This $17 Find Blocked Out the North Pole’s Midnight Sun Better Than Any Blackout Curtain
I was looking forward to almost everything about my cruise to Svalbard, an archipelago in Norway. The region, close to the North Pole, has an otherworldly landscape with enormous icebergs. Polar bears, walruses, Arctic terns, and the elusive blue whale all call Svalbard home, and I couldn’t wait to see them for myself. Yet, I was worried about one aspect of the trip: the midnight sun.

I Threw a “Show and Tell” Night with My Friends, and Now I’ll Never Go Back to a Normal Dinner Party
One of my favorite parts of childhood was show and tell. I always had something to talk about and show off to my classmates — I had a lot of interests — and to this day, I think it’s a great way to get to know another person. So I was excited to discover an event in Chicago called Show and Tell for Grown Ups, where a small group of presenters have five minutes each to talk about their passion, with a few minutes after for the audience to ask questions.

An All-Gray Bathroom Got a Colorful Redo with an Unrecognizable IKEA Hack
One of homeowner and interior designer Chloë Rideout’s (@chloerideoutinteriors) goals for her bathroom makeover was to make it look less cookie-cutter and more vintage. After all, her condo is in an 1835 rowhome. But in the first three years that Chloë and her husband, Joe, lived there, the bathroom was “gray and boring,” Chloë says.

They Used to Avoid This Cramped Bathroom — A Space-Saving Redo Fixed It
People who live in smaller homes can probably relate to this sentiment from designer Lauren Saab @saabstudios.design): “In a smaller home, you feel the inefficiencies of every square foot,” she says. And Lauren was definitely feeling the inefficiencies in her 1,162-square-foot 1950s house’s bathroom. “The bathroom was one of the smallest rooms in the house, but the vanity made it feel even tighter,” she says.

This DIY Kitchen Makeover Has a Countertop Like I’ve Never Seen Before
Don’t get me wrong — all of the kitchens I’ve written about are special and gorgeous in their own way, but sometimes, a feature comes along that I really just have to pause and admire. And there’s one DIY feature in particular that’s so unique, I couldn’t help but write about it.

This Bungalow’s Striking Fireplace Is So Green, It’s Almost Black
“The living room was our first project,” Maudie Francek says about her and her husband Ronnie’s 1928 Milwaukee home. Because the couple was tackling the whole home room by room, they needed at least one space away from the renovation messiness in other parts of the house.“We knew it would be the space where we spent most of our time, so we wanted to create a comfortable landing spot to relax in as we tackled the rest of the house,” Maudie shares.

A “Sea of Natural Maple Cabinetry” Became an Unexpectedly Colorful Kitchen
Wisconsin-based interior designer Emily Winters of Peabody’s Interiors was tasked with an all-too-classic mission: An outdated kitchen from the late 1990s to early 2000s was in need of a modern makeover — and a much more functional layout.“It was a sea of natural maple cabinetry with sponge-painted walls and Corian countertops,” Winters says of the original kitchen.

I Traveled Iceland with a Paper Map Instead of My Phone’s GPS — It Was the Most Fun I’ve Had in Years
A few years ago, I booked my first trip to Iceland. I was excited to soak in the country’s legendary hot springs, hike under the midnight sun, and explore the black sand beaches and ice caves. I chose Hotel Ranga on Iceland’s South Coast as my base. The boutique, family-run hotel offered a range of unusual amenities, including a house astronomer, northern lights wake-up calls, and hot tubs fed by thermal hot springs that were open year-round. Another unexpected option?

Does the $250 Hatch Sleep Clock Actually Track Your Z’s? Here’s My Honest Review
I’ve had a Hatch alarm clock for a few years. I am a big fan of the clock — I love that at 9:30 every night, it starts emitting calming sounds and lights to let me know it’s almost time for bed. I love that it keeps me off my phone first thing in the morning. I love the white noise options that I can change up every night, if I want to. It’s helped me sleep a bit better, and I appreciate it for that.

The Best Linen Sheets, According to Someone Who Never Sleeps with the AC On
Everyone has preferences when it comes to their bedding and sleep. I hate sleeping with the air conditioning on, and I will do whatever I can to avoid it — even in the dead heat of summer. I much prefer a steady, beating fan. I am also firmly, forever, deeply team top sheet. (You can pry my top sheet from my cold, dead hands.) I also hate percale and sateen — I hear over and over that they are the most cooling sheets that exist, but I really dislike the feeling of them on my skin.
