Prioritizing the things that soften the blow of an international move on a family, Angela wanted a home with a great location, access to schools and outdoor space.

Name: Mark Location: Hudson Valley, New York The basics: 6 months, owned — 440 square feet Mark was looking for studio space and in order to get more bang for his buck he decide to look outside of New York City. He found a barn with a long artistic history and new it was the place for him. He renovated a studio apartment underneath the barn, creating a bright and warm home base while tackling larger renovations on the property.

Name: Emily and Gigi the dog Location: Norwood, Ohio The basics: 5 months, owned — 1,067 square feet Emily and her adorable dog roommate Gigi settled into this cute craftsman after a decade of renting. It was love at first site for Emily and after the ink dried on her contracts she set about turning the house into her ideal first home.

Name: Amber & Joe Location: Toluca Lake — Los Angeles, California The basics: Just over 2 years, owned — 1,200 square feet Amber and Joe are big travelers and bargain hunters so their space is a fun eclectic mix of treasures. Keeping things neutral and peaceful through paint choices and lighting, they’ve also filled the house with one of a kind items.

Name: Nithin Ismail Location: Hyderabad — Telangana, India The basics: One year, owned — 1,500 square feet Nithin, a design manager, carries his passion for design out of the office and into the home. He brings his trained eye to every aspect of his space, curating a home with clean lines and elegant simplicity. Name: Allie Location: Williamsburg — Brooklyn, New York The basics: 4 years, rented — about 900 square feet Allie’s super-stylish Williamsburg apartment has a ton of cool-girl character. Filled with souvenirs, cookbooks and DIY small space hacks, it has a well-lived earthiness to it, which for a frequent traveler like Allie, is always nice to come home to. Name: Mary Jane, her husband Julian, their son Roman and their English Bulldog Vito Location: Vancouver, British Columbia The basics: 2 years, owned — 2,000 square feet Mary Jane’s home is filled with earthy warmth thanks to the fantastic combo of honey-toned wood and white paint. The home’s high ceilings and big windows flood the space with light, while the small accents around the home lend it an air of curated homeyness to help combat all of that Vancouver rain.

Name: Lauren, Phil and their daughters Indigo and Coco Location: Parkdale, Australia The basics: 3.5 years, owned — 68 square meters/731 square feet Lauren and her husband Phil, interior designers by trade, have updated their apartment to create a stylish and functional home for a family of four. As you might imagine, they’ve become storage and organization masters, but that doesn’t mean the space is lacking in fun. Bright and colorful, their apartment feels tastefully homey.
