I have been collecting rugs, art, pillow cushions, and decor for years on my many international trips that have taken me to places on all seven continents. I have been most influenced by Moroccan, Turkish, and Mexican textiles; and Southern African, Korean, and Argentinean artwork.

Name: Kelly Jackson, my husband Drew, my two kids (Lucy, 2, and Dylan, 5), and our low rider dog Walter, who also has a beard! Location: Grant Park Neighborhood — Atlanta, Georgia Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned Our house is located in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. It’s a really beautiful community that is surrounded by craftsman and Victorian style homes. Our home was built in 1890 by the Buchanan family.

She and her husband Esteban had waited a couple of years to buy the perfect house for their little family, and this one had every single detail they wanted!

Name: Sarah B. I enjoy my house because it is perfect for entertaining with two French doors that open to a large patio in the back, and kitchen/dining/living room areas that flow seamlessly into one another.

When I looked for an apartment, the first thing on my list was light, lots and lots of light. This apartment faces Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg and I have a corner unit.

We have a large family and had quickly outgrown our starter home and this neighborhood and home were so far out of anything we ever thought we could have. I was half seriously looking at homes in the area for sale and this one came up.

Name: Sue Prue Location: Berkeley, California Size: 270 square feet Years lived in: 3 weeks, owned My boyfriend and I had been talking about moving in together since we met. His home, however, is small—and we needed more space to accommodate all of our things. Since he already owned a house we decided the easiest thing would be to fix up his dilapidated garage in Berkeley. It was during this process (and after finding one too many rats) we decided the garage was ultimately a tear-down.

Name: Nikki Darling, my three cats and dog! Location: Highland Park — Los Angeles, California Size: 450 square feet Years lived in: 10 years, renting I moved into my home in 2008 to attend Cal Arts. I had lived in New York previously since 2002 where I went to undergrad and stayed afterward. I lived in a punk dump with a rotating list of roommates and pets. I wanted to live alone in my own home. I found this back house with a yard in my budget and haven’t left since.

They emphasized flow and perception of space over actual square footage, and tried to design the home to perfectly match their lifestyle and habits.

Name: Vanessa Combe, my partner Blake, and our cat Marlon Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Size: 500 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, renting Apartment hunting in Toronto is a miserable affair. The city gets more expensive every year and the lack of housing—especially affordable housing—means that everyone is fighting tooth and nail for a place to call home.

Name: Pratiksha Tandon, husband, and 17-month-old daughter Location: Foster City, California Size: 1,350 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting I am an architect and an interior designer married to a data scientist currently living in the Bay Area, California. We saw the bus standing on the street on our way to grab a coffee and bought it one day later without knowing anything about US school buses. In Germany you rarely find buses like that and the size is perfect for traveling Europe.

Name: Annie Robertson, husband, two sons (ages 4 and 7) Location: Portland, Oregon Size: 250 square feet Years lived in: 2 months, owned We are in the planning and permitting process of building a house from scratch, and our family faced an unexpected job loss. Rather than give up our lot and move out of inner Portland, where housing costs are ever-rising and we would be hard pressed to get into again, we decided to remodel a two-bedroom fifth wheel trailer! We are stationary on our lot.

I would describe it as a cozy cottage. It was built in 1977 and has so many cool “older” quirks that won me over instantly. I am drawn to earth-toned colors and pretty textures and patterns.

It features gorgeous ornate original high ceilings and many of the historical features have been preserved. When we bought it late 2017, it needed a bit of love and some extra space. The kitchen was tiny and the second floor was not very practical with a pitched roof.

My husband saw the listing within an hour of it being posted, was the first to see the apartment, and made an offer without me even seeing it. He knew it was good and would go fast.

Our very first home purchase, we’ve been here a little over a year. It was a dream home purchase and love at first sight for both of us. I wanted something that felt homey and comfortable, without requiring a ton of maintenance (i.e., no plants that would die if I left them for 10 days. I killed a lot of them experimenting with this before I finally asked my mom for help!

It’s my first (and only) purchased home and I love it to pieces. The location is ideal, it holds all the necessities and it feels like an oasis amidst the hustle and bustle. Inside its four walls lives my dog Jane, my hedgehog Penny, and myself! This is my favorite view of my home.

I looked at a few apartments in big buildings, but they didn’t feel right. I wanted to find something more distinctive in a smaller building and began looking for condos to rent. I almost overlooked the listing for this unit.

Name: Jennifer DeBrincat, my husband, Brett, and our whippet, Jon Location: Everson, Washington Size: 1,032 square feet Years lived in: 24 years, owned I share our home with my husband and our 7-year-old whippet, Jon. We make and sell farmhouse tables and benches. We all need and crave peace and tranquility so I try and decorate with simplicity in mind. The house is ’70s modern architecture and has loads of quirky angles.

Name: Breeana (Bree) Dunbar and son Ari Location: Brunswick East — Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Size: 540 square feet Years lived in: 2 months, renting I moved into this apartment after my son’s father and I separated earlier this year. I found the separation absolutely devastating; it feels like a death and in a way it is. It’s the death of your life as you know it, and the death of the future you imagined for your family.

This duplex is in the Historic Roosevelt District of Downtown Phoenix. I was so excited to come in and show myself what I was capable of designing. The home was built in the 1920s, has original floors, windows, cabinets and bathroom fixtures.

Name: Sarah Lyon and her roommate Carrie Location: Dupont Circle — Washington, DC Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: Almost a year My roommate, Carrie, and I found our place on Craigslist after doing an extensive search of rowhouse apartments in DC. We were about ready to give up when we found what was truly a hidden gem—a place that was affordable, had equal-sized bedrooms and two bathrooms, and even came with a roof deck. We snagged it right away!

We moved here from Manhattan because we wanted more space to grow a family (we’re expecting a baby girl at the end of August!). Everything in the house is brown. My city mouse apartment, then, is the complete opposite. It’s quirky, colorful and bold, with no apologies for its femininity.
