Name: Harben Porter and Ryan Moses and Bowie the cat Location: San Francisco, California Size: 550 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; Rented Harben and Ryan found their apartment on Craigslist and decided to take a chance on a post that did not include any images. Luckily for them, the place looked perfectly charming and quirky on sight.

Name: Joanne O’Callaghan Location: Melbourne, Australia Size: 510 square feet Years owned: 16 years Joanne recently renovated this late-1940s Art Deco apartment in East Melbourne, Australia. The entire place is full of light and charm, but the apartment’s living and dining space, called the “blue room,” is a particular jewel: It features Art Deco cornices, a tiered mirror above the original fireplace and a large framed window.

Name: Jon and Nina Hans of Weekday Studio Location: Downtown Los Angeles, California Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 2 years We first got a peek at Jon and Nina’s home in their house call. It’s a clean, simple sanctuary in a busy Downtown LA area—but it isn’t boring in the slightest. Bold contrasts add drama while design details stand out in a space without a lot in it but that has a lot going for it.

Name: Jungwon Kim, Senior Editorial Manager at Rainforest Alliance, and kids Location: Bedford-Stuyvesant; Brooklyn, NY Size: 2,200 square feet Years lived in: 8 years; Owned Born and raised a stone’s throw from the beach in Southern California, the home of Jungwon and her family is a true reflection of their tidal roots. But having lived in Brooklyn for two decades, she’s infused her home with the creativity, eclecticism and free spirit that is iconic of its Brooklyn habitat.

Name: Tanika and Brian Hochhauser (plus George the turtle and Tansy the dog) Location: Long Island City, New York, New York Size: 650 square feet Years lived in: 6 months You might recognize Tanika and Brian from the Love Videos, where they shared the charming story of how they met (and of their spur-of-the-moment wedding). The home they share is just as charming as they are, a beautiful Long Island City aerie with breathtaking views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the East River.

Name: Ana Kamin, freelance photographer, writer and blogger and Patrick Kamin, software engineer Location: Haight Ashbury — San Francisco, California Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 3.5 years rented When Patrick and I moved from Germany to San Francisco in 2012, we were lucky to find this little gem—an apartment on a rooftop of an old Victorian in Haight Ashbury—just next to Golden Gate Park.

Name: Katy Goodman and Todd Wisenbaker Location: Silver Lake, Los Angeles, California Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 2 years; rented So having 15 guitars may not sound minimal, but I’m convinced indie rockers Katy Goodman and Todd Wisenbaker of the band La Sera are nailing efficient living.

Name: Kristen Basilo and Robby the cat Location: River West, Chicago, Illinois Size: 825 square feet Years lived in: 4 years; owned Kristen Basilo is the owner of Gather Home + Lifestyle and she says that she’s guilty of bringing her favorite items home with her. Most people’s homes would be hopelessly cluttered if they had access to so many beautiful things, but not Kristen. She’s mastered the art of living minimally.

Project by: Casey Location: Chicago, Illinois My husband and I purchased a condo in Chicago nine months ago, and we’ve slowly been working to transform every inch of the 1,200 square foot space. Determined to broaden my DIY skills and try out some new power tools. I vowed to makeover our guest room all by myself. I started by DIY’ing a wood wall treatment to create an accent behind the bed.

The bright and spacious live-work loft utilizes cool and tranquil colors that add an overall warmth to a huge space that can easily feel cold and sterile.

Name: Meg Gustafson Location: Uptown — Chicago, Illinois Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 3 months; rented For a short few months, Meg has lived in this familiar space—a high rise in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, on Lake Shore Drive. The building was built in 1959 and Meg’s grandma lived in this exact unit for years. In 1978, Meg’s parents took over and began renting it out.

Name: Isabel, her husband and her two children Location: Mexico City, Mexico Size: 1830 square feet Years lived in: 4 years This is the bold, globally inspired Mexico City home of Isabel and family. Over the years she’s lived in Tunisia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Washington, DC while serving as a Foreign Service Officer, and has traveled to even more places.

Name: Christina and Thejas; Cats: Oliver and Teddie Location: DUMBO; Brooklyn, New York Size: 1,080 square feet Years lived in: 7 months; Rented When Christina and Thejas were looking for a new apartment last summer, they searched for a place that had luxury amenities, but still had character and charm. What they found was a modern apartment in an old factory building in DUMBO. And with Christina’s flair for accessorizing and adding color, they brought the space to life.

Name: Matt Austin, of Matt Austin Studio Location: Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 5 years Artist and designer Matt Austin’s Brooklyn apartment and studio is maximalist in the best possible way: There’s so much to see, look at and explore, but somehow everything comes together so perfectly and seemingly effortlessly, as if all these fascinating little bits and bobs wanted to be together, in this place, exactly where they are.

Name: Kendall Location: Bellingham, Washington Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 12 years “Maybe I’ll move in next door to you,” I kidded when I found out the tenant in the space next to my sister Kendall’s light-filled, one-bedroom apartment would be moving out in the fall. She laughed,”Oh, there’s a waiting list.” People have been lining up for years to get into this small complex.

Name: Ryan and Amber Flynn Location: Downtown — Fashion District; Los Angeles, California Size: 3,500 square feet Years lived in: 2 years; rented When Ryan and Amber Flynn first moved to Los Angeles in 2011, they spent a month crashing on the floor of their friends’ downtown loft. The space was impressive: a former munitions factory, the loft boasted 20-foot ceilings spanning two industrial stories.

Name: Emmanuelle Messean and Jean Baptiste Mariou Location: Saint-Denis — Paris, France Size: 85 square meters (915 square feet) Years lived in: 5 years Traveling to the North of Paris is filled with architectural delights (like the first medieval basilica), and this trip to the suburban community of Saint Denis to visit Emmanuelle and Jean Baptiste’s home (that’s been converted from a former taxi garage) does not disappoint.

Name: Kathryn Baugher of Up to Date Interiors Location: Okinawa, Japan Size: 1500 square feet Years lived in: 1 year It takes creativity, guts and energy to turn a plain space into something spectacular, and Kathryn’s done it. The home in Okinawa that she shares with her family exudes both serenity and excitement—and those floral covered kitchen cabinets are amazing!

Name: Kristen Ley and pups Willow Scarlet Ley (photographed) and Henry Albert Ley, and cat Norman Location: Jackson, Mississipi Size: 2300 square feet Years lived in: Renting 1.5 years Kristen Ley is the creative mastermind and founder of Thimblepress, a letterpress, stationery and celebration company out of Jackson, Mississippi (perhaps most recognized for their incredibly cheery and colorful Push-Pop Confetti).

Name: Mekiel Nuñez and Saadiq Vaughan Location: Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 1 year The stereotypical New Yorker’s wardrobe consists unapologetically of black, greys, neutrals, and denims. Perhaps the overabundance of visual stimulation in our surroundings is why we prefer our clothes understated.

Name: Maria, Boris, and a dog named Fish Location: Fashion District, Downtown Los Angeles Size: 1500 square feet Years lived in: Rent for 1 year Maria and her boyfriend Boris share a sunny, industrial loft in the Fashion District of Downtown Los Angeles. A large and open space, the couple had to create rooms in a floor plan without many existing walls or distinct areas. They combined styles to craft cozy hangout spots all over the beautiful apartment.

Name: Katherine Harris Location: Highland Park; St. Paul, Minnesota Size: 850 square feet Years lived in: 9 months rented As a professional photographer, Katie has a keen eye for design, finding inspiration in vintage kitchens and old farmhouses. Most of all, Katie leans heavily on the philosophy that decor need not be expensive. To Katie, meaningfulness trumps all else, with the majority of her furniture being gifts, hand-me-downs, and local purchases.

Name: Kerry Clarkson, and daughter Azure Location: Santa Barbara, California Size: 1,000 square feet Years lived in: Rented 1 year, 8 months It’s been well over a year now since Kerry left Lima, Peru, deciding to stay in Santa Barbara after a visit. That meant leaving a lot behind and starting over with very little in the way of material items and furniture.

Name: Leslie Lewis Location: Indianapolis, Indiana Size: 630 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years; rented The big windows are Leslie’s favorite thing about her apartment. A corner unit with a great view of downtown Indianapolis, the light streams in, illuminating a cozy home full of unique (and mostly vintage) decor.

Name: Seth and Ali Rongkawit Location: Ballard — Seattle, Washington Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: Renting 2+ years When Seth and Ali moved into this Seattle space, they faced the same design dilemma that many renters come across: How to create distinct areas when your apartment is wide open. After two years of living here, they’ve found a layout that functions well. And they’ve added their personality to create a bright and sweet home.

Name: Mina, Sumit, Alec, Louis & Léonie Location: Bromma, a suburb to Stockholm, Sweden Size: 168 square metros square feet Years lived in: 1 month In the suburban neighborhood of Bromma, outside the city of Stockholm, Mina and Sumit have created a beautiful space for their young family in their newly built home. Mina loves this home’s large windows and open concept floor plan, and her minimal, casual approach to design maximizes the airy feeling of this home.

Name: Travis Location: Lakeview — Chicago, Illinois Size: 1000 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, rented Travis grew up in Louisiana and Texas, but has been living in Chicago for a medical residency for the last couple years. He made sure to bring his southern roots with him in the form of decor. Travis’s apartment has a sort of dark & gothic feel to it. He attributes this to all the “dead things” around the apartment. He has taxidermy, bones and shells in every room.

Name: Clare, Jakob and baby Nikolai Location: West Berlin, Germany Size: 122 square meters (1313 square feet) Years lived in: 2 years Jakob and Clare moved into this West Berlin home a couple of years ago, and have since added little Nikolai to the family! Light-filled rooms and tall ceilings are balanced with a contemporary mix of furnishings and stunning architectural detail.

Name: Trish Grantham and Rentz Leinbach, and Pablo the dog Location: Northeast Portland, Oregon Size: 1,400 square feet Years lived in: Renting 9 months From the moment you step into the foyer of Trish and Rentz’s home and find yourself surrounded by dark walls adorned with hand-painted gold tropical foliage, you know you’ve entered a unique space. Trish is an artist and interior designer, Rentz is a musician, and their home is colorful, fun, quirky and interesting, just like them.

Name: Dave and Mollie Code Location: West Loop — Chicago, Illinois Size: 2,300 square feet Years lived in: 1 years Tall ceilings, brick walls, sleek surfaces—this raw, industrial-style space is the home of Dave and Mollie Code. They run Studio Code together, a development firm based in Chicago with the goal of restoring the historic elements of homes while also creating functioning spaces.

Name: Andre Hueston Mack and Phoebe Damrosch Location: Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn Size: 2,200 square feet Years lived in: 5 years Andre Mack has a lot on his plate these days—sommelier, winemaker, author, graphic designer, and father to three charming boys. He and his wife Phoebe have created a beautiful family home in Brooklyn, where styles merge and creativity abounds. Our Style: Belongings with a soul and a story.

Ivana likes simple things. She loves the sensation of an empty space. And her condo reflects that; the style is simple, modern and minimalist.

Name: Pilar Sinclair Location: Cinta Costera — Panama City, Panama Size: 1184 square feet Years lived in: Rented 1 year Panama City is a place of contrasts. And the Cinta Costera neighborhood is very modern, with the best views in the city. The Pacific Ocean is right in front of your eyes (you can almost jump in and take a dip!). Pilar has the incredible luck of waking up everyday with these views—as well as living in the colorful, playful home she’s created.

Name: Megan Jorgensen Location: Highland Park — Los Angeles, California Size: 2 bedroom Years lived in: Rented 6 months Megan Jorgensen is an artist whose carefully edited collection of unconventional knick knacks has followed her from Minneapolis to California and everywhere in between. From antique tools to mini figurines—and her own paintings and textiles—her artistic assortment is displayed throughout her home in thoughtful vignettes.

Name: Suzanne of Decogirl Montreal Location: Downtown, Montreal Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: 9 months Suzanne is an interior decorator working in Montreal who excels at creating luxurious decor where exuberance, drama, class, color and comfort all mix together to create intriguing and wonderful spaces. Suzanne finds inspiration for every project in Coco Chanel, Bunny Williams, and Jonathan Adler, to name a few.

Name: Danny and Lyndsay Gugger Location: Portland, Maine Size: 950 square feet Years lived in: Renting 2 months Danny writes: “My wife and I live on the historic Deering Street in Portland, Maine. The building was built in the mid-1800s and our unit is around 950 square feet. We have 10 foot ceilings and black marble fireplaces in both the living room and bedroom. We recently moved from Wisconsin, where we lived in another mid-1800s home.

For them, “less is more” is not just a phrase, it’s the way they built their home together. They are musicians with Uke, a band that plays soft and sweet music made with heart.

Ana is one of them. This incredible Panamanian woman has great energy and knows how to transform it into beautiful art pieces. She’s a woman with good taste and she’s committed to everything she does. Art is Ana’s passion and she’s filled everything around her with that spirit.

Name: Sandra Location: L’eixample — Valencia, Spain. Size: 3530 square feet Years lived in: Owned 5 years Sandra’s home is full of flowers. Incredible light and high ceilings frame floral patterns, shades of blue and elaborate tiles, which in turn add modernity to a space with stunning, classic architectural details. Sandra is a fashion designer and has her own brand, Kaif. She also has a beautiful store in Valencia where she sells all the pieces she creates.

Name: Annette and Jason and their two cats, Fitzgerald and Chiquita Location: Los Angeles, California Size: 4000 square feet Years lived in: Rented 3 years I can honestly say that this is one of the most unique houses I have ever photographed. Nestled inside of an old Edison Electric Building, Annette and Jason have made their home in a mixture of long tunnels, small cutout nooks and large expansive spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Name: Jorie Garcia and Trevor Bennett Location: Southeast Portland, Oregon Size: 640 square feet Years lived in: Renting 4 years For those of you who have had the pleasure of laying eyes on Schoolhouse Electric’s gorgeously styled catalogs, today’s house tour will provide you with a bit of a fan girl or boy moment. If you’ve seen those perfectly imperfect gallery walls, and effortlessly fluffed pillows, then you’re familiar with Jorie Garcia’s work.

Name: Olga de la iglesia Location: Barcelona, Spain Size: 750 square feet Years lived in: Rented, 1 year This is the home of a multi-talented creative woman living and working in Barcelona. Olga is an art director and photographer who heads up Refresco Caribe. She lives in both Spain and the Dominican Republic, which helps to explain the beautiful Caribbean atmosphere in her home.

Name: Stephanie Michaan Location: West Village NYC Size: 1,495 square feet Years lived in: Owned 6 years Though Stephanie has owned this apartment in New York’s West Village for six years, she says it feels brand new thanks to a recent redesign she gave the home. White walls maximize the beautiful bright natural light that pours in from big windows. Sparse furnishings are kept interesting by choosing good designs in rich materials.

Name: Nick Fanelle and Spiro Georgi Location: Edgewater— Chicago, Illinois Size: 1,600 square feet Years lived in: Rented 2 years You might remember Nick and Spiro’s previous Apartment Therapy house tour where they showcased their fabulous farmhouse style, perfectly situated right in the city of Chicago. At the time they were transforming their Vermont-inspired style from one that was more traditional to a more contemporary version.

Name: Simone Tobias, designer/owner SIMONE TOBIAS swimwear Location: Williamsburg — Brooklyn, New York Size: 1,250 square feet Years lived in: 2.5 years Simone’s apartment, on the 29th floor of a tower that overlooks the East River and the Williamsburg Bridge, has some pretty impressive views, but if you visit you might be so taken with the things in her apartment that you hardly even notice the ones outside.

Name: Sally “the decorator” Smallwood and Cameron “learning to love grey” Algie Location: Toronto, Canada Size: 958.2 square feet (approximately) Years lived in: Own 8.5 years (with a little help from the bank) As soon as you enter Sally and Cameron’s home you can immediately feel and understand their personalities—warm, friendly and most of all FUN! Neither of them are afraid to push the limits of design.

Name: Marina Senabre Location: Gracia — Barcelona, Spain Size: 536 square feet Years lived in: Renting 5 years Marina is an interior and graphic designer at La buhardi. She lives in the big city but her heart is in the island of Minorca, where she spends lots of time during the year. That’s why her home in the middle of Barcelona has a neutral, cozy Mediterranean look.

Name: Ashley Mary Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota Size: 650 square feet Years lived in: Renting 1 year It’s no surprise that abstract artist Ashley Mary‘s home is a blend of textures, styles and materials. Her art features soft color palettes melding with gentle shapes with the occasional pop of black drama…just like her Minneapolis rental apartment.

Name: Jane Location: Noe Valley — San Francisco, California Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: 1 year What makes Jane’s home unique is the mixture of items and styles that can only be described as “Happy Californian,” such as the bedroom wallpaper inspired by greenery, the mid-century modern furniture and paintings, and the gorgeous vaulted ceilings that make her smile every day.

Name: Hilary and Glenn Location: Central District — Seattle, Washington Size: 1,382 square feet Years lived in: 3 years Guests make their way up to Hilary and Glenn’s front door via a winding path that’s a little on the steep side—even by Seattle standards. And when you walk inside, you definitely feel as if you’ve reached a summit of sorts.

Name: Mercedes La Rosa Location: Mile End — Montréal, Québec Size: 850 square feet Years lived in: Rented 4 years Just steps away from the bustle of cafés and bookstores along rue Bernard, Mercedes’ 850 square foot apartment is a quiet gem in the heart of the Mile End. Standing at the threshold to her ground floor apartment, surrounded by green leafy plants, the New Yorker Radio Hour’s “Cat vs. Dog” podcast can be heard through her living room window.

Name: Liz and Brendan, and cat Vincent Location: Mount Vernon Square — Washington, D.C. Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: Renting 10 months Inviting, modern, and thoughtful. Like most people, Brendan and I have sought to make our living space representative of who we are. When we combined our homes last year, we had to be intentional about what came with us. Brendan is a web developer and I’m a graphic designer.

She loves it so much she filled her home with it, and the hue works perfectly with the beautiful light coming from windows. She’s a creative woman in love with crafts, and she traded in a previous career for her real passion; she created Saladas, a beautiful jewelry store inspired by the Mediterranean way of living.

From the moment you step inside this stunning apartment with bedroom loft, you are greeted with warm colors and a smiling host.

Name: A-K Parker and Jeremy Gleeson Location: Stoke Newington, London Size: 628 square feet Years lived in: Rented for 3 years Light, airy and fun are my first impressions of this lovely one bed flat in Stoke Newington in London. A-K, a half-Danish art director in advertising, draws a lot of her inspiration from classic Danish design, which she likes to mix up with interesting objects she and her boyfriend Jeremy collected over the years while travelling.

Name: Edwin Nikkels Location: Amsterdam – The Netherlands Size: 645 square feet Years lived in: Renting 1 year Edwin played it smart when it came to furnishing his small space; he kept the design minimal, the colors neutral and found a unique way to carve out a bedroom (despite there not being an actual bedroom). He also invested in high-quality pieces of furniture and decor. The result is an airy, “feels bigger than its size” space.

Not surprisingly, considering the home’s occupants: Anke Summerhill, the Creative Director of Minotti London, and her husband John Summerhill, MD of Minotti London.

Name: Gretchen Maull of GG Maull Location: Tribeca / City Hall — New York, NY Size: 1,800 square feet Years lived in: Rented 2 years I absolutely love seeing cleanly designed spaces that aren’t afraid to work with bold graphic patterns and colors. This beautifully designed home in the heart of Manhattan has everything that you’d want to see in a modern luxe New York apartment.

Name: Anna Hervera and her husband Location: L’eixample — Barcelona, Spain Size: 807 square feet Years lived in: Owned 3 years This simple but colorful home in the middle of Barcelona is sweet and genuine, like its owner. She loves uncomplicated things, but things that also feature a special detail. That’s why the entire house is calm and bright but each room has a je ne sais quoi element. Anna loves art, design and interiors, and you can feel that around the entire apartment.

Name: Shanade McAllister-Fisher Location: Little Venice — London, UK Years lived in: Owned 6 months Interior designer Shanade writes: “My husband and I bought this one bedroom apartment in leafy West London from our local authority. It was in a very sorry state and hadn’t been updated for many years but the magnificent Georgian sash windows and beautiful high ceilings won me over immediately and I knew I had to have it.

Her choice of white walls and light-toned furniture contrast the dark wood floors and cabinets, giving the space a crisp, classic appeal.
