Before & After: A One-Weekend Bathroom Refresh (+ Painting Tips from a Lazy Perfectionist)
With the warm season starting, I’ve become obsessed with all things white. So I’ve returned to my rental white walls in the bathroom, which feels so fresh and clean for summer. Check out the results below. I used the same color on the baseboard and moldings so I didn’t need to worry about that clean line of paint as the color changes (the most frustrating part of a painting job to a self-proclaimed lazy perfectionist).

How To Avoid “Painter’s Shoulder”
It came as a major blow to my ego that despite twice-weekly yoga sessions and thrice-weekly weightlifting, my left shoulder was defeated by my recent dabbling in wall painting. All this pain, just from painting! Granted, it was 8 solid hours of painting, a few days each week… Still, one doesn’t like to think that a low-impact activity can do such damage to one’s relatively young and decently strong body.

I am quite envious of skilled thrifters; I’m unable to see the potential in a yard sale find or figure out what’s quality and just needs a little repair or TLC. So I’ve been staring at this beautiful kids’ table and chair makeover for a few days. Check out what Lolly Jane did with this well-loved table and chairs.Amazing, right?

Paint Color Portfolio: Pale Pink Bedrooms
I’m a sucker for a pretty pale pink, especially in the bedroom. Pink can be soft and romantic, not to mention great for the skin. That being said, it’s tough to find a shade that’s sweet but not saccharine, feminine but not girly. Here are some inspired blush boudoirs that get it right and some paint swatches to help you get the look in your own room.INSPIRATION ROOMS:1. Katie Lydon Interiors via Apartment Therapy2. Can you scratch it with your fingernail? Does it peel? Does it stink? Does it poke you in the butt? Is it a tragic mess that will end up in a dumpster? Let me break it down for you. How To Repair Chipped China
I love delicate porcelain. Plates, bowls, vases — I’ve even started collecting pieces from White Forest Pottery, much to my wallet’s chagrin. What I don’t love are the moments right after you accidentally chip one of your prized possessions. But before writing them off completely, I thought I’d see if there was anyway I could salvage my beauties. While I realize they will never be 100% perfect again, my attempt at salvaging them was quite worthwhile.

Choosing the Best White Paint: A Cool vs. Warm and Old vs. New Theory
Anyone who has tried to pick out white paint knows there are tons of variants. In my case, I’ve started a personal crusade against antique white in favor of a brighter white. One of the most ambitious goals in my January Cure was painting all the antique white walls in my three-story row home Ultra Pure White. Having redone two long hallways areas, I’ve made decent progress. Today I’m working on an awkward stairway.

Quick Tip #40: How to Remove Dried Paint from Paint Brushes
Try vinegar! Soak the brush in vinegar for an hour or so until you can bend the bristles. Fill a saucepan with vinegar until the brush bristles are covered. Bring the vinegar to a boil and let it simmer for a couple of minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for a minute before removing the brush. Gently comb the brush with your fingers. The paint will still be attached but will fall away as you comb it. Rinse the brush under running water to release the loose paint.

Gary and his wife inherited this piece and hated it. A contingent of readers liked it as it was, others said to sell it and many of you had suggestions for how to transform it with paint or stain. Accidentally On-Trend: My Rose Gold Pantry Shelves
I am giddy over my new pretty, pretty pantry shelves. Just days ago, they were a hodgepodge of mismatched boards and faux-wood stickers. It’s amazing what a little paint and the old switcharoo will do! When we started working on our new house, I was pleased to find a set of shelves in the pantry. They were nothing to write home about, but they would hold things and they were free and they were fine.

Decorative Ideas for Painted Floor Projects
I was about to start a piece on my latest painted floor — a checkerboard — and I realized I have enough pictures of past projects at this point to do a review of all the possibilities. Painted floors need not look like the deck of a battleship. Do a quick Google search and you’ll see the broad variety of what other people are doing: stars, dolphins and whatnot, though my tastes run to the classical. Personally, I look to ancient Rome for inspiration.

Before & After: Bold Color in the Kitchen
When Lee moved into his apartment rental, the kitchen was stark white and sterile. Check out what some color and black and white self adhesive floor tiles can do…With the help of a hair dryer, he removed the old, cracked vinyl tiles, and replaced them with Armstrong self adhesive floor tiles (cost $90). By positioning them at an angle, he created a diamond pattern that helps to distracts the eye from the railroad apartment’s “long & skinny” shape.

DIY Home Decor: How To Paint a Faux Concrete Wall Finish
A few years ago I wrote about a distressed glazing technique which has a distressed feel to it, a way we developed to add visual texture to your walls that doesn’t like a stock rag rolling.
