward to updating the nursery to a “big kid” room. Reader Laura felt it was time to go from “the land of the dinosaurs” to “swimming with the fishes” in her son’s new, nautical bedroom.

Cribs are often passed down from sibling to sibling, or within extended families, and it seems crazy to buy a new one if a secondhand one is perfectly solid and safe. But how do you make a crib that might be a little tired or outdated seem fresh and new? Here are five nurseries that made secondhand cribs work with style.1. Tessa’s family mixed up the wood grain.

If there is one thing I never tire of while working with children’s design every day, it’s seeing new Scandinavian-style children’s rooms. They seem so fresh to my American eyes, so different from the character-driven or über modern bedrooms I’m used to here. In an effort to capture a little bit of Sweden stateside, I’ve put together a little “how-to” list to get your fjord on.

Some parents worry that their baby’s closet is too small, but what if all you have for a nursery IS a closet? Kari has been inspired by all the small nurseries we’ve shown in the past and wanted to share her own small space baby project: her closet turned nursery.  Kari writes: We are about to have a daughter and wanted to stay in our one-bedroom apartment, so we converted our walk-in closet into a nursery. Our space was 43′ x 77′.

The only time I’ve ever slept in a bunk bed was at summer camp, and I loved it. While most of us aren’t sleeping away in cabins, everyone can use space-saving furniture. For kids, lofted and bunk beds are a great option.Bunk beds free up floor space in a shared kids room, and you can configure them to work for two, three, and even four beds. A lofted bed can work for kids (and, as in image 5, a baby and crib) as well as adults (Images 2 and 9).Bunk & Loft Inspiration:1.

The corner nursery nook is popping up in cities such as London and New York where parents might be avoiding upsizing until absolutely necessary and mothers are less than thrilled to move while pregnant too. Having a baby in the bedroom doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and sanity. In fact, many mothers claim that they sleep better having the baby in their room instead of relying on a baby monitor.

Nancy was recently faced with the challenge of completing a quick and affordable bedroom makeover for a couple who is adopting three siblings. She transformed a guest room into a bright and airy girl’s room in only five days, and while there are plenty of lovely touches in the space, it’s her simple and cheap solution for a wall treatment that really stopped me in my tracks.

Project by: Meghan Shadrick/Meghan’s Inspired InteriorsLocation: Arlington, MAMy client wanted to make the most of the space for her two young boys sharing a bedroom, all the while keeping it fun, fanciful, and functional. Since the boys were sharing the room, she also wanted a spot for each boy to call their own. To top off the wishlist, they also needed a spot to sit and do homework. The boys longed for a castle themed room, and their wish was my command!

What child (or adult, for that matter!) doesn’t love cocooning in small, intimate spaces?  As kids, we’re compelled to build houses out of boxes, forts out of furniture and tents out of tables — all in an attempt to seclude ourselves from the world and to create a space where our imaginations can roam free… These rooms and images respond to children’s natural instinct to play and hide by incorporating soft, comforting nooks in which to nestle.

Project by: Robert Gil, Casa Kids Location: Manhattan Last year I wrote about two common approaches to shared kids’ bedrooms: creating one cohesive space for both kids or creating divided, private spaces within a room. Roberto Gil, founder of Casa Kids, gave the best of both worlds to his clients, sisters in downtown Manhttan, with this creatively designed room.

Name: Pippi Location: NSW Australia Room Size: 172 sq. feet When I came across the space that Emily had created for her daughter, Pippi, I was instantly smitten by the playful patterns and vibrant colors. Her goal was to create a fun and flamboyant space for her toddler, and I’d say she hit the nail on the head. The room exudes the playfulness and joy of childhood. Read on to learn more about this whimsical wonderland: How would you describe the look and feel of this room?

Name: Baby GLocation: United States When I began planning our baby’s nursery, I knew I wanted a clean, elegant look. My husband and I decided not to find out the gender of our baby before he was born, so we tried to keep everything gender-neutral. The theme of this nursery was inspired by the handmade linen cloud mobile I discovered from an Etsy shop. I wanted a cloud themed nursery, but not to the extent of painting them on the walls.

Name: Baby Jude (4 months)Location: VirginiaRoom Size: 10′ x 12′ Kate and her husband live in a historic neighborhood in Virginia in a house that is over 100 years old. When they decided they would need a nursery, they turned to a small guest room that needed some serious TLC. After removing plaster, trim with lead paint, windows, and carpet that was glued to the floor, they spent an entire year reconstructing the room with new windows, drywall, refinished floors and crown moulding.

When Brooke and Luke found out they were expecting a baby boy, they decided to turn their office into a nursery. The problem was, it felt like more of a “man room” than a little guy’s nursery with its dark, knotty pine walls. So Brooke and Luke decided to roll up their sleeves and work a little magic with primer and paint. I love it when kids’ rooms look like, well… a room fit for a kid! This is a great example of a clean, organized, yet creative space for a little one to flourish.Kara Rosenlund designed this room to be a cheerful, relaxed space perfect for a growing little boy. From the dramatic floor-to-ceiling chalkboard walls, to the sunny ceiling fan, to the “grass” rug on the floor, there’s no risk of mistaking this room for a serious grownup space.

For her twin girls, Abbie created a nursery that had — wait for it — not a lick of pink, and an amazing focal point. Take a look at how how she anchored the room, after the jump! When expecting her first child, Susannah did what many folks do in preparation: convert the extra guest room to a nursery. She clearly enjoyed the process, gathering everything she’d need for her first born from sources from Target to Etsy to Craigslist. You want to see how it turned out? You know what to do…Susannah did a great job mixing fun and colorful patterns. The spot above the changing table is ready and waiting for a photo of her soon-to-be-born baby boy.

Isn’t LEGO an amazing toy? I find it so hard to resist the urge to buy more. Proof: at a yard sale a few months ago I bought 10 gallons of the stuff. Whoops. Now, where on earth does someone store all that?There are two schools of LEGO storage, either keep blocks together in one big pile, or separate blocks into groups – by set, color, or type of block. When your child is younger you probably want to go with the “big pile” option (this will help with cleaning up, too!

Michele’s son had outgrown his room’s decor, and everyone was sick of the orange, purple and red color scheme. It took a couple of weeks to re-do it completely, using a lot of what they already owned, plus adding a few new things to the mix. The goal was to keep it affordable and simple.This room might win the award for the most handmade things in one space.

When Jane and her husband bought their new house, they were less than thrilled with the outdated and sad bedroom that would be their son’s nursery. The wallpaper was old, the walls were in bad shape and, to cap it off, there was a very, very skeevy bed that lived in there. Eight months pregnant, Jane got to the tedious work of stripping the wallpaper, repairing walls and then building the room back up from scratch.Today, the nursery is a far cry from its humble beginnings.

Rachel of VanHook & Co. is sharing a project that features paint in an unexpected way: refinishing a worn out wooden floor in her kids’ room.A painted floor may not be a DIY for the faint of heart, but the floor in Rachel’s kids’ room turned out beautifully. After experimenting with paint on their hallway floors, Rachel and her husband decided to apply a distressed version to their children’s room.

Name: DylanLocation: Greenbrae, CARoom Size: 10′ x 12′ What to do when the baby you expect to be a girl turns out to be a bouncing baby boy? Call an expert to help you rethink your nursery plans. That’s exactly what happened to this family when they were expecting baby Dylan. The couple had already started decorating the nursery with a backdrop of delicate dragonflies when they found out that the baby they were eagerly anticipating was actually a little boy.

Whether siblings need to bunk together due to space constraints or because they want to, sharing a bedroom is often a convenient solution. Not only does it save space, it teaches them to share space. One of the biggest challenges to designing a space that most likely is shared by children of different ages is creating a restful and inspiring bedroom that fits all their varying needs.

Name (Age): Hayden (12 weeks)Location: Seal Beach, CaliforniaRoom Size: 15′ x 11′ One wouldn’t generally think a room with white walls, furniture, and bedding could ever be called colorful, but add a few pops of neon here and there and what was once a monochromatic space suddenly leaves a very colorful impression. That’s exactly what Andrea decided to do in her littlest one’s nursery.

Child: Malcolm (4)Location: Oakville, OntarioRoom size: 10′ x 12′ Canadian designer, painter, and blogger Christine Dovey is constantly on a quest for the perfect score for her nearly perfect home. Yet she keeps perfection just out of reach, because what will she do when she’s done? Oh, perhaps she will take care of her three (soon to be four!) children. There’s that, too.

I love Before and Afters that feature something hideous or lackluster transformed into something beautiful and creative. This is not that kind of Before and After. This is a perfectly nice guest room completely overhauled to become a “big boy” room for a 2-year-old.Amanda wrote to share this house project with us. The carpeting stayed, but that is about the only thing that didn’t change, including the paint on the walls.

Name: MichaelLocation: Venice, CARoom Size: 10 ft x 12 ft Stylist Emily Henderson is no stranger to fun, eclectic and whimsical design. When I was asked to photograph this adorable nursery with her, I immediately felt how strong the aesthetic was and wanted to share it in a tour. Turning Michael’s family’s design wishes into fruition she has created a gorgeous space that he will continue to grow into.

One rainy weekend Lora Neveu decided to build a charming little dream escape in a window nook in her daughter’s room that had remained empty and unused. Follow me after the jump to see what she came up with.Two days and $165 later, Lora had created a wonderful and cozy space that doubles as a play/nap and storage area. She built a simple box and divider out of plywood and brackets, painted, added cushions, lanterns, and drapes, and then she was done.

Gray may not be the first color one thinks of for a nursery, but more and more parents are choosing it for their little ones. Gray’s versatility allows for serious creativity in furniture and decor choices – it coordinates with virtually ever other color. Not to mention that its soothing nature is perfect for a sleeping space. But it can be tricky when it comes time to choose the perfect shade.

Name: Olivia Ellen (3)Location: Copenhagen, DenmarkRoom Size: 107 sq ft When your mother is a professional stylist you know you’re going to end up with an amazing room. Rikke Graff Juel designed this space for her daughter, Olivia Ellen, in much the same Scandinavian style as the rest of her home – white walls, plenty of vintage wood pieces combined with fresh modern colors and accessories.

Name: Ruby (2)Location: Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, AustraliaRoom Size: 10′ x 12′, 120 sq ft How to make a minimalist nursery still feel fun and inviting? Add color, texture, and a dash of whimsy. That’s exactly what Ruby’s mom, Danielle, did when she designed this space. The clean and simple design lends itself to easy changes as Ruby grows, while the hand woven hemp rug, crocheted pouf, colorful accessories, and wood floors add warmth and character to the space.

Name: Harriet (6 months)Location: Cheverly, MD My husband and I moved to our present house about six months before our daughter, Harriet, was born. Turning the small bedroom into her nursery was, sadly, pushed to the end as our list of projects for the home (complete kitchen redo) grew longer and longer.Finally, with about two months to go I knew I needed to sit down and decide what we were going to do. Honestly, I agonized for weeks over what colors to paint the room.

Names: Henry (almost 3) and Adela (2 months)Location: Brooklyn, New YorkRoom size: Approximately 100 square feetAmanda de Beaufort who pens the always delightful children’s style blog, Coos and Ahhs, has completed her tour de force. After years of squeezing into a bedroom with her husband and young son, her second pregnancy finally forced the space issue.

Name: “Bebe Pelanne”Location: Manhattan, NY When we found out we were pregnant the search for a larger one bedroom or upgrade to a two bedroom began. However, if anyone has opened up the NY real estate section lately you will find the rent prices have soared. We decided to stay in our one bedroom, and divide the room. The actual space is 6′ x10.5′, which was surprisingly enough space for a nice nursery.

Name: K.P.C. (7 months)Location: Ottawa, Canada K’s nursery was pieced together with the intention of creating a fun, whimsical, “make me wanna smile” space to enjoy. My husband and I love to spend time in the nursery with our little man and we think (hope) he enjoys it as much as we do.We didn’t find out the gender ahead of time, so this room actually started out as gender neutral.

Children, by nature, are little collectors. So it goes to follow that the Eclectic Collector “style” is perfectly suited to their rooms. Their parents have given them a head start in this area, and have created rooms that welcome varying affinities, whether they decide to acquire sea shells or race cars.

Piper’s bedroom is stunning. I love the over the top plush palette of girly fun. With the help of her mom Traci (of Nursery Works) and Tamara Honey (of House of Honey), Piper has a room that she can welcome and grow into. It’s sophisticated enough for a teenager though she’s still got a few years to be a kid and enjoy its lighthearted approach.

Name: Jasper (2) Location: Melbourne, Australia Room size: 322cm x 260cm (10.56 x 8.5feet) Jasper’s mama Kate is a Renaissance woman in every sense of the word. In addition to having a PhD in Renaissance Illuminated Manuscripts, she has been a business owner, corporate facilitator, and yoga teacher. It is in her current incarnation as a designer, blogger and mother that we find her, and she’s the ingenious force behind her son Jasper’s bright and delightful room.

Kids: 6 year old girl, 5 and 2.5 year old boysLocation: Madison, WIRoom Size: 10′ x 10′ Meg is the creative force behind the popular blog Elsie Marley and the creative mom behind the three siblings who live in this room. We loved it back when it was just a little nursery for one, then Meg made space for another child, and then another. Sharing a 1,000 square foot two-bedroom home in Wisconsin, this family of five has done more than simply making do with a small space.

Name: Daphne (1 month)Location: Charleston, SC Size: 10′ x 13′ Many nurseries start off as home offices that are then bequeathed to the newest family member upon their arrival. This was the case with Deirdre’s office which she used for three years before finding out she was expecting. Luckily, the paint color worked well for the nursery she had in mind.How did your office become Daphne’s nursery?

Name: Axel (6 months)Location: Denton, TX (about 30 miles north of Dallas)Room Size: 13′ x 13′ Anna and Luis took every opportunity to be bold and playful in their choices for decorating their son’s nursery. From the wonky chevron wall to the handmade wall decor, everything they did works to create a masculine space that can grow with Axel.

Name: Cameron (5)Location: Sherman Oaks, CARoom Size: 16′ x 16′ Now that Cameron is five years old, he wanted a cool, big boy room. The room is definitely all boy and the graphic wallpaper and bold colors give it a more modern aesthetic. The space is pretty large for child’s room, so his parents were faced with the challenge of dividing up the room into different play areas. Designer Shirry Dolgin helped bring the design together to create a special room for Cameron.

Name: Saf, 10 monthsLocation: Silver Spring, MDRoom Size: about 8′ x 6.5′, 52 sq ft Of all the rooms in our house, Saf’s tiny nursery is the one that elicits the strongest reactions. When we set out to put together his pint-size dwelling on a pint-size budget, we looked to things we already owned to set the tone. Saf is our third baby, and now that we have a bit of experience under our belts, we know how quickly babies move out of the nursery stage.

Names: Lauren & Miranda (18 months)Location: Edmonds, WARoom Size: 12′ x 13′ Sure, kids love animals and parents love designing kids’ rooms with animal themes. But this nursery design is a mean modern interpretation of the well used safari theme and has something very special going on. By day, it’s bright, friendly, and modern. By night, the pièce de résistance is revealed when this safari sanctuary is transported under a sea of stars.

Name: Collin (6 months)Location: Seattle, WA We found out two days before Collin was born that we were picked by his birthmom to become his adoptive parents. That didn’t leave us a lot of time to plan a nursery…so we didn’t.It wasn’t until Collin was two months old that I started to create his little room. I wanted it to be fresh, clean and a space he wouldn’t grow out of. My husband is a pilot and I loved the idea of adding a little touch of aviation to the room.

Name: Julian Grey (2)Location: Beaverton, OregonRoom Size: 10′ x 15′, 150 sq ft Julian Grey’s room stole my heart during my recent visit to the incredible Rummer home of Jonya and Bradley Streeper. It is full of handmade stuffed animals, cherished books and great design ideas for any space.

Name(s): Elsa Ida McMillan, 7 monthsLocation: Long Beach, CalforniaRoom Size: 10′ x 15′, 150 sq ft. Elsa is the beloved 7 month old of Jeff and Liv McMillan, who are both incredibly artistic and creative people. Over a year ago, I joined Marcia Prentice to photograph their home in Long Beach for a House Tour. Liv was a couple months pregnant and they had yet to begin converting Jeff’s old studio into what is now the baby nursery.

Names: Oscar (2 years) & Boots (4 years)Location: Mar Vista – Los Angeles, CaliforniaRoom Size: 150 square feet When your dad’s an artist and your mom’s an art producer + blogger you’ll probably grow up surrounded by incredible paintings, photography and sculptures. This tiny bedroom is shared by two boys, Oscar and Boots, where they share a custom made bunk bed and are surrounded by creativity.

Name: Satchel (3 years) and Eero (10 months)Location: Palo Alto CARoom Size: 10′ x 12′ Have you ever seen an outfit and thought to yourself, “Hey, I want to turn that look into a room?” Well, Whitney and her husband Kevin did just that. They found themselves taking risks with patterns, textures, and color that they may not have done otherwise.

Name: Lulu (2)Location: Santa Monica, CA (Ocean Park)Room Size: 11′ x 11′ Souris Hong-Porretta’s home is infused with personality, art and a sense of time and place. Her daughter Lulu’s room is no different. It’s charmingly hip and playful and mature enough to last for years (take out the crib and this room can take Lulu through her teen years).

Name: Aiden (14 months)Location: Stevenson Ranch, CaliforniaRoom Size: 11′ x 11 1/2′ Interior designer, Jennifer Hsu, recently finished a project for a very special client – her son. I have heard many interior designers say that they are their toughest client. Jennifer and her husband put in the extra care to make sure everything was just perfect for their little man. I am in love with the results; so calming and so perfect!

Name: JaneAge: 8 (she’s Charlie’s twin)Location: Los Angeles, CARoom Size: 15′ x 15′ When Jane moved into her brother’s room (her brothers now share a room), she wanted to have a say about decorating her new bedroom. Interior designer, Kristin Panitch, helped her realize her dream space. The chalkboard wall was left over from when it was her brother’s room. Like many girls, she wanted light pink walls and all the artwork in her room is her own.

Name: Charlie and Henry Age: Charlie: 8 Henry: 10 Location: Los Angeles, CA Room Size: 15′ x 15′ Bunk bed love! Charlie and Henry share a room, but each have their own area in the shared space. Designer Kristen Panitch designed built-in bunk beds and a bookcase/desk, which helped maximize the space and keep the room organized. The design of the room is definitely all-boy, but check back in tomorrow for their sister’s (Jane) pink bedroom.

Name: Mila (6 weeks)Location: Glendora, CaliforniaRoom Size: 9 1/2′ x 14′ Designing the perfect nursery can be a little overwhelming. Alex and Jackie decided to let interior designer Jenika Kurtz take over the process. Jenika has experience designing nurseries for friends, so they were really excited to get her help and advice on their special room.How would you define the style of the nursery design?Parents: Contemporary and super cool!

What happens when you take over your sister’s bedroom? You scramble to rid the space of everything pink and girly.
