Tara does. She fell in love with her mid-century home the moment she walked in the door. This house, with its bright pops of color and classic lines, is just perfect to house her ever-evolving collections. Gallery walls are quite the trend these days and Tara has turned them into an art form.

Name: Monique, Stu, and their daughters, Lulu and Petula Location: Eltham; Melbourne, Victoria Size: 200 square metres (2,153 square feet) Years lived in: 6.5 years; Owned Monique and Stu’s home is cute, colorful, and inviting. Located in a leafy outer suburb of Melbourne, it is a perfect place to bring up their two young daughters.

Name: Carla Caruso Location: Ashfield, MA Size: 2,100 square feet Years lived in: 5 years; Owned Designer Carla Caruso, of Carla Caruso Jewelry, bought her home in the sleepy town of Ashfield, MA, five years ago. Nestled in the hilltowns of western Massachusetts, Carla embarked on a years-long renovation project, which she tackled largely on her own. The result is an eclectic and vibrant take on the New England farmhouse.

This 100-year-old Craftsman-style home and opened up the living room, dining room, and kitchen to create one comfortable, communal space.

Name: Amy, Noah, River, Darby, and Isaiah Location: Portland, Maine Size: 1,800 square feet Years lived in: 9 years; Owned Far away from white and empty spaces, Amy and Noah celebrate the art of uniqueness, embracing blasts from the past, dramatic patterns and a modern era. The result is so refreshing that it left me speechless. Amy and Noah are the founders of Picnic, an indie music and art festival, and owners of Pinecone+Chickadee, a boutique full of quirky finds and old-time surprises.

Name: Linzi Clary and Spencer Tubbs Location: Providence, RI Size: 1,150 square feet Years lived in: 2 years; Rented Linzi Clary and her boyfriend Spencer Tubbs have an eye for interiors and share a passion for mid-century design. Linzi, a fine arts graduate and designer at Speidel, and Spencer, a shopkeeper and musician, moved to Providence two years ago, combining their styles and passions to create one seriously mod and beautiful space that truly reflects their personalities.

Name: Leila Younis and Ike the Pug Location: Ottawa, Ontario Size: 1,400 square feet Years lived in: 4 years; Owned Leila’s 110 year-old house is spacious, welcoming, and filled to the brim with personality. Since she bought the home four years ago, Leila has taken the time to make the space her own with both large renovation projects such as the kitchen or smaller touches like the accent walls in the living room and craft room.

Name: Edith, husband Ole, and 2-year-old daughter Ebba Location: Holtet — Oslo, Norway Size: 1,600 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned Welcome to Scandi Week—Apartment Therapy’s seven-day focus on all-things Scandinavia (often defined as the countries of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway). Sometimes it seems like the whole world is obsessed with trying to copy this corner of the globe, from its timeless style aesthetic to its now-famous coziness rituals.

Name: Jenny and Jim O’Connor (with children Lily, 3 and James, 7 months) Location: State Streets; Livonia, Michigan Size: 1,088 square feet Years lived in: 4 years; Owned Jenny and her family live in Livonia’s State Streets, a neighborhood where most streets are named after U.S. states. The neighborhood is adjacent to Old Rosedale, where Jenny’s parents Sue and Doug live.

Name: Jasmin Snyder Location: Irvington; Indianapolis, Indiana Size: 994 square feet of living space, 400 square feet of unfinished basement Years lived in: 3.5 years; Owned Jasmin’s house doesn’t immediately reveal the creative wealth it holds inside.

Name: Tonia & Gregory Home and their two sons Location: Prevelly; Margaret River, Western Australia Size: approx. 1,000 square metres (10,764 square feet) Years lived in: 20 years for Gregory, 10 years with Tonia; Owned Upon walking into this home, you immediately feel its warm embrace.

Name: Natalie Jeffcott, Nick Fitzgerald, and Arthur Location: Inner north; Melbourne, Australia Size: 500 square metres (5,382 square feet) Years lived in: 1 year; Owned Natalie, Nick, and their 10-year-old son Arthur are seasoned renovators, re-cyclers, and collectors.

Name: Victoria Mason and Cass Godden (and dog Peggy) Location: Northcote, Victoria, Australia Size: 120 square metres, 2 bedroom, 2 bathrooms Years lived in: 6 years; Owned Victoria Mason is a talented jeweler and artist, her partner Cass Godden is a pastry chef, and together they are also talented DIY-ers. Over the years, they have slowly restored, renovated, ripped out, and added to their inner Melbourne home — often with the help of Cass’ dad.

Name: Brandon Kleinman Location: West Hollywood; Los Angeles, CA Years lived in: 4 years; Rented Bachelors may have a reputation for maintaining less-than-desirable living quarters, but as the founder and CMO of online interior design firm Laurel & Wolf, Brandon Kleinman refused to fall victim to such stereotypes.

Name: Chris and Madgi Del Moro Location: Los Angeles, CA Size: 650 square feet Years lived in: 2 1/2 years; Rented Soulmates Chris and Madgi live to explore Mother Earth. Both artists, they find their inspiration in their travels around the world, and they bring that creativity back home to Los Angeles. Chris is an artist, musician, and professional surfer and his handiwork is abundant in the newlyweds’ home, from the paintings on the wall to the studio he built.

The couple’s vast collection of folk art covers the interior walls like a modern day version of the storied Parisian salons. “We like to pile it on thick,” Emily says with a laugh.

Name: Sweatson Klank Location: Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: 10 years; Rented As soon as you walk into Sweatson’s home, the living area is spacious, inviting and warm. My first observation is that Sweatson is an artist who has a knack for collecting things.

Name: James and Shanna Location: Durham, NC Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: Renting less than one year James is a production manager for Merge Records (you may know some of their artists – She & Him, Arcade Fire and Caribou, to name a few) and Cleveland Browns enthusiast. Shanna is the Director of Marketing for InMotionNow, a work management solutions company for creatives.

Name: Tiffany Napper Location: Uptown; New Orleans, Louisiana Size: 1,400 square feet Years lived in: 5 years; Owned When Tiffany Napper was house hunting in New Orleans five years ago, she couldn’t get her mind off the first place she saw. The little white shotgun, located near the Mississippi River, was previously owned by a 93-year-old woman who had been born in the house and lived there until she died. It had drop ceilings, faux wood paneling, and dirty wall-to-wall carpeting.

Name: Rachel Lee Location: East Hills; Grand Rapids, MI Size: 1,560 square feet Years lived in: 9 months; Owned When I told a mutual friend that I was photographing Rachel Lee’s house for Apartment Therapy, that friend said, “Her house is cool as hell.” Upon entering Rachel’s house for the first time, I immediately agreed. The wall colors, the white outlines, the arched doors, the collection of globes: I had found my new favorite house.

Name: Kirsten Thoft and Ted Nadeau Location: Princeton, NJ Size: 3200 square feet (including lower level apartment / family room) Years lived in: 2 years; owned So many words are needed to describe Kirsten and Ted’s multi-faceted home: beautiful, sustainable, functional, light, airy, warm, homey, and even industrial! Kirsten, an architect, purchased the site and originally planned to build a spec home.

Name: Melissa and Kevin; children Elle, Harper and Beckham; and Ally the cat Location: Old Rosedale Gardens; Livonia, Michigan Size: 2,000 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; Owned Melissa and Kevin are raising their family in the Detroit suburb of Livonia. They live in the historic Old Rosedale Gardens neighborhood, which was modeled after Detroit’s Rosedale Park. Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1920s and 30s and each house looks different.

Name: Carl Seeno Location: Shaw; Washington, DC Size: 375 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years; rented Carl lives in the carriage house that’s attached to Jonathan and Colleen’s place, and when I peeked into his clean, stylish and seemingly spacious 375 square feet, there was no question: we’d have to take a tour of the carriage house, too!

Size: 1,700 square feet Years lived in: 5 years; Owned Jonathan was my thesis advisor in the interior design program at the Corcoran College of Art + Design, and while he guided me and my classmates through the design of our imaginary spaces, he and his wife, Colleen, were busy renovating this very real house in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood.

Name: Kristin, Derek, and their children, Jackson and Luella Location: Hollywood Hills; Los Angeles, CA Size: 1500 square feet Years lived in: 6 years; Owned Nestled amidst the storied hills of Laurel Canyon, Kristin and Derek’s rustic home is every bit as charming as you can imagine. Laurel Canyon is famous for its past musical residents,- Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, David Crosby, Graham Nash, the list goes on and on.

Name: Doris Lee, husband Jon and son Jak Location: West London, UK Size: 1,245 square feet Years lived in: 5 years This high-ceilinged Victorian terrace on a quiet road in West London is home to interior designer and blogger Doris Lee, husband Jon and their five-year-old son Jak.

Name: John & Jo Ryan, and 3 kids (Erica [absent], Austin and Sophia) Location: Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia Size: 26 square meters Years lived in: 9.5 years owned With three growing kids to think about, Jo and John have put together a functional family home with different spaces to study, play music and relax. The neutral color palette makes it a calming space to be in, and its proximity to the ocean lends to the cruisy vibe.

Name: Abby Greenawalt, photographer Location: Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. Size: 550 square feet Years lived in: Rented 8 years We first got a peek at Abby’s style in her house call last year, where she showed off her bold use of color and her comfortable, cozy selection of furnishings in her third floor apartment. The extra bedroom of her tiny space had been serving as a sublet where friends and more helped share her apartment over the years.

Name: Karen Hollywood Location: Nashville, Tennessee Size: 3,500 square feet Years lived in: 9 years You may recognize Miss Hollywood’s home from Toby Keith’s Red Solo Cup video, or maybe Rhonda Vincent and Dolly Parton’s video for Heartbreakers Alibi, or maybe Miranda Lambert’s Dead Flowers video, or perhaps Martina McBride’s Teenage Daughters video.

Name: Laura Blythman and 4-year-old Alexander Location: Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, Australia Size: 3 bedrooms, living, and dining Years lived in: 1.5 years; Rental A darling of the thriving Melbourne art and design world, Laura Blythman is known for her bright, neon watercolor collages and playful illustrations and designs. So it’s no surprise her home is full of color, art and life, a real reflection of the explosion of color that must be in Laura’s head constantly.

Name: Rob Maddox and Karie Reinertson, owners of Shelter Collective Location: Asheville, North Carolina Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 3 years; rented Rob and Karie have created a home that beautifully recounts their lives through displays of unique treasures and layers of textiles, many of which have been collected from family and friends.

Name: Kathy McGee and Matt McGee, their two children, and two golden retrievers Location: Franklin, Tennessee Size: 3,900 square feet Years lived in: 8 1/2 years Kathy has been in love with design ever since she got to choose her bedroom’s paint color in the 7th grade. Surrounded by that lavender, she read magazines and dreamt of being a writer. Many years later, she started the blog My Interior Life. After that, her design business was the next step.

Surprising uses of wallpaper and fabric — from the glamorous palm wallpaper in the kitchen to the African wax cloth curtains in the dining room to the vintage Moroccan wedding blanket fashioned into a headboard in the master bedroom — play a big role in creating this home’s unique visual texture. Name: Helen Edwards, Blogger, Stylist, Author & Wellbeing Coach Location: Rostrevor, South Australia Size: 1,884 square feet Years lived in: 16 years; Owned Helen is a fantastic force of creativity and happiness, and her cozy home is an extension of her bright and colorful character. Filled with things found, bought and gifted, it’s the layers and depth of time that make this house something of a warm hug hello.

Name: Megan and Josh Miller Location: Nashville, Tennessee Size: 2,000 square feet Years lived in: 5 1/2 years Megan is a stay-at-home mom with two girls and a baby on the way. Stretching a dollar is sometimes a necessity, but it’s also fun. Scouring Craigslist, flea markets, discount stores, and garage sales are a way of life for her. In fact, she’s gotten so good at finding Craigslist deals she started Curating Craigslist to share her finds with people in the Nashville area.

Name: Jess Viscarde, partner and Peg the rescue cat. Location: North Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia Size: Two bedroom, two story townhouse (square feet unknown) Years lived in: 18 months, rented An interior stylist by trade, Jess also started and curates the popular #pocketofmyhome hashtag on Instagram. A sucker for a great vignette, she loves nothing more than changing up her living space to reflect her interests and aesthetic.

Name: Brick + Mortar Location: Size: Years lived in: David Kowalski, the vintage curator/designer behind local Atlanta favorites such as Bell Street BurritosThe PinewoodLadybird Grove & Mess Hall David certainly keeps himself busy with new projects rolling in, and most recently, his pop-up shop in the Westside Provisions District. So, I was lucky enough to catch him on a rainy afternoon which happened to be the perfect vibe for his comfy 1930s bungalow.

Name: Cristina Colli Location: Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Size: 950 square feet Years lived in: 3 and a half years; Rented Cristina Colli’s home that she shares with husband Paolo, and cats Cleo and Sid, sits nestled just below the high street of bustling Cotswold market town Chipping Norton (or Chippy, as it’s known to the locals).

For many years she’s worked in film and television as a set stylist and decorator. However she also has an entirely different business, reading tarot as a psychic healer.

It conjures a sense of space through dramatic restraint, a play on traditional minimalism.

Name: Henriette van der Does Location: Guildford, Surrey, United Kingdom Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 3 years 9 months; owned This bright, inviting house, filled with sculpture, paintings and books, is home to Henriette, a painter, sculptress and art psychotherapist, her two teenage children and their two (extremely fluffy) cats. Having left her native Holland for London, Colombia and then Brazil twenty years ago, she now calls southern England home.

Name: Mia Cefkin Location: Franklin, North Carolina Size: 1,600 square feet Years lived in: 2 years; Owned A drive down (and up) windy mountain roads past farms, fields, and old country homesteads will bring you to an unexpectedly adorable log cabin; one that fortuitously persuaded Mia and her husband David to leave their urban Florida home of many years for the simple life in North Carolina.

But among them is a special home, a Prairie-style Craftsman house designed by the famed architect George Grant Elmslie, that is unique in its beauty, scale and architectural detail.

Yet she has somehow made a home that isn’t stiff or formal. And have I mentioned she lives in a “builder’s special” home?

Name: Frances and Dom Rogers Location: Abingdon — Oxfordshire, United Kingdom Size: 1,300 square feet Years lived in: 8 years; Owned Everywhere you look inside this family home are delightful details that have been created by homeowner Frances’ artistic hand: From the murals that adorn the kitchen walls and breakfast bar, to the mosaics lovingly made from salvaged pebbles, to paintings, ceramics, woodwork, textiles and more.

Name: Kimberlee Brown (& Chuck Bass the British Blue) Location: Beulah Park, South Australia Size: 82 square metres (883 square feet) Years lived in: 3 years; Owned I love this fresh, bright home Kimberlee has made so warm and inviting. An original single-fronted bluestone cottage with tin roof on a beautiful quiet tree-lined street, the home has been completely renovated and updated for modern living.

Name: Tyler Antrup and Matthias Helfen Location: St Roch; New Orleans, Louisiana Size: 850 square feet Years lived in: 1 year; Owned Tyler and Matthias’ cottage, shared by kitty Bruce and pitbull rescue Omie Wise, is hard to miss when coming up their street. The Crayola-esque hues make the house stand out amongst the neighbors, many of which are in pre-renovation state.

When you’re a design lover with a flair for blending patterns and textures, well that takes it to a whole new level. Dana’s home is a palette of calming, soothing colors, which immediately puts you at ease. Which is great.

Name: Karen and Kevin Location: Guildford, Surrey, UK Size: 1,000 square feet Years lived in: 18 years; owned This Victorian apartment in central Guildford is home to Karen, a visual merchandiser who’s embarking on a new career in interior design, and husband Kevin, an aircraft engineer.

Name: Liz and Tim Hoad Location: Worth Matravers, Dorset, United Kingdom Size: 750 square feet Years lived in: 16 years; Owned In the heart of a picturesque Dorset village on the Purbeck coast, this former shoemaker’s shop has been home to Liz and Tim for 16 years. For many years, Liz, with her love of gardens and the countryside, and Tim, with his love of the sailing and the sea, enjoyed family holidays here.

Name: Brandy Adams Location: Nashville, Tennessee Size: 4,000 square feet Years lived in: 4.5 years Brandy owns MAKE + MODEL, an online store that sells furniture and decorative accessories. In the “shoppe” section of her website, you have four choices: Mid-Century Modern, Palm Springs Chic, Hollywood Regency, or Global Style. Her home encompasses all of these styles with the deft hand of a true aficionado.

This outdoor space is perfect to be enjoy on any given evening in Los Angeles, and her home is roomy and full of personality.

Name: Susan Harlan, English professor at Wake Forest University, + dog Millie Location: Winston-Salem, North Carolina Size: 2,000 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, 4 months; owned While sitting on a beach in Santa Barbara, Susan recalled the rooms of the house she had just decided to buy in North Carolina. Name: Dan Maddox + Alan Rauta of Cromatti Location: West Los Angeles, California Size: 2,200 square feet Years lived in: 7 years—Own Dan and Alan have been enjoying this modern and airy two-story home for about seven years.
