Molly Prentiss, a novelist, and Forrest Lewinger, a ceramicist for Workaday Handmade, live in and work from this airy, modernized Victorian house in Brooklyn.
Being awoken by the sun is actually good for you, but there are times when darkening a room aids in sleep especially for napping children, shift workers or others with non traditional sleep schedules and for blocking artificial night time light such as from a streetlamp. Blackout curtains also are energy saving (keeping heat from escaping in the winter and the hot sun from heating up your room in the summer) and help block or muffle outdoor noise.
Is there a twelve-step program for addiction to throw pillows? Maybe we’ll start one. It’s gotten pretty bad. In fact, we’ve had to place a moratorium on them for the calendar year (here we come, 2010!).
Name: Jessica Location: Edinburgh, Scotland, UK I live in a 2 bedroom Georgian flat in Edinburgh, built around 1890. The flat is 1200 square feet and I completely renovated and refurbished it in 2013 so that I could have it exactly the way I wanted it.
Describing their style as "cozy pink pistachio desert oasis," Zach and Libby have used IKEA shoe storage in unconventional ways to help make their tiny rental apartment work.
Choosing grey paint is a cinch. You only have a few…thousand choices. Do you want a light grey, medium grey, charcoal grey? A brown-ish grey, blue-ish grey, black-ish grey? It’s enough to throw your hands up and just keep the color you’ve got. Or, check out some real homes with grey walls and see what colors and brands they used as a starting point for your own paint project.
So of course, since this is an attempt to create a collection of bedrooms that are ‘romantic’, it’s worth defining what in the world we mean by romantic anyway.
Rust is a quiet, subtle things that sneaks up on your pans, pots, servingware and even some furniture. The weekend’s a perfect time to rid your metal of this pesky unsightly element. And guess what? We’ve had freezing temperatures in San Francisco this week, which is way worse than getting them in, say, New York. Our windows are old and drafty and not insulated for this kind of weather. In fact, I’ve lived in two apartments with no heat at all. It’s not uncommon here, where temps don’t tend to dip below 50. But this season, my Chilean boyfriend turned me on to the hot water bottle. I hadn’t used one since I was a kid with the flu.
Taylored DIY transformed this rental apartment with elements like faux marble counter covering, paint and supplies for painting cabinets, and thrifted/yard sale furniture finds.
To truly master all the skills of maintaining a home is an exhaustive list and frankly, out of reach for many people. But even if knowing everything about home repair and DIY is not on your list of life goals, there are still a few skills worth knowing. This year, consider finally mastering a few from this list of ten — they’re skills that will come in handy in just about any home and not that difficult to learn!
Gardening is one of my favorite hobbies, but it can also be expensive when you start buying lots of plants and pots. What if you could double, triple, even quadruple the number of plants you currently have without spending a dime? If you have a little bit of time on your hands, along with a lot of patience, you can do just that. Let’s dig into cacti and succulent propagation!
My current flat has a dishwasher, which, after 5+ years of living in London without one, felt like a huge luxury when I moved in a year ago. In my naivety, I thought I’d become so used to and efficient at washing my own dishes that I’d barely use the thing. Yeah, you can guess how long that attitude lasted. The following statement pretty much sums up how my flatmate and I view doing the dishes: if something fits into the dishwasher, it’s going into the dishwasher.
Do you love where you live almost as much as you love your life partner? Are you single this year and looking for a hot date with an emotionally available living space? This year, forget the chocolates and corny Valentine’s Day cards and spend some time treating your home to a little lovin’ this February 14th. It’s not just about greeting your guests with a little bit of seasonal cheer. It’s about greeting yourself, too, after a long day at work or away from home.
Designer Gina De Pasquale renovated this Las Vegas residence that needed a little updating throughout. Her work is most impressive in the bathroom where she did a great a job of mixing high and low pieces, all while staying true to the mid-century aesthetic.
Whether it’s a piece of furniture you found for free on the side of the road, a hand-me-down you’ve had for ages, something you found in a really affordable big-box store or just something that feels cheap looking to you, there are some successful things you can DIY to make a piece of furniture look a lot more expensive (and personal!) to you. Splurge on some seriously rad hardware like pulls or handles and remove the less impressive ones that the furniture piece came to you with.
Sharing a home with another person (or persons) isn’t always easy — and conflicts tend to occur, especially when it comes to cleaning chores. There’s a way you can cut down on disagreements over cleaning tasks in the future, though, and it’s actually a really easy step: Have everyone who lives in the home work together to officially decide when a room is considered “clean.
I am giddy over my new pretty, pretty pantry shelves. Just days ago, they were a hodgepodge of mismatched boards and faux-wood stickers. It’s amazing what a little paint and the old switcharoo will do! When we started working on our new house, I was pleased to find a set of shelves in the pantry. They were nothing to write home about, but they would hold things and they were free and they were fine.
If you’re preparing to host Thanksgiving dinner this year, you may be feeling like this week is the silence before the storm. Rather than let nerves build to a day-of crescendo, here are some things you can check off of that Thanksgiving to-do list a full week in advance, freeing up time on the holiday itself: Make a shopping list. Depending upon what’s on your list, you might be able to even get your shopping out of the way now, before stores are overcrowded.
It seems that, increasingly, it’s becoming the norm for kids to have their own bedrooms, especially if there’s adequate space for it. But what if you have two rooms, two kids, and no playroom? Is it a better use of the space to have the kids share a bedroom? In my experience, young children don’t feel much of a need for a private bedroom. They would rather have ample space to play.

When my husband and I moved into our renovated row home in 2011, this second-floor hallway was pretty much a blank slate. Almost two years later, we’ve made one major change and brought needed personality into the space.Neither of us liked the carpet; after living with it for a year and a half, we impulsively removed it in April. Our home is over a hundred years old, and we knew the original heart pine was mostly intact underneath.
If you had the choice between paying $13.00 or $1.50 for the exact same product, I don’t think there would be any hesitation, you’d opt for the cheaper option. That’s what got me inspired to make my very own household cleaner for electronics after my name brand cleaner finally ran out this weekend…It was really my better half who got me wondering about a no-chemical, affordable DIY cleaning solution to replace the more expensive store bought option.
Is there any finer excuse to have friends over than dining together al fresco under the stars? Yes…sending out invites for dinner and a movie, screened in your very own backyard (tip: match the movie to the meal)!
You’ve gotta have some vision to see the potential for an old plastic fire truck to become a special piece of decor. And that’s exactly what Jasmine brought to this toy when when she turned it into a modern, artful lamp.Jasmine from Jasmine Orchard Styling was inspired on a recent trip to Amsterdam by a large industrial crane. When she found a large, well-loved old toy fire truck with a moving ladder, she saw its potential as the foundation for a unique table lamp.
Piet Mondrian used reds, yellows, blues, and blacks. Donald Judd’s palette has included green, pink, and orange. Carl Andre relied on the colors of specific materials like wood and metals. And yet somehow, the term “minimalism” today calls to mind an image of a pure, clean, and orderly space with white as the dominant color. Why, despite seeing color everywhere, do we still tend to associate the minimal and the modern with whiteness?
I’m in my fourth year of writing for Apartment Therapy, and I’ve been an Apartment Therapy/The Kitchn reader for even longer. Like all of you longtime folks, I’ve definitely found many tips from our sites that have changed the way I operate, while others that I was so gung-ho on—projects and tips that I was sure I’d get right to work on—have been languishing on the island of I’m-never-going-to-actually-do-this for years.

Many of us probably have an idea of what will be in anyone’s bedroom. A bed, nightstands, some clothes storage. Maybe a lamp for reading. But sometimes the most amazing bedrooms are the ones with unexpected elements! Consider including some of these (admittedly outrageous, but totally worth the effort) design ideas for your bedroom. You don’t just have to use a plain old table as a nightstand.
If you are the sort of person who aspires to own a large number of champagne flutes, you are probably also the sort of person who enjoys entertaining at home. In that case, you’ll understand that the best glassware is the kind you don’t need to worry about: The kind where, if a friend who has enjoyed a little too much bubbly knocks one off the table, you can just clean it up and good-naturedly assure them it’s not a big deal.
Q: Hi there, my husband and I were looking for a new couch; after months of scouring the Internet, reading reviews, etc., we settled on the Ikea Karlstad. Turns out it’s being discontinued! I’m really surprised since it’s a bestseller and favorite. Can you point us toward a sectional that is similar? Thanks! -Sent by Eileenteg Editor: Oh, man, what a blow for the affordable-sofa-buying public! I hope IKEA has something even better (and cheaper? and higher-quality?
This ruddy red (marsala?) room color is quite nice, but perhaps not entirely suited to its 2-year-old occupant, Vera. Her mother, Petra Probstner, took a big risk and painted murals on all four walls mimicking the urban landscape of Chicago that lay outside the windows. The result is, frankly, breathtaking. Amazing, right?? As you can see in the progress photo below, she taped the mural off and then filled it in with grey, mint green and peachy-pink paint. Thanks for sharing, Petra Probstner!
Stencils are a fun and economic way to create a pattern or duplicate an image over and over again. They can be used on a vast array of items from rugs, and garden containers, to walls and ceilings. You can purchase them pre-made, but if you’re looking for something one-of-a-kind your best bet is to make it yourself. There are quite a few options when it comes to picking out the material for your plate.
