A few years later and two hours up I-35, Loloi Rugs opened in Dallas with the humble vision of designing the world’s most original rugs.

Match Point: 7 Rooms Proving Tone-on-Tone Color Works
Why mix colors when just one will do? It might fly in the face of typical interior design advice, which advocates balance above all things, but sometimes a room that fully embraces a single color can be strangely delightful. Layering the same color in different shades—or a handful of colors in very similar hues—can create a rich, immersive design experience that’s as stylish as it is unexpected.

A Brooklyn Apartment With a Drool-Worthy Backyard
Name: Rachel & Russell Location: Boerum Hill —Brooklyn, New York We’ve lived in our amazing apartment in Brooklyn for almost 3 years now. I spent countless hours arranging a mix of purchased, made (e.g. the RIOT painting and wood/metal plant stand), and found (e.g. our vintage typewriter and metal stool) objects into the decor we live with today. Of course there are things I wish I had done differently, but overall I think I did a great job maximizing the beauty of our space.

And as a reward she got to live out our collective dream of ripping up carpet to discover beautiful hardwood floors. From Johanna: Growing up moving every three years made it difficult for me to find a place where I felt I could settle down.

Survey Says: Rent is So Expensive, Lots of People are Paying to Sleep in Living Rooms
If you’re reading this from New York City or Boston or San Francisco (or really anywhere!), I don’t have to tell you: the rent is too damn high. (It’s an old meme, but it checks out because it’s still too damn true.) Wages aren’t keeping up with the cost of living, and housing in metro areas is getting prohibitively expensive. “Prohibitively” expensive?

IKEA’s New Black Kitchen Cabinets Are Literally Garbage
IKEA’s new cabinets are literally garbage. Kungsbacka, the Swedish furniture retailer’s latest line of kitchen cabinets, is made from reclaimed industrial wood and recycled plastic bottles. IKEA collaborated with Swedish design studio Form Us With Love to create a sleek collection of anthracite cabinets with a matte finish (you know we love a black kitchen!). Each 15.75-by-31.5-inch cabinet uses 25 plastic bottles.

Before & After: An Outdated Bathroom Gets a Stylish Makeover & a Door (Yes, a Door)
Jennifer’s pink tile bathroom was a little outdated aesthetically, but more urgently, it lacked function. Like, didn’t have a door, lacked function. For under $3k Jennifer and her husband were able to add style and useability to the space. From Jenn: Our 1961 ranch only has two bathrooms, one of which was this sad pink nightmare. We’d spent six years in a pink bathroom in our previous apartment and 12 with another pink bathroom in this, our first house.

Before & After: A Bright & Bold Wall
When Mila grew tired of her gallery wall she opted for a big and bold change. Part accent wall, part large scale art piece and entirely fabulous, her vibrant mural is an eye catching delight. From Mila: This wall of my living room needed major help. I was bored of that gallery wall and wanted to try something new, exotic and attention grabbing. This mural was inspired by Robert Murle Marx’s textiles. Florence Lopez, a designer that lives in Paris, had a similar idea for her apartment.

Survey Reveals That People Want Bigger Homes—Except in this One Country

Sure, that motorized monstrosity known as the Hummer is no longer in production, and McMansions have fallen out of favor in recent years as tiny homes tickle our imaginations. But according to a new survey, in much of America, size still matters—and big isn’t big enough.

Everything You Need to Know About Biedermeier Style
More than a century before the Eameses created their simple, honest furniture designed to appeal to the everyman, a style of furnishings emerged in Germany, one whose simplicity, visual lightness, and playful geometries were a herald of things to come. Biedermeier is notable for being the first decorative movement that was created by and for the middle class, and even today, after two centuries, these pieces still feel surprisingly fresh and modern.

Supergraphics: Is this OTT ’70s Design Trend Making a Comeback?
One of the perks of having a mother who was very into both garage sales and interior design was growing up in a house filled with wacky old design books from the 1960s and ’70s. In their pages, I was exposed to many strange and wonderful things, not least among them supergraphics, the crazy stripes and arcs and rainbows that covered every surface of a room, irrespective of walls or floors or furniture.
