Name: Vanessa Matsalla Location: Carlsbad, California You had a look at designer Vanessa Matsalla’s California home earlier this week; it’s got cool Cali vibes, earthy textures and a lot of natural light. Her showroom in Carlsbad, California also serves as the office of her full-service interior design practice. Though a small space, it complements the look of her home, while giving off its own specific style vibes.

Name: Mary MacGill Location: Block Island, Rhode Island Years lived in: Owned 12 years Mary MacGill’s jewelry is ethereal—semi-precious stones in subtle colors mix with structured metal like gold. It’s hard not to see that aesthetic mirrored in the studio she creates her work in, in Block Island, Rhode Island. Elegant minimalism, bright white, natural textures and rich materials make this a calming and creative space.

Emily doesn’t have a ton of space in her Fort Greene studio apartment (just 400 square feet), but her eclectic mix of decor—vintage and new—creates an elegant mix of style that makes her home feel much larger than it is. The sweet architectural details (that fireplace!) don’t hurt either.

Engineered by architects, using a lot of sleek materials, this exact renovation might be out of reach for some, but it’s still filled with tons of ideas you can steal to make a small home work (and look) so much better.

Full of boldly colored walls, fun furniture, and vibrant accessories, these 13 homes are bursting with vivid hues in bold ways. They just might inspire you to do some painting in the new year. This home is practically a playground of color and pattern, spearheaded by a budding interior designer. DIY projects abound in this beautifully modern home, but what caught my eye the most was the inventive use of color.

Name: Red Rescue Retreat Location: Lake District, United Kingdom I think it’s accurate to say I’m slightly obsessed with things that aren’t homes being converted into a homes. That’s why you’ve seen everything from a former prison bus turned mobile home, to a converted van, to a school bus turned tiny home featured on Apartment Therapy. I’m very happy to share a first for the site: a converted former fire truck.

Scandinavian and Nordic-inspired interiors are very good at very white, bright interiors, but they also do dark, moody spaces well, too.

Name: Kachet Jackson-Henderson Location: Sacramento, California Size: 450 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting As a creative consultant, the writer at The Kachet Life, and the founder of The Blog Bloc, Kachet Jackson-Henderson needs a home where she can live, unwind, and work in. Though only 450 square feet, this Sacramento studio apartment is just the space.

Name: Emily V Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani, and cat, Bagel Location: Los Angeles, California Size: 1,400 square feet Years lived in: 3 years, owned When the writer, podcast host, and all-around talented Emily V. Gordon posted on Instagram about the newly remodeled house she shares with her husband—equally talented actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani—I knew I needed to see more.

Name: Ben and Meag Poirier (and Moose, our dog—he’s a Staffordshire terrier mix rescue from Georgia. He’s 3 ½ years old. We adopted him when he was 3 ½ months old.) Location: White Mountains of New Hampshire in the summer; Southwestern U.S. in the winter and everywhere else in between. Size: 165 square feet Years lived in: 1 year full time. 3 years since we began the bus conversion project, owned.

Name: Ms. Pink and Mr. Black, two out of their three sons, and three cats Location: London, England Size: 1,350 square feet Years lived in: 16 years, owned When I asked Ms. Pink if I could feature her home on Apartment Therapy, she seemed almost apologetic that she didn’t have photos of every room of the 1,350-square-foot split level flat in a Victorian house she shares with her partner Mr. Black, two of their three sons, and three cats.

Name: Nora McInerny, her husband, four kids, and dog Stacy Location: Golden Valley, Minnesota Size: 3,500 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned There’s no lack of information on the internet about writer, speaker, wife, and mom Nora McInerny‘s life and work. The obituary she and her first husband Aaron wrote before he died went viral, and she’s since written a book, “It’s Okay to Laugh (Crying Is Cool Too),” as well as beautiful articles.

Name: Janet Varney, her boyfriend Brandon, and dogs Scott and Whitley. Location: Hollywood Hills — Los Angeles, California Size: 1,000 square feet Years lived in: 14 years, owned Colorful with patterns and textures, actress Janet Varney‘s home is also airy and relaxing…surely a much-needed respite from her busy career. She was the voice of Korra in the animated television series “The Legend of Korra.

Name: Michaela Grut and family Location: Lidingö — Stockholm, Sweden Size: 1,936 square feet Years lived in: 4 years, owned Michaela Grut comes from a creative family—there have been artists in several generations of her history. So it comes as no surprise that she’s found herself in a career that stretches her artistic muscles.

Name: Annabel Joy, her husband (Kean Duffey), and their French bulldog (Mona) Location: Boston, Massachusetts Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: 3 years, owned Your eyes don’t deceive you: This is a SECOND house call of the same home. But, it appears that the first post’s headline (A DIY Designer & Chronic Rearranger’s Boston Condo) was particularly appropriate, for Annabel has submitted some more photos and the space already looks pretty different.

Name: Andrew Cohen and family Location: Woodstock, New York Size: 2,100 square feet Years lived in: 5 years, owned This four-bedroom, two-bathroom house with a finished basement and two-car garage on 1.3 acres in New York belongs to Parts and Labor Design co-founder, Andrew Cohen. And it just might be the best mix of modern meet cabin vibes that you’ll ever see.

Name: Clayton Brant, husband Keith and two little boys, Fischer and Ford Location: Carlisle, Pennsylvania Size: 2022 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned We found a four-acre property right outside of town with beautiful trees in a very quiet neighborhood, and built a house on a very strict budget. We were committed to keeping our footprint relatively small (around 2,000 square feet), so we designed the interior of the house to use space very efficiently and functionally.

Name: Jamie Nuccio, my cat, Ruby Location: West Loop — Chicago, Illinois Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned As soon as I walked into this space, I had a strong gut feeling that it was “the one” (it was only the second place that I toured when I started my condo search!).

Name: Lita Lee, Mike Martin and their four children Location: Edmonton, Alberta Size: 2,550 square feet Years lived in: 4 years, owned Lita Lee claims to be “just a girl who decided to go for it.” And the it she went for was taking a large spec home from a blank slate to a bold, bright home that’s the perfect fit for her family. This 10-month rental home is a prime example,” shares Jewel Marlowe, blogger, interior stylist, and frequent customizer of rental homes.
