Name: Marie Provence, my two cats Howard and Alan Location: Atlanta, Georgia Size: 891 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, owned My home is a two-bed, one-bath, renovated ranch-style home in the Jefferson Park neighborhood outside of Atlanta, Georgia. My two cats Howard and Alan are my fluffy housemates. I enjoy my house because it is perfect for entertaining with two French doors that open to a large patio in the back, and kitchen/dining/living room areas that flow seamlessly into one another.

Name: Sara Blomberg and dog Gus Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn Size: 550 square feet Years lived in: 6 months, renting I live with my puggle, Gus, in this apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. When I looked for an apartment, the first thing on my list was light, lots and lots of light. This apartment faces Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg and I have a corner unit.

Name: Annabel Joy, her husband (Kean Duffey), and their French bulldog (Mona) Location: Boston, Massachusetts Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: 3 years, owned Your eyes don’t deceive you: This is a SECOND house call of the same home. But, it appears that the first post’s headline (A DIY Designer & Chronic Rearranger’s Boston Condo) was particularly appropriate, for Annabel has submitted some more photos and the space already looks pretty different.

Name: Sue Prue Location: Berkeley, California Size: 270 square feet Years lived in: 3 weeks, owned My boyfriend and I had been talking about moving in together since we met. His home, however, is small—and we needed more space to accommodate all of our things. Since he already owned a house we decided the easiest thing would be to fix up his dilapidated garage in Berkeley. It was during this process (and after finding one too many rats) we decided the garage was ultimately a tear-down.

Name: Nikki Darling, my three cats and dog! Location: Highland Park — Los Angeles, California Size: 450 square feet Years lived in: 10 years, renting I moved into my home in 2008 to attend Cal Arts. I had lived in New York previously since 2002 where I went to undergrad and stayed afterward. I lived in a punk dump with a rotating list of roommates and pets. I wanted to live alone in my own home. I found this back house with a yard in my budget and haven’t left since.

They emphasized flow and perception of space over actual square footage, and tried to design the home to perfectly match their lifestyle and habits.

Name: Vanessa Combe, my partner Blake, and our cat Marlon Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Size: 500 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, renting Apartment hunting in Toronto is a miserable affair. The city gets more expensive every year and the lack of housing—especially affordable housing—means that everyone is fighting tooth and nail for a place to call home.

Name: Pratiksha Tandon, husband, and 17-month-old daughter Location: Foster City, California Size: 1,350 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting I am an architect and an interior designer married to a data scientist currently living in the Bay Area, California. We moved to the Bay Area from Connecticut a year ago to be close to family. The thing that made us fall in love with this house were the big gorgeous windows on all three sides with beautiful views of green outside.

Name: Chelsea Farmer, husband, son and five rescue animals Location: Owensboro, Kentucky Size: 4366 square feet Years lived in: 3 years, owned Remember the opening scenes of Disney’s “Tangled”? Rapunzel created a whole world in her little space with colors and inspirations. I’d like to think that if she came over, she would instantly understand my decorating perspective.

Name: Clayton Brant, husband Keith and two little boys, Fischer and Ford Location: Carlisle, Pennsylvania Size: 2022 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned We found a four-acre property right outside of town with beautiful trees in a very quiet neighborhood, and built a house on a very strict budget. We were committed to keeping our footprint relatively small (around 2,000 square feet), so we designed the interior of the house to use space very efficiently and functionally.

Name: Annie Robertson, husband, two sons (ages 4 and 7) Location: Portland, Oregon Size: 250 square feet Years lived in: 2 months, owned We are in the planning and permitting process of building a house from scratch, and our family faced an unexpected job loss. Rather than give up our lot and move out of inner Portland, where housing costs are ever-rising and we would be hard pressed to get into again, we decided to remodel a two-bedroom fifth wheel trailer! We are stationary on our lot.

Name: Erin Love, husband, two daughters, and two dogs Location: Russiaville, Indiana Size: 2,300 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, owned Our home is set back on a semi-wooded lot in the country. I would describe it as a cozy cottage. It was built in 1977 and has so many cool “older” quirks that won me over instantly. I am drawn to earth-toned colors and pretty textures and patterns.

Name: Marieke Rijksen, husband and two children (11 and 6) Location: Haarlem, The Netherlands Size: 2,400 square feet Years lived in: 4 months, owned Our home was built about 130 years ago on the canals of Haarlem. It features gorgeous ornate original high ceilings and many of the historical features have been preserved. When we bought it late 2017, it needed a bit of love and some extra space. The kitchen was tiny and the second floor was not very practical with a pitched roof.

Name: Ashley Hosmer, my husband Matty, and our dog Mia Location: Los Angeles, California Size: 1,000 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years, renting My husband Matty and I moved into our one-bedroom fourplex with our dog Mia about a year and a half ago. My husband saw the listing within an hour of it being posted, was the first to see the apartment, and made an offer without me even seeing it. He knew it was good and would go fast.

Name: Samantha Blair, husband, 3 children, and 4 pets Location: Rolling Hills Estates, California Size: 2,500 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned My husband, Ron, and I live here with our three children and four pets. Our very first home purchase, we’ve been here a little over a year. It was a dream home purchase and love at first sight for both of us. It was built in 1960 by an amateur architect for himself and his family.

Name: Janelle Burnett, husband George, daughter Sienna (2 years old) Carson (3 months old), and two fur babies Lola and Marilyn Location: Mission Viejo, California Size: 2,000 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, owned My husband and I bought our home over two years ago when I was pregnant with our daughter Sienna. We could only afford a fixer upper so we gutted it and redid almost everything on our own. Remodeling a house while pregnant is something I wouldn’t recommend; it is no joke.

Name: Abby Fuller Location: Williamsburg — Brooklyn, New York Size: 500 square feet Years lived in: 3 months, renting I work in developer relations for Amazon, so I’m on the road a lot! I wanted something that felt homey and comfortable, without requiring a ton of maintenance (i.e., no plants that would die if I left them for 10 days. I killed a lot of them experimenting with this before I finally asked my mom for help!

Name: Kendra Vicken, my dog, Jane, and my hedgehog, Penny Location: Phoenix, Arizona Size: 490 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned My home is a 490-square-foot condo in downtown Phoenix. It’s my first (and only) purchased home and I love it to pieces. The location is ideal, it holds all the necessities and it feels like an oasis amidst the hustle and bustle. Inside its four walls lives my dog Jane, my hedgehog Penny, and myself! This is my favorite view of my home.

Name: Sarah Drinkwater, my husband, two cats and, soon, a baby! Location: London, UK Size: 2000 square feet Years lived in: 2.5 years, owned When we outgrew our old flat, my husband Stu and I found this place. The last owner had lived here for 50 years so it needed updating, but we loved the bare bones—especially how light the back of the house was.

Name: Rosalind Frudd, my partner James Location: Fulham, London, UK Size: 450 square feet Years lived in: 9 months, owned James and I met at university over eight years ago and this is our second flat together in London, so we had a trial run at decorating together and this flat really reflects both of our tastes. Having lived in a studio before, we were very excited to have separate rooms and a bit more space to entertain!

Like the jewelry boxes of toy treasures from childhood, this little box of a house holds all of this "curated maximalist's" favorite things.

Name: Rachel Spikula Location: Dupont Circle — Washington, DC Size: 355 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, renting Landing this place was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I looked at a few apartments in big buildings, but they didn’t feel right. I wanted to find something more distinctive in a smaller building and began looking for condos to rent. I almost overlooked the listing for this unit.

Name: Jennifer DeBrincat, my husband, Brett, and our whippet, Jon Location: Everson, Washington Size: 1,032 square feet Years lived in: 24 years, owned I share our home with my husband and our 7-year-old whippet, Jon. We make and sell farmhouse tables and benches. We all need and crave peace and tranquility so I try and decorate with simplicity in mind. I try and keep our home consistent throughout with a fairly neutral color scheme.

Name: Jamie Nuccio, my cat, Ruby Location: West Loop — Chicago, Illinois Size: 900 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned As soon as I walked into this space, I had a strong gut feeling that it was “the one” (it was only the second place that I toured when I started my condo search!).

Name: Adrian Young, husband, two children (ages 4 and 5) Location: Pagosa Springs, Colorado Size: 2800 square feet on seven acres Years lived in: 1 year, owned We dreamed about creating a space to cultivate curiosity, celebrate play with our kids and immerse in the great outdoors. We believed we weren’t the only family yearning to disconnect from frenzy and focus on simplicity, presence and intentional connection.

Name: Erin Conway, Matt, son Finnegan, daughter Tallula, and dogs Cashew and Stewart Location: Pacific Grove, California Size: 2,000 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, owned We live in the town of Pacific Grove California. A tiny beach town on the central coast. They film Big Little Lies here and in the surrounding areas so we’re kind of a big deal haha! The house is ’70s modern architecture and has loads of quirky angles.

Name: Holli Zollinger, my son Lorenzo and two kittens Zizi and Zara. Location: Moab, Utah Size: 729 square feet Years lived in: 5 months, owned My name is Holli and I live in this 729-square-foot desert adobe home with my son Lorenzo and two kittens Zizi and Zara. I’m a full-time working textile/surface designer and artist of 26 years.

Name: Megan Miller, my husband Jesse and our two daughters, Navy and June Location: Alliance, Ohio Size: 1,250 square feet Years lived in: 4.5 years, owned I share my home with my husband Jesse and our two daughters, Navy (3) and June (1). I’m a homebody at heart and spend most of my time at home taking care of our girls, so I wanted it to be a place I truly enjoyed being in. I love antiques and vintage home goods because I feel they bring warmth, charm, and history to a home.

Name: Nicola Wilhelm and my rescue cat, Oscar Location: Tremont Neighborhood — Cleveland, Ohio Size: 1,500 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years, renting I am a lifelong vintage collector, soon-to-be shop owner (Helm Collective coming to the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland this summer). When I look around my home, I can honestly count the number of pieces that I purchased new on one hand.

Name: Katie Varela, husband and three kids Location: Lake Forest, California Size: 1,700 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned My husband, Jon, and I live in this three-bedroom home with our three kids, ages 13, 11, and 9. We moved here a year and a half ago from a neighboring city and a house that was under 1,000 square feet, so this 1,700-square-foot home feels like a mansion to us!

Name: Marlene Fao, her partner Keith and two Bengal cats, Leopold and Enso Location: Wimbledon — London, United Kingdom Years lived in: 1 year, owned Originally from France, Marlene has been living in London since 2010, and bought this Edwardian Maisonette home last year with her partner Keith, a civil engineer.

Name: Ashley Pennington Location: Roosevelt Historic Neighborhood — Phoenix, Arizona Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting I moved into this rental to reignite my passion for interior design. This duplex is in the Historic Roosevelt District of Downtown Phoenix. I was so excited to come in and show myself what I was capable of designing. The home was built in the 1920s, has original floors, windows, cabinets and bathroom fixtures.

Name: Sarah Lyon and her roommate Carrie Location: Dupont Circle — Washington, DC Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: Almost a year My roommate, Carrie, and I found our place on Craigslist after doing an extensive search of rowhouse apartments in DC. We were about ready to give up when we found what was truly a hidden gem—a place that was affordable, had equal-sized bedrooms and two bathrooms, and even came with a roof deck. We snagged it right away!

Name: Sharon and Dan and pup Ruby Location: Long Island City – Queens, New York Size: 1,020 square feet Years lived in: 7 months, owned We’ve been living in our condo for about seven months! We moved here from Manhattan because we wanted more space to grow a family (we’re expecting a baby girl at the end of August!). Our condo is just over 1,000 square feet with two bedrooms, two baths, dine-in kitchen, dining room, and in-unit washer/dryer.

Name: David Shade, wife Lindsay Key and two small children, Zev, almost four, and Frieda, a year and a half. Location: Bed Stuy, Brooklyn Size: 2,100 square feet Years lived in: 4 years, owned Lindsay and I have an interior design firm, Key + Shade, on the third floor of our home. We love to cook, eat, entertain, make art, and garden. I am a bit of a neat freak and we never have enough storage, so we built closets and cabinetry to clear the clutter.

Name: Taiyo Kitagawa and Lebowski the cat Location: Williamsburg — Brooklyn, NY Size: 750 square feet Years lived in: 10 months, renting I grew up in Fuji, Japan and moved to Switzerland when I was 9 years old. I moved to the USA for college, so my apartment contains design influences from around the world. I’m an art director now and my personal style comes through in the space, from the art on the walls to knickknacks.

Name: Lindsay Mills, husband, two young girls and two cats, Penny and Marty. Location: Sherwood Park — Alberta, Canada Size: 1,972 square feet Years lived in: 9 years, owned We purchased our home in 2009. It sat on the market for months due to the overwhelming amount of golden oak, Wedgwood blue, and peachy beige. Because it was built in 1992, it was well built, and had a great layout. When we got possession, I began painting.

Name: Tanya and her family Location: Maplewood, NJ Size: 4,000 square feet Years lived in: 13 years, owned Tanya, who runs the popular Instagram account @houseofsixinteriors, has owned this with her husband Carlos for 13 years. The couple shares the large 1906 Craftsman style house with their four kids: Dylan (12), Emerson (10), Beckett (8), and Peyton (5). This is our living room. The place where we all gather at the end of the day—under blankets and catch up, laugh, watch TV, play games.

Name: Chuck Jones Location: South Pasadena, California Size: 900 square feet Years Lived In: 3 years, renting Covered in stucco and overgrown vegetation, this pre-fab piece of history sat unknown to locals and lost to time until purchased in 2006 by Sergio Santino. Since uncovering this mid-century marvel—built by renowned industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss and architect Edward Larrabee Barnes—Sergio’s childhood friend Chuck Jones has resided here.

Name: Ashley, my husband, our three-year-old son Don and two dogs (Derek and Lucy) Location: Miami, Florida Size: 2,000 square feet Years lived in: 6 months, renting My name is Ashley [of At Home With Ashley] and I live in this rental home with my husband Preston and our 3-year-old son, Don. We have two dogs (both are Cavalier King Charles Spaniels).

Location: Wilmington, North Carolina Size: 2,500 square feet Years lived in: 2 years, owned My name is Taylor and I own a greeting card company named Tay Ham. I live in my dream house with my husband Ross (who owns a tech company called Connected Investors) and our little baby girl, Seven, who will be a year old this June.

Name: Jessie Ruane, boyfriend Ryan, and Dusty the pup Location: Prospect Heights — Brooklyn, NY Size: 1000 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting I share my Prospect Heights loft with my boyfriend, Ryan and our puppy, Dusty (@simply.dusty). When we moved in, we quickly realized filling a 1,000 square foot (estimated) loft was going to be expensive. Since I don’t have the luxury of filling my apartment with West Elm (ahh I wish!) I started researching elsewhere.

Name: Melissa Smrekar and a Maine Coon rescue cat named Gwynnie Location: Park Cities — Dallas, Texas Size: 1,200 square feet Years lived in: 8 months, renting A fourth-generation Dallasite, the rest of my family now lives on our working ranch in the Texas Hill Country. Everything in the house is brown. My city mouse apartment, then, is the complete opposite. It’s quirky, colorful and bold, with no apologies for its femininity.

Name: Ly Nguyen and her boyfriend Location: Amsterdam, Zuid Size: 850 square feet Years lived in: 5 months, owned This is the first house that I bought and actually live in it so I wanted to make it as cozy and as personal as possible. I travel a bit for work so when I return to Amsterdam, I want to be in a quiet area but still within 10-15 minutes cycling from good restaurants and social happenings. This house checked all the boxes.

Name: Katie Avram and Butterscotch the cat Location: Bankview — Calgary, Alberta Size: 700 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, owned I bought my condo a year ago and went to town on personalizing it from the beige/tan snorefest it was. I had been looking to buy a condo for over a year and had seen dozens in person that were definitely nice, but just weren’t me. The windows and view sold me on the place from the listing photos and I called my realtor right away to arrange a viewing.

Name: Genevieve Tinsley Fox, her husband, and six-month-old daughter Location: The Heights — Houston, Texas Size: 165 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years, owned Gennie works in commercial real estate and her husband Matt is an electrical engineer. The couple started following tiny homes in 2010.

Name: Rachel Klein, her husband and his brother Location: Sitka, Alaska Size: 800 square feet Years lived in: 3.5 years, owned You got to see a look into Rachel Klein’s Alaska home—and her interior design skills—with her kitchen’s before and after published earlier this year. She recently submitted more photos of the rest of her home… and like the kitchen redo, the entire place is now bright, airy, warm and welcoming.

Name: Erica Massey and dog Deacon Location: Dallas, Texas Size: 750 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting I am a 26-year-old PhD student living with my four-year-old Belgian Malinois named Deacon. I live on fellowship/stipend from teaching undergraduate classes at my university, so I end up DIY-ing and/or IKEA-hacking a lot of home decor (my kitchen island, my bed, my couch, my bookshelves…).

Name: Kevin Wagner, wife Amber, two cats, Fjell and Fritz, a farm dog, Finn, and several chickens Location: Vandalia, Iowa Size: 2500 square feet Years lived in: 4 years, owned Our home is an Italianate-style brick home that we believe was built in the 1870s. It resides on the outskirts of a once prosperous rural town, Vandalia, Iowa. We own the surrounding seven acres, which is divided into our yard, garden, flower plots, and native virgin prairie.

Name: Louisa Johnsson Zea, husband Mario and cat Aycha Location: Lugnet — Malmö, Sweden Size: 667 square feet Years lived in: 1.5 years, renting Mario, my husband, and I share this place with our cat Aycha. We moved to Sweden from New York City almost two years ago for work (I’m the director for a European Social Fund project) but left most of our things in storage in NYC.

Name: Tiffany Williams Location: Jacksonville, Florida Size: 689 square feet Years lived in: 7 months, renting “Currently I reside by myself in a one-bedroom dwelling on the Southside of Jacksonville, Florida,” writes Tiffany Williams. “I relocated to this area for work and I wanted to create a space that I felt comfortable in as well as something that was pleasing to the eye.

Name: Ilona Polcyn, my partner Daniel, our two sons Tycho, 13, and Fender, 7. Plus, two dogs. Location: Tilburg, The Netherlands Size: 3,229 square feet Years lived in: 7 years, owned I love to use my home as my test lab. If I haven’t painted anything for a few weeks, the paint tins literally call out to me from the closet. I like a fresh white canvas decorated with vintage, design or handmade items, mostly in fresh or soft pastel colors.

Name: Dani Loseke, partner, two boys Location: Bloomington, Illinois Years lived in: 7 months, renting This may sound really cliche, but after my divorce, I used designing and decorating as my own therapy. My goal was to make my home a place where I could come home and feel like I was on a vacation. Before I moved in to this three-bedroom ranch, I lived in a very small, but charming two-bedroom rental.

Name: Lauren White Location: Sacramento, California Size: 1,100 square feet Years lived in: 4 months, owned This is the first home I’ve ever owned. I’m single, and have a full-time job as well as owning my own photography business, so when looking for a home to purchase, I wanted something that was new and wouldn’t require any flipping or renovation. I found this new development with the perfect 1,100 square foot condo for me!

Name: Carly Martin, my husband, and our rescue pup, Norman Location: Wicker Park/Bucktown — Chicago, Illinois Size: 1600 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting My husband and I moved from NYC a few years ago where we lived in a 500-square-foot apartment for four years, so now that we have nearly triple the amount of space (for less money!) we try to use it wisely and don’t take an inch of it for granted.

Sick of competing for over-priced houses we didn’t really like in LA, we thought, let’s buy our dream home in Lake Arrowhead for a third of the price.

Name: Norm Ofstead Location: Orlando, Florida Size: 724 square feet Years lived in: 2 months, renting After having roommates for most of my life I am finally living in a space I can call my own. I recently moved into this beautiful second-floor apartment in Orlando and have loved getting to put my personal style into the space. I like to think of my style as well-traveled meets mid-century.

Name: Marie-Eve Lalande Location: Saint-Lambert, Quebec, Canada Size: 1000 square feet Years owned: 40 years This house was built in 1900 and for the last 40 years, it belonged to my parents-in-law who had one way of living: like in the old times! Every object that entered the house had to be antique, pretty, and authentic. So, you can forget about the microwave, no matter how helpful it could have been!

Name: Katherine Corden and her fiancé Dave Location: Lincoln Park Neighborhood — Chicago, Illinois Size: 600 square feet Years lived in: 1 year, renting Dave and I moved in together about one year ago, around the same time we got engaged. We both are physical therapists full time but when we’re not working, we are pursuing our creative passions! Dave loves playing guitar and learning new music, and I am working to grow my fine art business.

Name: Marta Lemos and Tadeu de França Machado and a cat Location: Lisbon, Portugal Years lived in: 2 years, renting I’m a fashion designer and my boyfriend Tadeu is a photographer. We are very lucky to live in this beautiful apartment with tons of natural light, in a really great neighborhood, surrounded by amazing people—we are close friends with all the neighbors in the building!

My intention was to rent for a year or two and then purchase a house once I knew what I wanted. My dog Gunner was a big dog so I needed a place with a decent-sized backyard. This house fit the bill. As strange as it sounds, once I moved in I felt a connection to this place.

Location: Neskowin, Oregon Size: 846 square feet Years lived in: 6 months, owned My husband Keaten and I have always dreamt of buying a beach house on the Oregon coast. When the opportunity came, we jumped on it and bought a small, very outdated cottage built in the ’60s with a ton of potential. The cottage is only a few steps to the beach, which is our dream.

This rental apartment in Philadelphia is proof.

Toddlers are messy, so to keep my sanity I made it as minimal as possible. I’m a very artistic person who also has their head in the clouds, so I can’t blame it all on my daughter. I work as a interior stylist and content creator so I spend a lot of time home.

Name: Fifi O’Neill with two cats, Minouche and Big Louie Location: Sarasota, Florida — The home is located in a historical neighborhood of vintage fishermen cottages known as The Maine Colony as it was settled by fishermen from Maine. Size: 950 square feet Years lived in: 20 years, owned I live alone with my two cats, Minouche and Big Louie, in a 1925 vintage fisherman cottage.
