This tallboy dresser had been relegated to a garage to store junk, but Polly saw some potential. Inspired by the beach, this dresser got a wavy makeover. From Polly: I got this beat up old tallboy from a lovely lady on Gumtree. She used it for junk in her garage. I kew the draws and feet would make it a really interesting piece to upcycle and I have been wanting to try a really different paint technique for a while.

Sarah wanted this cedar-lined chest to serve as extra seating in her music room. Instead of simply upholstering the top, though, she was inspired by a White Stripes song to try something a little more advanced. Here’s how a $10 Craigslist find became a cat box: From Tina: I live in a small apartment in Chicago that has no room for a litter box, so the idea for this project came from one too many dinner parties where my guests had to look at the catbox while eating at the dining room table. I wanted a furniture unit that would cover the catbox and also fit in with the decor of my dining room.

Kaitlyn bought these chairs as a medium for her art show. The fabric she chose is definitely a work of art! From Kaitlyn: I bought these chairs from a local thrift store in Santa Fe, although they originally came from a hotel on the plaza. I bought them to reupholster and put in my college senior art show, where I am sharing a space with 8 other students. I wanted to create something that would be stick out, and also incorporate my skills outside of traditional studio art practices.

Kirby dug Grandpa’s old hanging chair out of the garage, and it had seen better days. A clear gem despite its condition, Kirby put in the work and now it looks better than ever: From Kirby: This chair was my grandfather’s and it was tucked away in the garage for years after he passed until I dug it out this winter. The rattan was really dry and the frame, covered in rust. But with a lot of scrubbing, oiling, and sanding (to the frame, not the chair) this guy really started to shine!

Meghan got these chairs from her grandparents, and while they didn’t look like much, family photos revealed their vintage charm hidden under 80s upholstery. She decided to have their original style brought back, but with a twist. From Meghan: I inherited a pair of chairs from my grandparents when they were downsizing. The chairs were from the 1950s and I had several photos of my mother and Aunt crawling all over them when they were little.

Allison scored this dresser for $25. While she loved the detail, the faux wood wasn’t doing it for her. After some paint, now those details really pop. From Allison: I spray painted the handles gold using Rustoleum’s Gold Metallic spray paint. This project was an easy task and was complete in just one afternoon. When Tiffany Napper bought this New Orleans shotgun in 2010, she had major work cut out for her. The house – previously owned by a 93-year-old woman who had been born in the house and lived there until she died – had drop ceilings, faux wood paneling, and dirty wall-to-wall carpeting. The narrow 1400-square-foot structure had a small dark kitchen, one tiny bathroom, and four small bedrooms sandwiched together without a hallway.

Always a little befuddled about how to style your coffee table so that it looks good but not too cluttered? So that it makes the rest of your living room feel great but also functions? There are six styling “formulas” you can stick to that are guaranteed to always look good. Mentally divide your rectangular coffee table into three parts. In each part, center a design element within. Make each element different, but keep them similar in height.

Amanda and Chris Covo spent eight months renovating their 1920s bungalow, also known as the Sallie Johnson House. When Fernando and Maximiliano bought a classic house in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Boca, the building had been abandoned for years and every room was begging to be renovated. With a very minimal budget they decided to redo every room themselves. When we bought the house the living and dining room were two separate rooms, and every wall had a different color or wallpaper. It’s impossible to believe, but at one point, these chairs were like two perfect plums. We first discovered them in NYC’s Chelsea Flea Market, one cold Sunday morning, in the early ’90s when my husband (then boyfriend) and I were recovering from a live Jane’s Addiction hangover. The flea market was a place you wandered through when you had nothing better to do and little energy to do it.

This Philadelphia row home came with many enviable features when Matt and Anne Thomas bought it. Stunning architecture. Tons of space. All that natural light. The one thing they didn’t love was the home’s extremely red-toned cherry wood floors. But, the floors had just been re-done and were nice in every other regard. As the House Tour editor here at Apartment Therapy, looking at a wide range of homes is a requirement (and a delight!). And while many of those spaces I see online, I still have a penchant for flipping through the pages of a good coffee table design book for inspiration.

The window in this bedroom is absolutely dreamy, but the space below it was a bit of a waste—until inspiration struck, and one room became two. Here’s the scoop on the under-window situation: Before we had two slightly tatty built-in cabinets either side of a Velux window. They didn’t look great, and the space in the middle was wasted. It became a catch-all for junk. Because the home is rented, though, we couldn’t make any permanent changes.

When Oriane and her husband Christopher moved into their large Chicago home, a lot of things needed updating (as these before photos prove). On a pretty tight budget, they ended up tackling many of the DIY projects of the remodel themselves. Everything from fresh paint to a new kitchen makes their condo beautiful. Though every room is lovely today, the formal dining room is one of the most impressive spaces.

This home on Chicago’s Gold Coast was originally built in 1892, but was transformed into condominiums in 1978. This particularl unit—a two-bedroom space with one and a half baths—hadn’t been touched since. Covered in old carpet (even in the kitchen, shudder) and in need of a lot of work, Kira Cole wasn’t deterred by the design task at hand when she purchased the space.

This tall, vintage, secondhand dresser needed a little wood filler and a lot of love, so its new owner gave it all that and a gorgeous coat of paint that totally transformed its look. The new owner of this dresser, who bought it on Craigslist for $75, described it as “a glossy cherry wood… ick!” It did, however, have nice lines, antique charm, and plenty of refined details without too much old-fashioned folderol.

I found a gorgeous mustardy yellow vintage suitcase, which I upcycled into a fabulous side table. Not only that, I added extra character to the case with some vintage luggage labels. I feel fairly confidant in my ability to spot an IKEA hack, but this project had me doing a double take. Christina’s project is not a casual, pick up and craft DIY, but it’s so perfectly executed that we had to share!

Lindsay thought she found a “sturdy, but out-of-style wood coffee table” at her local thrift store—but when she got home, she realized she’d been fooled. The ugly veneer made this piece impossible to restore, paint, or reshape. “At that point, I wanted little to do with the table,” Lindsay says. But she’d already dropped $15, so she decided to figure out some solution.And it’s a good thing she kept trying.

Lindi wasn’t sure what to do with this awkward space on the side of her living room. “It didn’t really have a function and was largely unused,” she says. But soon she found her vision: Her home lacked a community work area where her kids could hunker down over homework and Lindi could edit images for her blog. Black vertical shiplap anchors the space, and floating wood shelves in a dark stain add depth—and match the desk.

Katherine‘s master bathroom was filled with wasted space, with a wall of closets and a separate room for the toilet and tub contributing to the cramped floor plan. In order to reveal this space’s true potential, “we pretty much had to start from scratch,” Katherine says. “It was in need of a major facelift.” They started by ripping out everything: unnecessary walls; the dark, gloomy builder-grade cabinetry; even the toilet.

Erin‘s small, square master bathroom was cramped and outdated, with brown tiles and a builder-grade sink that offered no inspiration. But a trip to Italy did: “I kept talking about how I envisioned a master bathroom that looked like it belonged in a boutique hotel in Italy, and my partner surprised me with a vacation to one of my favorite cities in the world! Cat and her boyfriend, Brian, seriously lucked out: His family’s hunting lodge in southern Utah is the perfect weekend retreat. But over time, the cabin has transformed from a yearly hunting haven for the boys to a family vacation home. “Naturally, it was in need of some decor and interior design,” Cat says. Cat and Brian’s upstairs bedroom had an awkward slanted ceiling and standard white wall.
