I’ve been having a bear of a time finding a set of side tables that fit next to my couch and don’t look terrible. I also love a good DIY project — especially one that can be finished over a weekend — so I was pretty excited to see this cool set of DIY side tables made from IKEA cutting boards and plumbing pipes.

One of the fastest ways to update an existing table (either changing the look or the function) is to put new legs on it. After some brainstorming, she came up with a cheap solution that: a) met the need for an accent table and b) mimicked the look of woven rope. When Connie found this coffee table at a thrift store, it was in pieces and the tabletop, meant to open to accommodate a leaf, was nailed shut. Though this bulky wooden piece had seen better days, it was clearly a sturdy table with a lot of life left in it — it just needed a little love and attention.Connie wanted to highlight the routed detail of the table so she used putty to fill in the split down the center to create a solid base.

Victoria’s bathroom needed storage— namely a perfectly sized table on which to keep frequently-used stuff handy, and off the sink counter. She got what she needed in the form of an antique medical table found in the basement of an estate sale, and priced at a whopping ten dollars. The original enamel paint was in bad shape and flaking off in big sections. Victoria took to it with a wire brush, then eventually a power grinder.

Ick. Even for the most intrepid DIY folks, this old metal cabinet is daunting. It is rusty, peeling, and no doubt has some sharp edges on it somewhere. I was at an estate sale a couple of years ago and spotted this Saarinen tulip table in the driveway, marked for 5 bucks. The base is in really good shape, but the once beautiful top had met its match in the form of rain, and is weathered, splintered, warped and unsalvageable. (The original Knoll label underneath, however, is still intact.) I’ve kept an eye out for replacement tops but, as of yet, none have crossed my path.

The MELLTORP is one of IKEA’s ubiquitous and affordable tables. It’s minimal and modern, but it also makes a great blank canvas for a DIY. Here’s how Tiphaine of Kraft & Carat transformed it. This is extremely cool, and the way the table now matches the chairs is uncanny; choosing colors that close to each other often leads to awkward almost-matching, but this looks perfect.

Sarah bought this table without seeing it in person. Though it was in rough shape and under decades of paint, she discovered something lovely when she stripped it: From Sarah: I’d been looking for a furniture makeover project for a while, and I found this beat up, dirty little end table on a local trash and treasure website. The photo of it was dim, and the table was covered in grime and a mound office supplies.

Claire scored a deal on a pair of campaign nightstands, that, despite the brass being in good shape, could use some refinishing. She didn’t really need the bedroom storage, so she put them to use in the living room: From Claire: I came across these two nightstands in a booth at the Mission Antique Mall in Prairie Village, Kansas. The booth’s owner was there and she gave me a great deal on the set (less than $150).

Dark and old, this TV tray was less than inspiring, but DeaAnna saw potential in it, and bought it for only $8. It was a small afternoon project with only a few materials, but the result is impressive and affordable! From DeaAnna: Who doesn’t love a great garage sale? It’s one of my guilty pleasures, so when I came across this TV tray at my neighbor’s house for $8, I snatched it up with visions of greatness (lofty, I know).

Silver metallic furniture pieces have been on the scene for a while now and don’t seem to be heading out anytime soon. Mandi wanted to try her hand at creating one without a trusty silver spray can in hand but using a common kitchen goods instead. See what she pulled off after the jump…At first I was skeptical, but by the end of her tutorial I was thoroughly impressed. She didn’t just glue on some tin foil and call it a day (which probably wouldn’t do the trick).

Ashley picked this table up at a thrift store for only $10, a great deal for a piece with this much hidden storage. Despite the obvious benefits of such a table for a growing family, the look of the piece is dated and too dark for Ashley’s plan to brighten up her living room. Though this project required a lot of time and attention to detail, the end result is a great addition to Ashley’s evolving living room.

Jonathan Lo, who is no stranger to DIY, interior design, and making things beautiful, is at it again with these painted nightstands. As an addition to his handmade (of course) headboard, he wanted a sleek pair of end tables to contrast the weathered look of the bed. I think he achieved his goal…This crisp and classic navy blue adds such a handsome appeal to these nightstands. Often folks will cringe at the thought of painting any wood, whatsoever.
