Unusual Exterior Paint Color Combos That Actually Look Really Great
When I was growing up in Lafayette, Louisiana, my family took a lot of trips to Mississippi to see my grandparents, and on the way back, I remember, there was this one lavender house, right by the interstate, that always caught my eye. This one pale, pale purple home, in a sea of beiges, seemed almost magical.

Jennifer’s backyard was overgrown and her deck had seen better days. Dabney’s Bare Backyard Goes From Lifeless to Next Level
Previously I wrote about my bare backyard when it was a wasteland of dog poop, weeds and sorrow. Today I’m showing you my new and improved outdoor space, which is now a low maintenance dream. Two thirds of the new backyard is covered with an expansive composite deck. The other section is a rectangular area of gravel with a firepit: Composite Deck: Probably the most ground-breaking — yet largely unsung — feature of the new and improved backyard is the new platform deck.

Small Outdoor Space? Consider “Square Foot Gardening”
There’s nothing quite so satisfying as growing your own food—and nothing quite so frustrating as being a would-be gardener with a too-small outdoor space. I have known this pain myself, so I was particularly intrigued when Dabney, our Projects Editor, told me about Square Foot Gardening, a very efficient technique for growing things you can eat. Could this be the perfect way to grow a lot of veggies in just a little bit of space?

Before & After: Replacing Icky Carpet With Wood Laminate
October was a ridiculously busy month for me. I welcomed three sets of out of town guests, as well as renovating the studio over my garage. Earlier this week, I posted about the bathroom. The final project was replacing the dingy, smelly carpet with wood laminate.Though the previous tenant had the two year old carpet cleaned before vacating, it had an overwhelming musty odor, an attempted repair where an iron had burned the carpet, and the seams were coming apart.

Before & After: An Updated 1940’s Kitchen
While having a “green” kitchen is a desirable trait these days, it had a whole different meaning in the 1940’s. This kitchen was a total disaster when owner Dorie bought her 1916 bungalow in Mesa, Arizona. The builder-grade cabinets and oven were fixed awkwardly in the center of the room while a huge custom wine rack took up the entire back wall — perhaps because it required serious wine goggles to look at that room without cringing? A key element of renovating a room is knowing when to say when. If you have a limited budget or limited time then the most helpful thing you can do is to be realistic about what you can achieve. This is especially true when you purchase a house that is a ‘fixer-upper,’ because then you are in danger of succumbing to project fatigue, when there is so much to do in every direction that it is difficult to focus on just one thing.
