Before & After: Step Up, The Marimekko Edition
If you’re going to go bold, go bold. Claire took her old beige staircase and turned it into a spunky, funky and printed space that greets you as soon as you walk in the door. From Claire: The first thing you used to see when you opened my front door was some steep victorian stairs crying out for a transformation. I got rid of the boring beige carpet that was just a dust and dirt magnet and brightened them up with a touch of Marimekko.

A Colorful Fixer-Upper Full of Fabulous Finds
Name: Phoebe Location: Charlotte, North Carolina My husband and I one day decided, “hey lets start looking at houses” we didn’t realize that we were going to find the house we loved a few weeks later, bid on it, win it, and then begin remodeling it. We found this 1200 square foot foreclosure in Charlotte and without even seeing it in person, we told our realtor that we wanted to place a bid on it. The annoying part?

Things to Avoid When Renovating…by Someone Who Has Done It a Dozen Times
The Hollywood Hills castle is the 12th home we’ve designed for ourselves. Our first project was a townhouse in Chelsea NYC in 1996. Along the way we’ve been pretty proud of most of the homes we’ve done, but in hindsight we’ve made many mistakes — due to inexperience, to budget, to trends — you name it.

7 Super Common Dishwasher Mistakes You’ll Want to Stop Making, Right Now
I grew up without a dishwasher in the house, so nobody really ever taught me how the whole thing was supposed to work. After a few years on my own in dishwasher-equipped apartments, I’ve got the big lessons down (it only takes one occurrence of covering your entire kitchen floor in 2-foot-deep suds to know that dish soap and dishwasher detergent are not the same thing). But there are lots of finer points of machine-washing life that even experienced homekeepers might not know.

What Kitchen Style Best Suits Your Design Taste?
Determining a personal style for any room is a balance of performance and aesthetics, but in a laboring room like the kitchen, the relationship becomes especially important. Mine is casually utilitarian: a playground for the (aspiring) baker in me and a workstation for my love of Sunday-evening meal prep. Protect Your Modesty at the Beach this Summer with a Bathing Machine
To modern eyes, the bathing suits of the past may seem excessively, even hilariously, modest. But more than 100 years ago, these getups were scandalous. So scandalous, in fact, that clever folks in the 18th century figured out a way for female bathers to get into the water without ever being seen in their bathing suit at all. It all involved an ingenious little device called the bathing machine.

Before & After: A Beautiful Billy Bookcase Hack You Can Try At Home
One of my absolute favorite elements of our living room design is the IKEA Billy bookcase hack that TJ Breil of Slab Woodworking rescued. How to Achieve Brooklyn Cool (Literally)
Located on the third (top) floor of a 100-year old Brooklyn brownstone, my story is not unique by any means.
