There’s something very satisfying to me about repurposing an older or unwanted object into something useful for your home. For example, I sometimes buy yogurt that comes in little glass containers, but instead of just recycling the glass when I’m done with them I realized I could use them around my house to store things like paintbrushes, bathroom toiletries, or even travel-sized hand creams.

My apartment isn’t all that small, aside from the bathroom. With virtually no built-in storage, my tiny countertop easily becomes a chaotic mess of toiletries, cotton swabs, floss picks, nail clippers, and eye drops no matter how often I tidy up. For the longest time, I thought that’s just how it would always be. Then, inspiration struck in the most unexpected place: my local gym.

My bathroom is a strange place. It has two showers (yes, really) and, naturally, one toilet. I have under-sink storage, and technically the bathroom mirror opens up to what should be a shelved medicine cabinet — except there are no shelves in the medicine cabinet at all. It’s just empty space. As such, and because my bathroom is on the smaller side, I need more storage in my bathroom, always.

When it comes to workspaces, I find I need plenty of small-space storage solutions that can keep up with all of my pens, crafting supplies, and other desk accoutrement. Portable, multi-compartment storage is ideal, and it can actually be super-useful for corralling all sorts of stuff around the house: office supplies, makeup and nail polish, paint, crafting tools, jewelry, even mini condiments and sauces.

My little corner house is a colonial-style home built in the 1930s, when galley kitchens were incredibly common and larger formal dining rooms were prioritized. The galley kitchen doesn’t necessarily feel cramped, but its layout is incredibly awkward.

When I return home from grocery shopping and unload and sort through all my shopping bags, my fridge inevitably gets packed to the brim with stuff. Each shelf and drawer is stocked up — especially the produce drawers that get filled with not only fresh fruits and vegetables, but also the individual containers or bags they’re often sold in.

You can set up all kinds of shelves, bins, and boxes in your home, but somehow it always feels like you could use more storage — especially in high-traffic areas like your home’s entryway. I don’t have a ton of room by my front door, and the area can get cluttered and overwhelmed very fast.

If there’s one adage I live by, it’s that there should be a place for everything, and everything should be in its place. I’m a typical “Type A” eldest daughter, and the thought of not putting things back where they belong as soon as I’m done with them is simply beyond comprehension. Normally, this dedication to organization is a positive trait.

I’m not one for visual clutter, so I’ve only put a few items on the glass shelves (which makes them an impractical solution).

I live by the philosophy that everything in your home needs a home. When each and every item has a designated spot in my apartment, tidying up is effortless, and I rarely spend time looking for my things before heading out the door. The hard part, though, is finding those designated spots in the first place, especially since I have a lot of stuff in a small space. Often, I have to create them out of thin air.
