The essence of so many makeovers and home renos are DIY projects. They allow you to have control over the exact look you want and give you so much satisfaction once they come together. But when it comes to sourcing the right supplies for those projects, there are always some unique home goods that seem like they’d be easy to find, but end up proving difficult. One of those items? Wine crates.

Gary and his wife inherited this piece and hated it. They wrote in to ask readers for advice on how two “unskilled and not creative” types could rehab this behemoth into something they’d be happy to have in their home. It’s been two years since readers gave Laura advice about increasing the curb appeal of her rental property and she’s back with an update. Her plan was to make the lawn healthier and add some shrubs. She was also considering painting the shutters or siding and asked readers to help decide what color might go nicely with the yellow. Q: My husband and I have just purchased our first house, and we are very excited to finally have a space in our basement to dedicate to music. As a musician, he frequently brings guitars, amps, and other large equipment back and forth to gigs and rehearsals. In the past, he has rented practice spaces, which are always covered in gouges on the walls, corners, and doors—an inevitable cost of musicians constantly hauling large heavy things.

Q: I need your help. I live in a 50s ranch house, which overall I love. However, the creaky floors are driving me crazy, especially because I have a toddler who is a light sleeper who on occasion WAKES UP because I happened to walk by his bedroom. We don’t want to have to rip up the floors and put in new flooring because the hardwood itself is in good condition. Is there a way to fix this or make the creaking less noisy without such a drastic overhaul?

Q: I live on the sixth floor of an eight floor apartment building. My bedroom is sandwiched between two pipe locations – on one wall, the bathroom pipes for the two units directly above mine. On the other wall, the pipes for the neighboring unit, and their two upstairs neighbors. The way the room is set up with doors, windows and a radiator, the only places for my bed are on those pipe walls – and the best place is by the neighbor-wall.

Q: I Have just moved in to a new home and would love to change the kitchen but do not have the budget for it just now. I have been reading lots about contact paper and self adhesive vinyls but I’m not sure whether this would work on my cupboards because of their uneven surface? Also, has anybody used it on their work surface to great success? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Q: The ceiling in my stairwell to the basement rises the full height of the house. From the bottom landing to the ceiling is probably more than 20 feet, and the corners up there are getting heavy with cobwebs. How on earth can I clean up there? My largest extending tool only goes to six feet. I’m 5’3″!

Q: Hey peeps! So, I have very old, textured walls, as if sand was mixed in the wall paint… like a “popcorn” ceiling-like texture. I had put up a large (expensive) mural with double-sided tape, THEN velco-tabs, and even screws and they all failed to keep it up there! I imagine those Command wall strips would react the same way… I am considering using black electrical tape, hanging posters with that tape to resemble a black frame.
