This Editor Favorite Dutch Oven Is as Good as Those Fancy French Brands — and It’s on Sale for $40
A Dutch oven is that one piece of cookware that can turn out delicious savory soups and stews, braise meats until they’re fall-apart tender, and even bake crusty bread. And contrary to popular belief (ahem, fancy French brands, we’re looking at you!), it doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, right now you can bring one home that works “like a champ” for $39.99 (normally $69.99). Yes, you read that right — thanks to Bed Bath & Beyond’s Thanksgiving MVP sale, one of our favorite affordable Dutch ovens just got a whole lot cheaper.
Designed exclusively for Bed Bath & Beyond under the private-label brand Artisanal Kitchen Supply, there’s nothing cheap about this budget-friendly pick. Kitchn writer Danielle Centoni put the 6-qt. Dutch oven to test earlier this year and was blown away by its superior performance. For starters, unlike most Dutch ovens, Bed Bath & Beyond’s is a lot taller, giving you additional headspace that comes in handy when you’re making things like stock or no-knead bread. Danielle also found the handles to be big and comfortable to grip, and the exterior and lid stayed cool to the touch even after sitting on a hot stove for hours.
But where the Dutch oven truly shines is in its ability to brown meats to perfection. “The cubes of pork shoulder for my stew cooked up evenly golden, no matter where in the pot they were placed,” said Danielle, particularly calling out the light-colored enameled interior that makes it easy to see how things are progressing.
Besides being an absolute workhorse, the Dutch oven is also quite the looker! It comes in seven yummy colors (including a cherry red, a moody denim, and a smoky grey), and the exterior has a chic gradient paint job that’ll look attractive on your stovetop. The lid has concentric circles that aren’t just for show but actually encourage “self-basting” as condensation drips down into the center of the pot (similar to the spikes under the lid of a Staub).
“It’s a beauty that can work just as well as a Dutch oven five times its price, and well worth adding to your collection,” Danielle noted.
Whether you grab one for all of your cold-weather cooking or to place under your favorite food lover’s Christmas tree, you can’t go wrong for $40.
