The Most Expensive Cities in the World for Renters Are in the US
Everybody knows the rent is stupid high in San Francisco, New York City, and Boston — it’s one of those sad running jokes, an absurdity that’s nonetheless become an accepted fact of life at this point. But a new study by London real-estate startup Nested shows that America’s most notoriously expensive rental markets are now the priciest in the whole world.

This Guy Pays Rent to Live in a Brooklyn Crawlspace
One could argue that New York’s questionably legal housing stock has been around for hundreds of years, ever since immigrants started populating the island in droves. You could also argue that it’s reached a whole new level when one such place is featured in the real estate section of the New York Times. Related: Could You Live in Under 200 Square Feet? One Reason to Renew: Staying Put Can Save Renters Thousands of Dollars a Year, New Study Says
Your landlord just sent a lease renewal form, but you’re not sure you want to sign it again this year. The rent is going up, the parking situation sucks, and the upstairs neighbors always seem to drag furniture across the floor in those fleeting seconds between consciousness and sleep. The average rent nationwide has been rising, but market rate rents — those advertised to new renters — are climbing even faster, according to new research by Zillow.

Here’s What $1500 Will Rent You in Each of NYC’s Boroughs
Yep, living in New York City is expensive, especially when it comes to real estate. Even $1 million doesn’t get everything on your wishlist. Yet, over 8.5 million people live in the Big Apple, and at least some of them live in relatively affordable, non-rent controlled apartments. So we scoured what’s currently on the market, and came up with ten rentals across the five boroughs for around $1,500 a month. What does that get you in Manhattan versus Staten Island? Let’s find out.

These Vintage Rental Ads Prove Apartment Hunting Has Always Been Terrible
With Craigslist scams, insane deposits, and apartments that look nothing like the listing photos, finding the perfect rental is tough. With rents rising and the housing market getting crazy competitive in urban hubs, it’s hard not to feel like this is a terrible time to be a renter. Thankfully, RentCafe gathered up some of the worst, weirdest and oddly delightful rental ads of yore, to help us feel just a tiny bit better about how we rent today.

The Battle of the Bugs: How To Prevent & Get Rid of Pests
A couple of weeks ago I helped my brother pick out an apartment in Northern Virginia. We found a great one-bedroom in an older apartment complex, recently remodeled, it has ample storage, a large patio, and it’s close to his work. One little problem: we started to move him in and found a roach hanging out in the kitchen cabinet. Then we found another by the sink. And a tiny one was running across the pantry door. Uh-oh, there’s a bug problem.

My Life Without a Dishwasher
My current flat has a dishwasher, which, after 5+ years of living in London without one, felt like a huge luxury when I moved in a year ago. In my naivety, I thought I’d become so used to and efficient at washing my own dishes that I’d barely use the thing. Yeah, you can guess how long that attitude lasted. The following statement pretty much sums up how my flatmate and I view doing the dishes: if something fits into the dishwasher, it’s going into the dishwasher.
