Freia’s Cozy, Colorful Corner in the Master Bedroom
Name: Freia Location: Berkeley, California Room Size: Tiny! Her corner is probably 5′ x 5′ feet at most, but it is part of our main bedroom (that part is probably 6′ x 8′) When I first discovered little Freia’s nursery, I never would have guessed it was but a tiny corner of the master bedroom in mom Audrey’s two-bedroom rental.

Oscar’s Bright, Bold Abode
Name: Oscar (5) Location: Den Bosch, the Netherlands Room Size: 3.5 x 3.5 meters I’m not sure if it was the bright yellow bed, the wall of beautiful books, or the fabulous wallpaper, but it was love at first sight when I laid eyes on Oscar’s room. I’ve always been drawn to spaces that combine both vintage and modern pieces, and I absolutely adore both bright white spaces and those filled with bold colors. This room is the perfect union of all of those elements.

Baby G’s Bright, Playful Space
Name: Baby G Location: Bologna, Italy Room Size: 4.5 x 3.5 meters I love coming across a nursery that incorporates all of my favorite elements—white and bright, yet colorful, a nice mix of both modern and vintage, and most importantly, something that is whimsical and playful enough for a child to enjoy. Alessandra of Almalu’s Place did just that when she created a nursery for her precious little bambino.

Kura For Two? Using IKEA’s Low Loft As A Bunk Bed
Reversible and versatile, the IKEA Kura bed is shaping up to be a firm favorite of Scandi-style and budget-loving parents the world over. Before & After: Pepto Pink to Serene Seaside Boy’s Bedroom
Danielle’s son Conor was distressed by the pink walls in his new bedroom. In fact, they made him cry. A fresh paint job and several DIY projects later, his new beachy boy’s room was making a splash. Danielle: The day after we moved into our home, Conor came down the stairs crying. Absolutely sobbing and we begged him to tell us what was wrong. Did he have a nightmare? Was he scared sleeping in a new house? No, it was none of that. He was upset that he woke up in a pink room….

Vivian’s Vivacious Nursery
Name: Vivian (2) Location: San Francisco, CA Room Size: 12’x14’ I immediately fell in love with Vivian’s nursery when I first came across it — I loved that the space looked like something I’d want for myself, but still felt colorful, happy, and fun enough to be equally perfect for a little one.

Before & After: Beige Room Glammed Up for a Baby Nursery
Project by: Britt F. Gage/For You, By Me Location: Queens, New York City Britt Gage was hired to bring some glamour to this space in anticipation of Felicity Adele’s arrival in the world. Nina’s Little House Nursery
Name: Nina James Location: Johannesburg, South Africa When I first came across this South African nursery, I was dying to know who made the adorable little house bed. I was certainly very surprised to learn that the bed is actually going to become a crib and is a DIY project created by Nina James’ talented parents! It’s definitely the focal point of this unique, modern nursery, but the rest of the space is full of wonderful little surprises as well.

Before & After: Wood Paneled Office Turned Bright, Fresh Nursery
Kelly and her husband bought their first home in Spanish Town, Baton Rouge and it had a lot of…character. They’ve been sprucing it up ever since and their recent project was to transform this office space into a room to welcome their new baby. Two big challenges: decorating for either a boy or a girl and making this dark, claustrophobic space into a happy, bright room for their child.

Before & After: A Pulled Together Kids’ Room
This is not an “OMG! You lost 100 lbs.!” kind of makeover. This is more like,”Hmmnn…did you change your hair? get new glasses?” But therein lies the beauty: small changes are sometimes all that’s needed to make a room feel pulled together. The bedroom above belongs to Noah and his little sister Everly and here it is after a few simple changes: So, what changed? The blue paint is gone, there’s a new bedside table, new artwork and a new, cozy rug.

George’s Magical Woodland Nursery
Name: George (1) Location: Los Angeles, California Room Size: 11′ x 12′ There’s really nothing more magical than childhood, so it seems quite fitting when I come across a child’s room that feels more like a wonderland than a simple spot to sleep. Maybe it’s the twinkle lights or perhaps it’s the unicorn, but there’s something about this sweet nursery that is just so dreamy. How would you describe the look and feel of this room?

Before & After: Plain Jane IKEA Bunk Bed To Indoor Kids Cabin
IKEA’s KURA loft bed usually steals the spotlight in terms of hacks and makeovers, but this transformation of the plain Jane MYDAL into a playhouse for an 8-year-old girl shows just how much potential this higher bunk has. With some plywood, 512 screws and some fabric, this bunk became a tented sleeping area (reached by TROFAST “stairs”), a reading nook with a hammock and a mini desk. Not to mention the adorable flower boxes and bucket on a pulley!

Before & After: Dingy Closet Turned Happy Play Space
When Sarita and her husband bought an old home that needed a lot of work, they cooked up a plan to keep their two young daughters occupied and not underfoot while they spruced it up. Their mission: transform this unappealing closet into a happy play space. Sarita describes the project: This tiny closet is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door. I work as a muralist for children’s spaces and love colour! I was anxious to play with bold and bright yellows.

Before & After: A First-Time Upholsterer Tackles a Rocker
Dania was on the hunt for a rocker to go with the fresh blue and cream nursery she was planning for her new son. This old green vinyl rocker from her in-laws worked just fine…but wasn’t quite the look she was going for. And though she had never upholstered anything before, she tackled this task, and the result is impressive! From Dawn: The original chair came from her in-laws, and while it was in great functioning shape, the green vinyl upholstery wasn’t in the best shape.

Jasper’s Bold, Beachy Abode
Name: Jasper (7) Location: Sydney, Australia Room Size: 3m x 3.2m I always admire when a kid’s room is reflective of his interests, but still manages to be stylish. That’s one thing I’ve always struggled with reconciling — throwing Elsa and Anna all over the place and painting the room Barney purple just isn’t my idea of fun. Luckily I think my daughter and I have struck a good balance, and I bet the same can be said of Jasper and his mom, Simone.

Before & After: Drab Student Space to a Cottage-Inspired Boy’s Bunk
When Emma’s family purchased this aging row house in Kingston, Ontario each of the three floors was a separate apartment. This room was occupied by a student and was filled with cheap furniture and textbooks. It needed a lot of love to match the vision she had for her 5-year-old son Angus’s space.

Before & After: Blank Slate to Modern, Gender-Neutral Nursery
Project by: Allison Harlow of Curio Design Studio Project type: e-design Location: Miami, Florida This space provided lots of challenges! To make things more complicated the client wanted to keep the gender of their baby a surprise and create a nursery that was modern, gender neutral, mature and utilized mostly neutral colors.

Before & After: Plain Jane Changing Table Gets a Quick, Easy Upgrade
Changing tables aren’t usually very memorable which is why we like this simple idea for customizing and adding color to one. This nursery DIY is quick, non-permanent and only requires a pair of scissors and some yarn. The folks at bedding company Little Auggie gussied up this IKEA Gulliver changing table with four colors of yarn which they wrapped around the side dowels. You can create any pattern you fancy – perhaps an ombre or just one single color you love.

Before & After: Plain Dresser Gets a Heroic Makeover
Amanda’s boys had defaced this plain Jane dresser, so she decided to give it a heroic update with some super fabric: From Amanda: After years of carrying around these boring dressers that my children had graffitied, I figured it was time for a new look. A random stop into Walmart yielded the motivation I needed: 2 yards of Marvel comic book hero fabric. A little mod podge and some bright color paint was all I needed to make the magic complete.

Before & After: A Small, Narrow Bedroom Gets Everything It Needs
Small bedrooms are always a challenge but a very narrow room has particular design obstacles to overcome. This bedroom, a former maid’s room in a pre-war building, is only 5’7″ wide – less than the length of a typical twin bed. The solution? A lofted space for sleeping leaving ample room for a workspace and storage for the young occupant. Casa Kids in Brooklyn took on this project with designer Roberto Gil at the helm.

Before & After: Dresser Ships Off to Big Boy Room
Amy’s 3-year-old was ready for a big kid room inspired by the high seas. This thrift store dresser could’ve walked the plank, but a nautical makeover turned it into a hidden treasure. From Amy: I started by giving the entire piece a thorough cleaning and painting it with Annie Sloan’s “Old Ochre” chalk paint. I sketched the ship graphic onto the front and painted it in with Annie Sloan’s “Coco”, then did a wash over the entire dresser with Coco.

Before & After: Turning a Walk-In Closet Into a Nursery
With a baby on the way, Anna and her husband had to decide how they were going to fit a little person in their San Francisco one bedroom. The walk-in closet held the solution. From Anna: We had no extra room for a baby. The only “room” we had was our walk-in closet so we decided to convert that to our nursery. Or what we so lovingly call, a “Closery.” It took us about 2 months to purge all of our stuff and find wardrobes to replace the clothes we were keeping.

Is a Nursery Even Necessary?
New crib, new crib mattress, new rug, new curtains, new rocker, new wall art, new bookshelves, new dresser, new change mat—no doubt about it, the nursery business is big business. But do we really all need to buy into it? I mean, is it possible to just do no nursery? Would that be okay? How would that work? Well, ultimately, the answer to that question is going to be personal. And by personal, I mean it’s going to depend on you.

6 Things You Can Throw Out Of Your Kid’s Room Right Now
Ever open the door of your kid’s room and think: oh my, there is just too much stuff in here? Well today—seriously, today—let’s throw some of that junk away. Here’s where to start: 1. Recycle papers from school. Not everything is a masterpiece. Not everything will even be noticed if it is gone. Kids bring home reams upon reams of paper from school. Fight back. Recycle. 2. Throw out broken crayons. No kid draws with broken crayons.

Area Man Builds Daughter Incredible Tree Bedroom, Strong Contender for World’s #1 Dad
Name: Lia ( 6 years old) Location: Bellevue, Washington My daughter wanted a fairy tree in her room that she could sit inside and read books, climb the branches, and also have a top sitting area. I’m a professional video game artist and make virtual worlds for a living, so while I thought I could come up with the aesthetic idea, I was kind of un-prepared for the physical realities of this project. A Sophisticated Restful Nursery
Name: Lawrence (Newborn) Location:Sydney, Australia My husband and I live in a rented two bedroom apartment in Sydney. Bo’s Timeless Scandinavian Nursery
Name: Bo (8 Months) Location: Oslo, Norway When creating a bedroom for our son Bo, we wanted it to tie in with the rest of our apartment and not be overly babyish. Baby specific decor rapidly gets outdated and needs to be updated, as kids grow older. So instead we opted for a more timeless and ageless look, with furniture that lasts (in terms of function, aesthetics and quality) and can grow with him.

A Red, White & Blue Boys Room
Name: Cayden and Kyle (6 and 11 months) Location: Providence, Rhode Island We started this room years ago in this theme — there’s something about the classic red, white and blue that just says little boys to me, I love it! Although it’s a small space, it carries a big punch with a mix of fun patterns to differentiate this room from the rest of our neutral home. Overall, I had really hoped to create a fun and cozy space for my two boys to share.

Paige’s Dreamy Victorian-Boho Bedroom
Name: Paige (10) Location: Dallas, Texas This makeover was inspired by my colorful daughter. The jumping off point for the entire room was bright ikat fabric that was used for the custom drapes and my daughter’s desire for a canopy bed. The look is what I like to call Victorian-Boho. I selected a subdued color for the wall so the room would age with her as she grows into a teenager.

When you are pregnant in Las Vegas in the summer a cooler Alaskan vacation is more than welcome. A picture I took of Mt. Denali at sunset was the inspiration to paint an ombre mountain range on all of the walls of the nursery. The colors of the nursery I pulled from a spontaneous maternity picture my husband took while we visited the top of a glacier.

Only a few months after buying our first home and moving into this 1927 fixer-upper, I found out that I was expecting my second child.
