She had just finished studying fashion design in India at NIFT, and moved to Oregon to join Naveen who works at Intel.

It sort of sealed the deal for us.

Three years ago, she moved to Venice, California for a lifestyle change.

To exotic places like India, Bolivia, Nairobi, and in fact, was just about to dash to New York with her four-year-old twins the day after our shoot. So travel definitely plays a big part in her home, with lots of colors and items that were picked up from all over the world.

Name: Molly Crist Location: Los Feliz — Los Angeles, California Size: 400 square feet Years lived in: 5 years, renting Molly knows a thing or two about small space living; she’s been renting this lovely studio apartment since her arrival in Los Angeles five years ago. And though it’s a challenge, it’s a challenge she enjoys tackling: she’s used all the square feet in her home, from corner to corner and top to bottom.

Name: Siria Alvarez and Emmanuel Perez Location: West Harlem — New York, NY Years lived in: 3 years, renting Siria and Emmanuel were lucky to score a Harlem apartment with great bones: High ceilings makes the space feel spacious, a heavy but glorious fireplace is a bold focal point, and a dark-wood hallway is a striking statement. But it’s how Siria and Emmanuel have furnished the space that makes it so inspiring.

I work full time on Sunday/Monday from home and Brendan helps on nights and weekends, so our apartment search was as much of a studio search as an apartment hunt.

Name: McKenzie Elizabeth Ditter and Matt Muirhead Location: Just outside Baltimore, Maryland Size: 1150 square feet Years Lived In: 1.5 years, renting It’s clear what the focus is in this Maryland rental home: creativity. Here, two spaces downstairs that might typically be used as a living room and dining room have instead been transformed into two art studios. McKenzie is a painter and wedding photographer, and Matt is a painter and builds his own musical instruments.

The photo stylist by day/artist all the time has decorated her three-bedroom home in a comfortable way that tells the story of a creative always willing to be inspired.

Add to that a messy (artistic) profession requiring oil paints and large canvases, and it becomes truly challenging to balance work and personal life in one space.

There isn’t really anything like it. The space is private and magical with multiple structures, each inviting and bold.

The couple’s creative solution was a fun one: They decided to simply go all in and live on a 40-foot house boat during the week! If you live in L.A.

Leaving Boston, the East Coast, and a number of dark, dreary apartments behind, they were determined to find a home with outdoor space and lots of natural light.

Currently a Design Producer at Dropbox, she’s also worked for companies like Facebook, Square, IDEO, and more.

She’s the founder and CEO of Chillhouse, a nail salon/spa/cafe that’s “a destination for modern self-care” on the Lower East Side.

Name: Dawn Sweitzer of Notre Monde Location: High Point, North Carolina Years working in: 5 years, owned Dawn Sweitzer is the artist behind Notre Monde, a brand known for textiles, furniture, and accessories like trays, art, mirrors, and more. Her designs are distinct, as well as modern, minimal, and a little bohemian, too.

Name: Elyse DeLisle and Amanda Goelz and their cats Pig and Poe Location: On the road; Currently in Palm Springs, California Size: 240 square feet/ 34-feet long Years lived in: Owned — We began renovating the trailer in Spring 2018 and started living in it in July 2018. There were two things Elyse and Amanda wanted to do together: renovate a home and travel. They were living in Melbourne, Florida, when they decided to buy a fixer-upper.

He is a licensed contractor and I’ve recently graduated with a degree in interior design. We flip houses full time and are always looking for the next project or creative outlet. Kate, one half of the Minneapolis-based custom hand-painted and printed wallpaper and furnishings company She She, lucked out when she nabbed this spacious, bright, and beautiful upper floor apartment.

Name: Maya Goldfine Location: San Francisco, California Size: 400 square feet Years Lived In: 6 months, renting Call it fate or luck, but something aligned the day I found this studio. By chance I had come across the listing on Craigslist the evening prior—at 5:45 p.m. it was posted that an open house was happening at 7:30 a.m. the next day.

The interior of her Los Angeles rental apartment, which she shares with her fiancé Joe, is filled with colorful accessories and dozens of plants to match her dreamy, jungle-y feed.

They found this 500 square foot downtown apartment on their only day of searching and they knew that they had to have it (especially after seeing the next one on their list).

High ceilings and interesting, multi-level mid-century architecture allow natural light to flood in from every direction, bouncing off the simple white walls.

She bought the home after traveling and living overseas for many years and essentially had a clean slate to work with upon purchasing her 19th-century Brooklyn brownstone.

With this move, she has gained a second floor walk-up apartment flooded with ample natural light, gorgeous architectural details, and an incredible view from her little deck.

Travel to this part of Mexico City without leaving your home or find inspiration and ideas to add to your own home.

Name: Kelly Lamb Location: Los Feliz—Los Angeles, California Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: Owned 1.5 years Kelly is an artist, ceramicist and designer living in the Hollywood Hills end of Los Feliz. While she remodels the main house, Kelly has been living in the property’s guest cabin. What I loved most about this guest house is how it encompasses the quintessential Los Angeles vibe: bohemian, warm, welcoming and completely drenched in natural light.

And seeing what a smart job she did designing her San Francisco studio apartment, it would seem she’s got great advice to give!
