Top Travel Guides: Lonely Planet, Rick Steves & More
We’ve spent a good part of April bringing you travel tips and tricks, and I hope you’ve been inspired to plan a little get-away! With the internet, planning a trip seems almost too easy, no travel agents needed, apps that send you flight deals, you don’t even need a map when you get there anymore. But I still think you can get a lot of value out of guidebooks, especially for big trips.

Win: The Handsome, Statement-Making Maxwell Double-Chaise Sectional
Prize: The Maxwell Double-Chaise U-Sectional Total Value: $3,200 From: Interior Define Doesn’t that look like the most delicious sofa in the world? I got this pic of the new Maxwell Double Chaise last month and my jaw dropped. While I’m super proud of the Maxwell design, I had no idea it could be transformed into this giant icon by the Interior Define team. This whole chaise and double-chaise thing is new to me, but I would build a living room around this if I could.

I first saw Color Cord Company a few years back at ICFF, but this year they are back with so much more.

I’m going to show you how my new home gets built – step by step. Chapter Seven is here. This is Chapter eight. I last reported to you on the very last day of March, so it’s been exactly three months, during which time a few difficult problems, including rain, slowed down the final push.

Decluttering Emotional Attachments: Should I Keep My Mother’s Paintings?
Q: I was wondering whether you would kindly give me some advice. I’m sure my problem is common to many people, and yet it is not really addressed on the internet anywhere. My problem is that after my mum died two years ago, I, as only child, had to deal with all her stuff (most of it I have donated). However I am confused emotionally about her framed finished paintings she did – I haven’t been able to get rid of them although I don’t think I want them.

Wow, Floo Powder is Real! Nucleus Has Created A Live Intercom That Can Connect You To Upstairs Or The Other Side of the World
Here’s my favorite new home gadget of 2017 so far. When Jonathan Frankel, the CEO and Founder of Nucleus, came to our offices here in NYC to show me his new home intercom system, I was immediately impressed. His inspiration was clear and simple, he wanted an affordable, easy to use home intercom to connect him to his three kids, whether he was downstairs or at the office.

Comment away!Name: Polly E.Location: GeorgetownSize: 580 sq feetYears Lived In: 2 >> We’ve always loved Pomander Walk, a secret alley of tiny, pastel-colored rowhouses in Georgetown. But even in our fantasies, it seems impossible to imagine where everything would fit. So we were delighted when Polly invited us into her 11-foot-wide, two-bedroom house.

Wallpaper Was the Answer to Maxwell’s Makeover of Two Guest Rooms
I’ve covered kitchen/dining room as well as the entrance/living room, so now we’re going to stroll down the hall on the main floor and visit the two guest rooms down at the other end. There is also a bathroom in between. These rooms sit exactly in the same position as the old house, because I loved the layout. They are easy to get to, but private with their doors at the far end of the hall.

Makers Spotlight: The Crafter’s Box
I can’t remember how I first heard about Morgan Spenla and the company she’d started just a few years ago, The Crafter’s Box, but something made me stop, check out the site and call her up to find out what she was doing. What she was doing was building a company in her hometown of San Diego around a personal passion and a professional belief that crafting is a true antidote for our web addled world.

Boston House Tour: Kyle’s Jamaica Plain Gem
This is from our Boston finalist, Kyle. Comment away!Name: KyleLocation: Jamaica Plain, MASize: 1000 sfOwn/Rent: Own >> I’ve been a serial room-rearranger since I was old enough to wobble. I’m not talking about a few times a year or even once a month. My home can look radically different from week to week. My dog used to get startled when he noticed that he was dozing on a couch that was moving from one side of the room to the other.

Maxwell & Lulu’s Temporary Digs
Name: Maxwell Ryan and daughter, Ursula (aka Lulu)Location: Soho, NYCSize: 480 s/fYears lived in: 1 year rented Just over a year ago, when my marriage ended, I moved here. Despite being overwhelmed by the unexpected turn of events, it seemed like the right thing to do for both of us. I quickly found this apartment only a few blocks away, waited while it was finished and then set about making a new home for myself and our daughter, who is with me half of the time now.

A Living Room That’s Actually Livable! Check Out Part 2 of Maxwell’s Home Reveal
In this second of the final series of posts showing off my completed home, I want to go in depth and share with you all I can – everything that went into this living room – a practice which is so important to our website. My whole house was copied, inspired and pulled from a thousand different ideas that I’d seen over the years and I would love it if this could have the same impact on others.

Here’s Your Chance to See Maxwell’s Dream House Finished (Before It Gets Messy)
Back in the early spring of 2016 I tore down a little house my family had purchased 18 years earlier and, taking it on as finally my own and with money that I inherited when my father passed away, I rebuilt it from the ground up (actually below the ground, up) with the help of three wonderfully skilled people, John Berg (architect), Peter Germano (contractor) and Rebecca Robertson (interior designer). The project took nearly two years, allowing me to move in by Christmas 2018.

Best Ergonomic Stools
I recently made the switch to an adjustable standing desk in my office, and it has made a world of difference. That said, I soon realized that my regular desk chair just wasn’t going to cut it anymore. With a more active desk I needed a more active seating option — and it turns out that the medical community agrees. Active seating — specifically ergonomic stools — helps to strengthen core and back muscles, while allowing the spine to achieve its natural curve.

Meet My Two Favorite Lunch Buddies: Prepd and Monbento
Lunch monotony is real and we know it all too well. You were excited to have prepped a lunch the night before, but those leftovers look kind of sad and boring now that noon is rolling around and your stomach is grumbling. Today I’ve got two bento boxes that are total lunch gamechangers: Prepd Pack and Monbento. They’re super functional (compact, wash easily, no leaks) and super cute.

Talk Trash With Me! The New Voice Sensor Trashcan from Simplehuman
I love to buy and test trashcans. I’ve owned many and tried many others. I am a big fan of the classic, no-tech Rubbermaid cans, but those you have to hide. If you want something more accessible and pretty, you move to a different class. My latest tryout is with simplehuman’s brand new sensor can which as motion AND now — get this — voice control. Move over Alexa!

Stand Down, Standing Desks: You Have Met Your Match
Walk into any modern office today and you’re bound to spot at least one standing desk somewhere — they are all the rage in home and corporate offices alike. Somewhere along the way The Edge Desk got thrown into the mix, though it is surely in a league of its own when it comes to unconventional desks: it’s the world’s first all-in-one desk, easel, and chair, completely designed for a kneeling posture.

Happy Fourth of July from Maxwell @ Apartment Therapy!
Waking this morning and walking across the Manhattan Bridge to the office, it was remarkable how quiet the city is. It is a particularly unique thing to have a peaceful day in New York City, so I’m savoring it and using it to bring back something we haven’t done in years: wishing you a happy holiday. When our sites began in 2004, we used to start an open thread after linking to some good thoughts by others on each national holiday.

There’s nothing quite like a backpack when you’re traveling, and while any loyal Apartment Therapy reader knows that we simply LOVE to talk about luggage, there’s a new kid on the block. Today I’m excited to share Bobby, which I first saw at the New York Now show a few months ago.

The Kitchen Gadget That Sold Me on Kitchen Gadgets
I love gadgets, but not usually in the kitchen. Kitchen gadgets are often fads that come and go. Everything I find, however, comes with a good recommendation and this one came from a friend in LA, who emailed me with this crazy happy recommendation: “Maxwell! This thing is so exciting to use and it makes chopping so fun. I use mine almost every day.” Was she being paid to tell me this? Turns out, no — she genuinely loves this thing. So I got one and checked it out.

The Art of Living: Life Lessons from an 88-Year-Old Ballet Teacher
I’ve always believed that homes need good design to support a good life, but the greatest design of all is the design of a life itself. Visiting my aunt Sheila last year in Santa Fe, New Mexico, I was stunned watching her teach for the first time and shocked to realize that in my whole life of knowing her, I’d never really known this side of her as Ms. Rozann, master ballet teacher.

How To Prepare for Monthly & Quarterly Reports
Accurate and timely reporting is the lifeblood of any growing, successful organization, and the larger it gets the more and more important reporting becomes. Imagine steering a nuclear submarine without knowing the depth of the sea you’re in or buying stock for a large department store without knowing what’s selling on the showroom floor? Reporting is also a necessity in any Build-Measure-Learn feedback loop.

Travel Time Capsule: Two Single Moms Make a Getaway to the Dirty Dancing Resort
In the mid 1970s my mother and her best friend, Emily, took me, my brother, and Emily’s daughter on vacation. They were two single moms exploring the world and trying to find a relaxing vacation with restless children. Years later, I discovered that Emily wrote down the events of the trip and I LOVED it. Below is her lighthearted account of what it was like to visit Grossingers, an iconic Catskills retreat for decades, catering to Jewish clientele from New York City.

Before & After: Annikki’s Living Room Brightener
I know Annikki personally, so I was particularly excited when I found out that she and her husband were not only expecting a baby, they were also figuring out ways to get their new home ready despite their old furniture. Of big concern was the living room, where their “gloomy” seal brown leather wanted an upgrade. With one stroke, they needed to transform this room.
