House Calls

Name: Abby Greenawalt Location: Capitol Hill, Washington, DC Eight years ago I stumbled upon a quirky little apartment in the heart of Capitol Hill, located about two and half blocks from the Capitol (not kidding). It’s about 750 square feet with a very sweet balcony. Perfecting the art of tiny apartment living is a continuous work in progress. If something comes in, something has to go out.

Name: March Location: Bethesda, Maryland Last year I packed up our four kids and maybe 20% of our furniture and we left our big house, and everything in it, to be sold. At the time, it felt like – it was – an enormous loss, although I did everything I could to make it seem like an adventure. We moved to a temporary rental; I caught my breath. I was determined to stay in the same general area, so my kids could have the same friends and go to the same school.

Name: Lauren Location: West Village, New York City I’ve been living in my 500 square foot, 5th floor walk-up studio in the West Village for about a year now. I moved approximately seven blocks south from another West Village place. The neighborhood feels like a dynamite grown-up version of Sesame Street to me where everyone knows everyone, which is a huge rarity in New York. I couldn’t possibly move out of the ‘hood!

Name: Erika Stanley Location: Seattle, Washington My husband, six kids, and our yorkie live in a 2000 square foot, 1909 Craftsman in Seattle. My parents bought this house when my firstborn was a baby. It had brown shag carpet, walls dripping with nicotine, the original kitchen, electrical and plumbing. My parents were new to town and thought it was way over-priced. I begged and convinced them to buy it with the secret hope of one day owning it myself.

Name: Kelley and Matt Location: Salisbury, North Carolina I live in a very old apartment with beautiful windows and 13′ ceilings with my boyfriend, Matt. I’m a graphic designer and Matt’s in web marketing and our workplaces are about an hour and a half apart. When we decided to move-in together, our options were a little limited by geography. Matt and I chose this 100+ year old apartment in downtown Salisbury, NC for our first go at co-habitation.

Name: Susan Snow Location: Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island This house is a two-story traditional style. My boyfriend lived in it previously, so it had a real bachelor pad feel to it, which was terribly dated. When we decided to move in together, the renovations, updating and decorating started! Name: Noah Allison Location: Brooklyn, New York Six months ago, I finally made the move to New York from Los Angeles. As a result that I became car-free over two years ago, assimilating to public transit was much easier than adapting to the realization that I was going to be living in a much smaller space that I was use to.

Name: Nina Location: Hermosa Beach, CA Although Hermosa Beach is a cool 30 minutes from my office, boyfriend, friends, and yoga studio, I fell in love with my apartment down there the moment I walked in. The hardwood floors, the beamed ceilings, the ocean view. However, the space came with it’s own unique challenges… For one, it’s a small studio. It doesn’t have designated/separate spaces for sleeping/eating/lounging. And the kicker is: it doesn’t have a kitchen.

Name: Juliana Location: Montpelier, France A few years ago, I quit my old job and back to school to become interior architect. I was 30, people thought I was crazy, but when I found this old apartment from sixties I started to imagine how many things we could do in there and how I would love to work in a design job! Dreams can come true! It’s a 82 square meter apartment near historic center, with 2 rooms and a 14 square meter balcony.

Name: Roderick of Beautiful Budapest Apartments Location: Budapest I am an American owner of a real estate business in Budapest. We create apartments in 19th century buildings that are beautiful, highly comfortable, and have very low energy costs (Passivhaus technology). This most recent project is a 100 sq meter apartment. Name: Brooke Location: Seattle, WA I’m a graphic designer + art director living in Seattle. I moved here a year ago from San Francisco, and found the best little loft apartment. I was working from home, so it was important to make a space I loved being in… all day long. A lot of the my stuff from San Francisco didn’t fit in my apartment (so it’s in my boyfriends equally as awesome apartment), and I bought some new pieces. I’m from Texas, so I love ranch style decor.

Name: Hannah & Tara Location: Denton, Texas (Editor’s note: It’s a delightful coincidence that this weekend’s house calls came from the same stylish spot in Texas.) My best friend Tara and I lived in a student-living apartment together with two other girls for two years before moving into this space for our senior year at The University of North Texas.

Name: Paige & Dwight Location: Denton, Texas Our little home is located just north of downtown Denton, Texas. The 1100 square foot, 1940s home is one that Dwight bought over a decade ago and he gutted it a couple of years ago, preserving the mantel and as much of the hardwood flooring as possible, but replacing almost every single other detail in the home.

Name: Paul Location: Long Beach, CA My wife and I have been living in lofts since 2005, and bought this loft in 2007. as an artist, it was always really important to me to have my work space in the home, so lofts have been ideal. Our home is in the Temple Lofts, which is a converted Masonic Temple from 1926. our unit is one of the largest in the building at 2322sqft and features original brick work throughout the house.

Name: Calvin and Kelly Location: Atlanta, GA My better half, Kelly and I took on the task of building our dream home on an empty lot in an up and coming neighborhood in Old Fourth Ward, Atlanta. We conveniently had close friends that were amazing architects and were willing to go on the journey with us on this creation. We had a few significant hardships along the way, some typical to most building experiences – Builder that took our money, bad sub-contractors, etc. You name it.

Name: Derrick Johnson Location: Downtown, Los Angeles, California How did I end up in Downtown Los Angeles? It was all by chance while meeting a friend for lunch. We saw a sign that said loft tours and this loft was the first and last loft on that tour. I instantly fell in love. Its openness, natural light and historical details are the reasons why, five years later, I’m still proud to call Downtown Los Angeles my home.

Name: Ildiko Location: Budapest, Hungary We have a small (37m2 = 398 square foot) one-room apartment in Budapest downtown that we’ve transformed into an Airbnb rental. We had really little money to do it so my husband Andras and I did as much as we could by ourselves. Andras designed and built the cup holder coffee table. And I painted the paintings (except the one above the television, that is by Sara Osgyanyi).

Name: Deidre Location: Riverfront in the Berkshires This is my newly built home, transformed from a dilapidated, very sad house to a modified Whidbey Tumbleweed “tiny house” set at the river on a very quiet street in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. It includes two bedrooms and a wonderful contemporary wood stove. Everything is crisp and clean; I used a warm Benjamin Moore Barren Plain gray paint throughout.

Name: Viv Location: South East London, UK We live in a 2 bed apartment in South East London, in a converted mews development (used to be a dairy mews in 1880’s). We love it for the interesting layout, tall ceilings in the bedrooms and quirky features like a weird column in the middle of the lounge! We painted everything Farrow and Ball (Cornforth white in the lounge, Downpipe in the hallway, Plummet in the master bedroom and Theresa’s Green in the baby nursery).

Name: Aileen Allen Location: Edmonds, Washington My husband and I rent a 1200 square foot apartment in Edmonds, Washington — a little beach town about half an hour north of Seattle. Our decorating budget is pretty small, so our home is mostly filled with DIY projects that we’ve done and pieces from thrift stores and antique malls. My favorite room is our living room…it’s the one that gets the most light, and the room that we’ve done the most to.

Name: Charlotte Location: Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, Pennslyvania We live in a one bedroom apartment in a 16-story building (older but well maintained) just a block and a half from Rittenhouse Square and catty-corner from the most wonderful Philly bakery, Metropolitan. I live with my boyfriend. We are two students, so we are incredibly budget conscious. Our style is eclectic: mid-century (or imitation) with warmer, older accents from flea markets, ebay, etsy and hand-me-downs.

Name: Danielle Location: My boyfriend and I are smitten with our charming pre-war one bedroom rental in Manhattan. Overlooking one of Greenwich Village’s historic, tree-lined streets just a few blocks north of Washington Square Park, our little 650 square foot apartment is situated on our building’s rooftop giving it a Penthouse address.

Name: Jenny Kaplan and Chris Corrado Location: Brooklyn, New York Chris and I have been living together for about a year. I moved into his apartment, where he has been living for the past six years. Chris already had a lot of the “bones” in place, but was looking for a touch of feminine to soften the space space up. We gave the apartment an entire face lift — merging both our styles together in a clean, modern approach.

Name: Kelly Millspaugh Thompson Location: Falls Church, Virginia (right outside of Washington DC) Our dutch colonial is located in Falls Church Virginia which is about 10 miles outside of Washington DC. We are located in a little area called Sleepy Hollow, an older mature neighborhood with big lots and lots of trees. When we bought our home it was the ugly duckling on the block but my husband and I saw the potential.

Name: John of Coil & Drift Location: Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NY My partner and I moved into this one bedroom with a separate den in the heart of Fort Greene, Brooklyn three years ago. We fell in love with Fort Greene because of the diversity and green spaces it offered and with our apartment because of it’s simple, clean layout and pre-war character and charm.

Name: Graylin Location: Corydon, IN We are about to move out of this adorable 900 sq. ft bungalow and into our dream house which is right across the street! My dad, Steve Porter, is a professional woodworker and took this house on as a side project. He gutted it and put his touch on every inch. Craftsman style cabinets and built-ins throughout, which is perfect for our style. We consider our style to be an eclectic form of modern with craftsman influences.

Name: Lauren Diane Svenstrup Location: Andersonville, Chicago, Illinois This apartment is in a vintage courtyard building and is around 700 square feet. I have lived here almost two years. As an interior designer, my space is an ever-changing canvas. Just when I think I am done, I find another project. Deep down at the core, I have an affinity for vintage finds. I love the hunt, I love the history. Up until this past year, I would say about 90% of my furniture was either inherited or found.

Name: Rachel Rose Location: Downtown Prescott, Arizona Our tiny coolest home is a studio rental in the heart of historic downtown Prescott, Arizona. It is only 530 square feet yet feels just perfect for me and my husband. The property owners/management (who are friends of ours) took a year to completely renovate and restore this precious space.

Name: Darren Location: Castro/Dolores Park Heights, San Francisco My partner and I are Los Angeles natives who moved to San Francisco about a year ago. We found a beautiful, one-bedroom apartment with amazing views of downtown and even the Bay Bridge and Oakland on a clear day. Given the competitive renter’s market up here, we consider ourselves very fortunate to find such a great home.

Name: Jenn Deese Location: Pico/Robertson Area, Los Angeles, California I live in a large one bedroom apartment (about 900 square feet) in Los Angeles’ Pico/Robertson area. I’ve been here for about a year, and my apartment has been ever evolving since I got here! One amazing feature of my apartment is the fact that I’ve got an incredible amount of natural light that comes in through big bay windows in the front of the apartment.

Name: Kimber Lee Falkinburg Location: Cherrywood Neighborhood, Austin, Texas My studio is 505 square feet of travel inspiration located in the Cherrywood neighborhood of Austin, Texas. Navigating the sea of concrete islands amidst Austin’s Greenbelt and Town Lake, I ultimately chose the East Side neighborhood of Cherrywood for the artistic nature of its residents hoping to immerse myself in a culture of creativity as I prepare for my round-the-world journey in 2015.

Name: Amanda Location: New York, New York This room is seriously my favorite of the whole apartment. I managed to make it sleek enough that I can have guests over for wine and cheese, yet comfortable enough for my husband to plop down on the couch and watch a game. I conquered this mission by : 1. Sticking with a neutral color palette of grays and whites 2. Choosing sleek and simple furniture – like white Barcelona chairs and a chrome legged coffee table 3.

Name: Janine Location: Lauraville, Baltimore, Maryland I live with my boyfriend, Michael, in a three story 2200 sq ft 1914 colonial located in the historic Lauraville neighborhood of northeast Baltimore. Though I’d been house hunting for years, I discovered our house by accident when I went to the previous owners’ estate sale, sourcing items for my online shop Guermantes Vintage. Right away I fell in love with all the historic details.

Name: Trisha Location: Edina, Minnesota We moved from a row house in Chicago to this light-filled, 5,000 s.f. home in Edina, MN a little over two years ago. The location is excellent — within 5 minutes, we can walk to the grocery store, grab a coffee, pick up our dry cleaning and even see a movie in an indie theater if we so choose. We have small backyards which forces everyone on our street to their front yards, making our neighborhood very social.

Name: Erin Buterick Location: Tuckerton, NJ My husband Paul and I live in a 1910 colonial situated in the historic fishing village of Tuckerton, New Jersey. When we bought it, we were aware of the fact that it was originally built by the local sea captain, not until a little while later did we learn that the sea captain was in fact a woman. Her name was Virgina and she went by ‘Captain Ginny.

Name: Maria Location: Washington, DC Coming by this place was a happy surprise. I was looking for something close to work, in another area of the city — where things are smaller and more expensive. When the house I had my eye on did not work out, I decided to branch out and found this apartment. I fell in love with how big and bright it is. I move every few years for work, so that poses opportunities and challenges.

Name: Elena Location: Crete, Greece My house is an old traditional mansion whose renovation was completed in 2007 with lots of love and passion. It combines a traditional way of living with luxury and modern amenities. What I love most about my house is the “katoi”— a cave from natural rock that was used as living space many years ago, and as storage of agricultural products much later. Today it’s a studio of 60 square metres.

Name: Christine Donnelly Location: Toronto, ON I bought this small house (about 1,000 square feet) on my own 6 years ago in an up-and-coming (read: rough and tumble) area called Parkdale, in Toronto’s west end. Having grown up in public housing I spent my childhood living and playing in huge stretches of run-down apartment buildings. For me, the idea of living in a “real” house one day seemed like an impossible dream.

Name: Emily & Jonnie Coutu of Hundred Acre Design Location: Worcester, MA My husband Jonnie and I have been renting our 1100 square foot pre-war apartment in Worcester, MA for 5 years. We chose it for its architectural details, high ceilings and large windows, and didn’t mind that it was lacking in some amenities such as a dishwasher, central air and in-unit laundry. As an architectural designer, original moldings trump modern conveniences every time!

Name: Sara Sjorgen Location: Brooklyn, New York My home in downtown Brooklyn is used as a second home for myself, friends and family who consider New York their home for part of the year. I personally spend a few weeks every year in the city for business, and chose this location because of the interesting neighborhoods and its proximity to Manhattan and the rest of the city.

Name: Baiyina Hughley Location: Miracle Mile, Los Angeles, California I live in an 800 square foot 1930s apartment in Miracle Mile in Los Angeles. I love how sunny the space is, the great views and the sound of birds chirping and lawns being mowed — it’s my own private oasis of calm in the city. My style is elegant eclectic minimalism, influenced by a long-time passion of flea market shopping yet refined by ability to finally restrain myself from impulse buying.

Name: Mattias Wikman Location: Birkastan, Stockholm, Sweden This old store front is a townhouse-like apartment with a private entrance at the center of Birkastan, a trendy area in Stockholm. We fell in love with the space by accident when looking at another apartment on the same street. This was not really what we needed, but we could not resist the open and large space. We got the chance to buy it and fixed it into a great family home that feels like a townhouse.

Name: Melissa Location: Cole Valley, San Francisco, California Before we lived in Cole Valley we lived six blocks north in the Upper Haight neighborhood. Like a lot of San Francisco homes our apartment was vulnerable to the dampness of living in the western part of the city and we incurred a horrific mold outbreak. It’s hard for a home to feel like a home when you can’t even hang pictures on the walls.

Name: Luis and Alex Location: West Seattle. Seattle, WA My wife Alex and I bought this charming 1950s mid-century house last year in a quiet 50s neighborhood in West Seattle, about 20 minutes from downtown. It’s a really tiny two bedroom, one bathroom bungalow around 900 square feet (before we finished the basement). Before we moved in we re-did the kitchen. We opened up the wall to the dining room to allow much needed daylight to flood the room.

Name: Charlie Man Location: Toronto, Ontario My home is a one bedroom, 775 square foot loft that was converted from an old scientific instrument factory, originally built in the 1920s. I’ve always loved converted lofts because of the charm and character inherent in older buildings. The original wood ceiling is definitely my favorite thing about my apartment.

Name: Yana of NoMad Luxuries Location: Chicago, Illinois The great thing about this city is that each and every neighborhood has its own style and energy. We live in the Uptown/Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago and really enjoy the proximity to the lake. We especially fell in-love with the charming details of our condo. When we started looking, we knew we wanted a space that had good bones and vintage character, but didn’t necessarily want to pay for someone else’s style.

Name: Katie Runyan Location: Phoenix Homesteads Neighborhood, Phoenix, Arizona Our home is an adobe style built in 1937. The original thick concrete walls with rounded corners and high ceilings keep things cooler in the summer. We’re both from back east so the combination of history and greenery of the neighborhood instantly won us over. When we were house hunting this was the first house we saw and we knew instantly that we should make an offer.

Name: Carolyn’s Notting Hill Victorian Flat Location: Notting Hill, London, United Kingdom This is a first floor Victorian flat in the heart of Notting Hill — blessed with very high ceilings. It is, however, under 550 square feet. As a foreigner I wanted to live in a “postcard” home.

Name: Elizabeth Location: Meatpacking District, New York City, New York My husband and I rent a 3rd floor walk up in the Meatpacking District. We moved from London the week that [Hurricane] Sandy hit and so our apartment search was narrowed to areas not affected by the storm, mainly Midtown and Upper West Side. When we walked around the West Village and Chelsea we fell in love with the area and knew we wanted to live here if we could afford an apartment.

Name: Faye Location: New York City, New York My home is decorated very bohemian like. It’s very cozy and tiny! It’s a studio in Manhattan — 200 square feet. Most of my furniture is from Urban Outfitters, the garbage, or hand-me-downs. My favorite item is my rocking chair. Name: Laura Paul Location: Ottawa, Ontario My home is an 850 square foot, two-bedroom condo in Old Ottawa South, which I purchased when moving back ‘home’ after living in Toronto. Sustainability is my passion, and Buildings are my canvas (I obtained a Bachelors in Civil Engineering). I went to work renovating the dated condo to be more sustainable, and inline with my personal aesthetics.

Name: Limor Zamir Location: Tel Aviv, Israel I’m from sunny Tel Aviv in Israel and my four bedroom apartment is located in the Northern part of the city. The look of it clearly reflects my love of shabby chic style! I just renovated the kitchen because I couldn’t stand the plain boring cabinet doors, so I changed them all into ones with a shabby chic, grandma-style glass doors. The bathroom cabinets were also replaced to coordinate with the new kitchen’s style.

Name: Lindsey Location: West Loop, Chicago In our seven years in Chicago, we’ve moved seven times and this is honestly the most interesting building we’ve ever lived in… We packed up and purged from a 3-bedroom house into a 900-square foot space with our dog, Max. As soon as we unloaded the truck, people began welcoming us into the building and telling us about its history. We were invited to the annual progressive dinner where you visit different units.

Name: Nicholas Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn A writer and college professor, I fell in love with this apartment immediately when I went looking for a place to live and work. It’s an awkward space—-living room, two very small interior rooms, kitchen with small toilet room and separate shower—but it gets tremendous light. On a budget, I mixed old family furniture and some key purchases on sale at a local furniture store, Organic Modernism.

Name: Mandi Smethells Location: St. Paul, Minnesota Our home is a 1920s bungalow in the Como Park neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota. It is a stretch to say it is 1400 square feet (it has a half story with low ceilings, and a finished basement.) My husband and I purchased it early last summer and share it with our 2 and a half year old daughter Madeline, our two cats, and our dog. We were definitely looking for a home with character, and St. Paul is not short on them.

Name: Jennifer Location: San Francisco, California My apartment in San Francisco is located in a 1903 Pacific Heights Victorian. I found it unique because it has a nice mix of old Victorian details, but also has the feel of a modern loft. It is about 1,500 square feet, with a garden and views over the city. I am a graphic designer [see her work at Paper Plane Studio], and love the 15-foot ceilings to showcase a lot of art.

Name: Renee Location: Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada Our home is a two story, three bedroom house built in 1950. It’s just a little over 1400 square feet. We have lived here for about 5 years now and we have loved every moment. Our house is full of light and the layout is perfect for entertaining. We love that it has character with plenty of molding, wood fireplace, rounded doorways and lovely french doors. My design inspirations are simple and classic, with a fun twist.

Name: Maria Location: Brooklyn I lease a very tiny apartment in Brooklyn. A high ceiling helps add some air and creates an illusion of a larger space. I’ve managed to divide my 500 square foot room into four different zones: entry, bedroom, work & lounge, kitchen. Name: Jill Smith Location: Silverlake, California I bought my Silverlake, California cottage almost two years ago. At a little over 800 square feet it was perfect for me, my dog and my cat. Name: Alexandra Location: Santa Monica, California When I was finally able to afford to move out of my parents house at the grand old age of 28 (law school tuition and incredibly benevolent parents are a surefire way to keep a girl at home) I scoured the earth to find what is now my perfect first apartment and in all honesty, my sanctuary. It is a 1930’s bungalow/cottage located in the heart of Santa Monica (my hometown).

Name: Nicole & Mike Location: West Loop, Chicago My husband Mike and I live and work in a work/live loft in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. The loft is almost 2000 square feet, located in an old factory and has no doors other than the one on the bathroom. I am a graphic designer/photographer and Mike is a graphic designer/illustrator and we run a small studio together so we needed a place that has as much space as possible for all of our work stuff as well as our living space.

Name: Sara Knowles Location: Beacon Hill Neighborhood, Seattle, Washington My partner Logan and I recently relocated to Seattle from Washington, DC, and found a lovely little house to rent in the Beacon Hill neighborhood — conveniently on the same street as my sister! It is a charming craftsman that has been recently updated but retained some of its period details, like the beautiful original cabinetry in the kitchen and much of the original hardware.

Name: Sandra Location: Seattle, Washington Last June, my husband Ezra and I purchased a fixer upper in the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle. Although the home was pretty outdated and in need of some major help, we saw potential in the home. So, we purchased it and gut renovated the place from top to bottom on a limited budget, finding inexpensive materials without sacrificing on our desired aesthetic and doing all of the design work on our own to save on costs.

Name: Bianca Location: Capitol Hill Neighborhood, Seattle, Washington I moved into this lovely classic building back in October. It’s the smallest place I’ve lived in, at 520 square feet. But I love it. The size forces me to edit and be conscious of how much stuff I own. I’m really enjoying the simplicity. My bedroom doesn’t receive much light.

Name: Maggie Location: Heilsbronn, Germany When my husband made the Army his career thirteen years ago I knew there would be moves involved but I didn’t expect nine moves in fourteen years. Although all this moving can be hard, I have to say, I love having a new house every few years to put my stamp on. I have a degree in architecture and a husband who lets me do as please with the house.

Name: Penelope, Zack and pup Milli Location: Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York When my boyfriend and I decided to take the plunge last summer and apartment hunt together, our only absolutes were that we find a two bedroom (Zack is a photographer, and needed the extra room to use as his studio) with subway proximity. After a week of searching, our dream apartment — two bedroom, spacious, rooftop access, modern, airy — popped up on Craigslist. The only catch?

Name: Jennie Cain Location: Athens, Georgia My home is in Athens, Georgia and is 900 square feet. It is a small brick house on one level with an attic. I chose to live here because it is a home built in the 1930s and is in the Athens “Normaltown” neighborhood. It is also very close to a park. My inspiration are Wes Anderson films, vintage decor books and bright, poppy colors. Bright colors rock my world!

Name: Noelle Shumer Location: Toledo, Ohio Our home is a one story, 824 square foot, built in the mid 1950s, total labor of L-O-V-E. We purchased it nine years ago (and it’s currently for sale) and have spent that time updating and making it ours. I don’t think I have a specific “style” when it comes to decor, but I tend to find myself drawn towards modern + clean lined furnishings yet eclectic, vintage accessories.

Name: Lindsay George Location: Nashville, Tennessee My home was built in 1910 in the Victorian style. It is in the 12South neighborhood of Nashville (aka, the best neighborhood in Nashville!). I have lived here for three years, and during this time I have worked to completely restore and rehab the house. It is approximately 2400 square feet. I renovated the bathrooms, kitchen, added an upstairs, and updated the porch and exterior.

Our home is a serene, comforting space in the middle of the bustling downtown scene. It is approximately 800 square feet with two bedrooms and has a large, open kitchen and living space. We also have huge windows, which let in lots of light. Our style is an eclectic mix of handcrafted decor and thrift store finds.

Name: Emilie Location: France We live in a small stone cottage from the 17th century in a little hamlet at the top of hill in Dordogne, France. It’s our escape in the countryside. We furnished it only with flea markets and brocante stuff. Our favorite furnitures are in the kitchen, we found an old icebox furniture from the 50’s on “Le bon coin” (like Craiglist in France).
