Before & After: A Faux Wood Cabinet Gets the Midas Touch
We’ve all seen them before: those sort of faux-wood furniture pieces that aren’t exactly screaming style but could still function in your space if you need it. Instead of letting this piece stay dark and sad, Cassie gave it the Midas touch for a cabinet that now exudes sophistication. From Cassie: These faux wood cabinets were in need of a makeover that would take them out of the realm of 1970 office furniture.

Abby’s Dose of DIY in DC

Lauren’s 500 Square Foot, 5th Floor West Village Walk-Up Studio
Name: Lauren Location: West Village, New York City I’ve been living in my 500 square foot, 5th floor walk-up studio in the West Village for about a year now. I moved approximately seven blocks south from another West Village place. The neighborhood feels like a dynamite grown-up version of Sesame Street to me where everyone knows everyone, which is a huge rarity in New York. I couldn’t possibly move out of the ‘hood!

Before & After: A Boring Office Chair Blooms With Bold Fabric
These office chairs were functional — but certainly not very motivating with their boring upholstery color and bland gray frame color. It’s hard to imagine how these could be made more interesting, but Vicky had plans. And the result is a much more beautiful and productive result! From Vicky: Sometimes you have to buy a used office chair for $20 so you can get working in your new home office. Eventually, the drab fabric with questionable stains on it starts to wear on you.

Erika’s Seattle Craftsman
Name: Erika Stanley Location: Seattle, Washington My husband, six kids, and our yorkie live in a 2000 square foot, 1909 Craftsman in Seattle. My parents bought this house when my firstborn was a baby. It had brown shag carpet, walls dripping with nicotine, the original kitchen, electrical and plumbing. My parents were new to town and thought it was way over-priced. I begged and convinced them to buy it with the secret hope of one day owning it myself.

Before & After: An Affordable Mid-Century Modern Couch Makeover
Many of us love the look of authentic mid-century modern sofas and furniture but not all of us can afford their sometimes steep price tags. So when Natalie got this couch for free, she loved the shape, but wanted to show off the lines with a more modern fabric. From Natalie: After recently moving into a new place, I was on the hunt for a new couch. I’ve been in love with the mid-century style for awhile now but the ones I had been looking at were $2000+. Not ideal for a 23-year-old.

Before & After: A Living Room Gets Lighter, Brighter (& Now Looks) Bigger!
Anna and her fiancé were like many couples who are just starting out: their first home was full of mismatched hand-me-downs. Before & After: A TV Tray Gets a Fresh New Life for Only $21

It was a small afternoon project with only a few materials, but the result is impressive and affordable! From DeaAnna: Who doesn’t love a great garage sale? It’s one of my guilty pleasures, so when I came across this TV tray at my neighbor’s house for $8, I snatched it up with visions of greatness (lofty, I know).

Before & After: A Kitchen Nook Gets a Creative & Clever DIY Makeover!
It’s not that Pauline was ungrateful for her kitchen nook — it was a convenient corner with a desktop that could be a great place to do work. It’s just that it didn’t fit her needs (or aesthetics). So she came up with a plan to mold it to be a space she could use, came across some surprises while tearing out the old stuff, and got clever to finish out what turned into a very creative corner! Bonus: There’s inspiration (and a link to instructions) for DIY art inside!

Derrick’s Organized Downtown Los Angeles Loft

Before & After: A Cold, Compact Kitchen Gets Cheery With Color!
Jenny describes the “before” of her compact kitchen best: it was safe. White walls, white cabinets. Not a lot of color, accessories, style or windows. It gave off about as much charm as a doctor’s office. So she decided to add color — but in a practical way. She’d keep the black floor tiles that hide dirt, but add a cheery pop of color in an unexpected place, and throw in some efficient storage ideas for good measure.

Cara could have given up when tasked with turning this space into a dining room, but she persevered. And the result is a bright delight! From Cara: There is no question that it took a bit of vision and a large leap of faith to see the potential in our dining room. Paneling, old carpet, dated light fixtures.

Before & After: From TV Armoire to Built-in Banquette Bench
Christina’s TV cabinet wasn’t looking so hot anymore. Ten years old, she had tried to sell it on Craigslist twice, without even one bite. While dark wood walls certainly have their place in the homes of certain styles, in this dutch colonial Kelly’s renovating, it wasn’t quite the desired look. Before & After: An Upholstered Stool Gets Stylish with Hand-Stamped Fabric
It might be just a small stool, but this little piece of furniture turned out to be an inspiring project to tackle for Katie, who took her time finding the right new finish and then designing and implementing a fun, hand-stamped pattern for new upholstery! From Katie: I was hoping that the wood under the paint would be salvageable. Rather than using a chemical paint stripper – the last time I tried it ended with disastrous results – I decided to sand off the black paint.
