Before & After: Chaos Cupboard to Boy Cave
When Sara’s family moved into this house, they had a long series of DIY and renovation projects to tackle and the closet you see above became their “chaos cupboard” – toys, tools, spare pillows, old curtains, and a de facto staging area for their next project. Sara described it as “an embarrassing vortex of stuff.

Small Kids’ Room Strategy: Toddler-Size Bunk & Loft Beds
Recently I came across the image above of small bunk beds in the shared bedroom of 4-year-old twins and realized I’d never seen mini bunks like this. They are the same size as a toddler bed (i.e. the size of a crib mattress) and offer a stop-gap solution for parents looking to eke out another year or two in their current space. First, a word about safety: Although these beds are sized for toddlers—i.e.

Nurseries in the Master Bedroom
Although my husband and I shared our bedroom with each of our babes for a little over three months, we knew it was a temporary solution, and, as such, no decor changes were made to our adult haven. But what if there is no other nursery waiting for your little bundle of joy? Here are some inspiring ideas for carving out a special space for your baby without making it feel like your room has been taken over by baby safari animals, primary colors, and cutesy prints: 1.

Eden’s Sweet and Cozy Nursery
Name: Eden Location: Richmond, Virginia Room Size: 7′ x 9′ The moment I walked into this nursery, I wanted to plop down on the rocking chair and hang out in there all afternoon! Laura did a great job making a small space feel both cozy and bright, and attributes a lot of that coziness to the fact that most of the items in the nursery are gifted from friends and family who wanted to be a part of baby Eden’s life.

Addison’s White & Bright Charmer
Name: Addison (5) Location: Dallas, TX Room Size: 12×14 There are so many things about Addison’s room that I love – the bright, white color palette, pops of fun color, and the amazing marquee letter to name a few. But perhaps the most impressive thing is that her mom, Ginny, was able to create such a happy, vibrant, and personal space in their lovely rental home.

8 Ways to Make a Small Kid’s Room Feel Bigger by Drawing Attention to the Ceiling
Just because you can’t actually make a room bigger, doesn’t mean you can’t trick the eye into making it appear and feel bigger. One of the most effective ways to do this is to draw the eye upward toward the ceiling making the walls seem higher and giving the room an air of expansiveness. Here are eight real-room examples—not all of them are small—but you can apply the ideas to your own small room. Embellish the ceiling.

Stylish Convertibles: Cribs to Toddler Beds
Almost 5 years ago, when I began planning my son Alex’s nursery, I didn’t have a great vision of what I wanted his room to be beyond the crib stage. We looked into converting the crib to a toddler bed but it had such an awkward appearance, with very tall head/ footboard, such that it resembled the letter H. It also required the purchase of a conversion kit, so we opted for a full size bed and bypassed the toddler bed altogether.

Decorate by Numbers: Numerical Kids Decor
Math, they say, is the universal language. And it’s a lot prettier than Esperanto, so why not choose some number-based decor to get your child started early? I’ve rounded up some of my favorite pieces for kids’ rooms featuring a plethora of digits as well as some inspirational spaces using numbers as decor. Bold Number Cards are displayed on a shelf in SwissMiss creator Tina Roth Eisenberg’s daughter’s room on Design*Sponge.

Kim wanted to update her son Carter’s nursery into a big boy room. They never used the room except for sleeping, and it was stuffed with forgotten gifts and baby gear. Kim knew she wanted the new space to be light and airy and to reflect Carter’s personality and interests, so she painted the walls a bright white, added a splash of Carter’s favorite color on the ceiling, and added fresh accessories: What a stunning transformation! Thank you Kim!

A Photographic Ode to IKEA’s Expedit in Kids’ Rooms
IKEA’s announcement last week that they were discontinuing the ubiquitous Expedit storage unit was, ultimately, much ado about nothing as its replacement, called Kallax, is nearly identical. But the public outcry by many fans was a reminder of how beloved this versatile and functional piece is. The Expedit transcends nationality, budget and decor styles as you can see in this gallery of children’s rooms.

Before & After: Finn’s Bright and Airy Nursery Transformation
With baby Finn on the way, mom Kelli of Purple Tree Photography wanted to transform the family’s unused third bedroom into a nursery for their new addition. After many coats of paint and a lot of hard work, the space has been transformed into a bright and airy oasis for their beautiful baby boy. I think my favorite part is the pop of color in the small nook above the crib – it went from being the biggest eyesore of the space to its greatest asset.

Raise the Roof: Kids’ Loft Bed Inspiration
When I was in college, my roommate and I got a loft bed system, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. For small spaces, a loft can be a great way to open up floor space, but even if you don’t feel you need the extra room, a loft can be a great hideaway for a kid.

Before & After: Catch-All Basement Corner to Cool Kids’ Craft Corner
I think many of us can relate to those catch-all corners of our rooms that we know can be improved in both form and function. Melissa from 5 foot 12 Creations had a vision for her catch-all basement corner: a special space where her children could access art and craft supplies, a charming space where the markers are many and the paper is plentiful. The perfect pint-sized craft corner! I can only imagine the hours of creating that are now spent here.

How to Make a Cloud Nursery Mobile
I’ve had this idea for a cloud mobile tutorial for months now, but there was always something more pressing to do (I should clarify that, in most cases, neither the mobile nor the more pressing matter was accomplished). This was actually a very easy little project, I’m surprised to say. You never know, when you delve into something new, whether it will go as planned or end up in the unfinished pile in the corner of the closet (along with the partially knitted baby blanket).

Gender Neutral Color Case Study: Green
Personally, I couldn’t wait to find out if I was having a baby boy or a baby girl, but plenty of parents prefer the surprise. However, few parents want to wait until after the delivery to put a nursery together. If you plan on painting your walls, this might leave you with a conundrum – what color? Today we’re just going to look at just one color – green – and see how it works, with different accent colors, in both boys and girls rooms.

Kids usually get the smallest bedrooms in the house, often lacking a closet, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a functional, organized faux-closet. Above are 15 examples to explore.

Before & After: A Shared Parisian Bedroom Gets a Sophisticated Makeover
Two sisters in Paris used to share this space and it is a pretty cute “before” space. The little house bed was a DIY project and the prevalence of pink was offset by the white walls and sunlight. With the youngest sister out of a crib, it was time to redesign and, just their luck, their aunt is super style savvy and loves to take on decorating projects. With paint, wallpaper and several re-imagined thrift store purchases, she turned their new room into a soft, elegant haven.

This “Small Space Nursery Triumph” is tiny, but the mix of patterns lends it lots of personality and the soothing sage green and carrot orange are balanced by the neutral greys and whites. 2.

Sienna’s Graphic Girly Nursery
Name: Sienna Location: Los Angeles, CA Room Size: 13’x12′ The first time I laid eyes on Sienna’s nursery, I was blown away. Jen Campbell, editor of Green Wedding Shoes, wanted a girly nursery that was still modern and fresh. To achieve the look she paired bold, graphic designs with a soft color palette and added a dash of sparkle. The result is a stunning space for her new baby girl. Her itty-bitty room barely fit a crib and a small play area and I was very curious how her room would transform as she grew older.

Martina and Lola’s Sweet Shared Space
Name: Martina & Lola Location: Madrid, Spain Room Size: 49 square feet When Bea first saw her home, she fell in love with this room – the biggest in the house – and decided to give it to her daughters Martina and Lola. She had always dreamt of a big and bright room for them, and set about filling it with the things they loved – festive garlands on the ceiling, a little seating area for reading bedtime stories, and a lovely light-filled art corner.
