Leemkuil Location: Sunnyside, NY Size: 530 square feet Years lived in: 5 years, renting “One would assume, by all appearances, that I’m a maximalist,” writes interior designer Brett Leemkuil. His 500-square-foot Queens rental apartment features a floor-to-ceiling red living room, a curtained-off leopard-print bed closet, and hand-painted emerald green malachite wall finishes in the entryway… among much more. Maximalist seems like a very accurate descriptor.

Philadelphia-based designer and illustrator Alisa Wismer has discovered the perfect living and working setup for where’s she’s at in her career. “I actually live at home (you’re thinking, ‘Typical millennial,’ right?), but it makes sense for where I’m at right now,” she says. “My parents have been super supportive in my decision to work for myself while I try to build my own business up.

This 1930s house in Austin may no longer be a home, but I sure want to live here. A former barber shop, and before that (presumably) a regular old house, this building has recently been transformed into the Cute Nail Studio, a business opened with the idea to “create a place that celebrates artistry and provides an all-inclusive safe space for beauty treatments.

If you were (like me) delighted by the dark and dramatic UK home of Nicola Broughton we toured last spring, prepare to be doubly delighted. Because while the home we got a look at in her house tour certainly came close to decor perfection, Nicola has recently revamped some of the rooms—making her vintage-filled home even moodier and lovelier than before.
