Name: Verena, Ferdinand and their children Julian and Frederik Location: Hamburg, Germany The basics: 2 years, owned – 1,400 square feet After a streak of bad luck, Verena and her husband decided to wing it and put in a low offer on a home they loved. Not only was their offer accepted, they got some other pretty great news at the same time! Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: This apartment came into our lives all of a sudden.

Name: Mona, her boyfriend and their cats Minnow and Sushi Location: Central District — Seattle, Washington The basics: 1 year, rented — 600 square feet Mona and her boyfriend have created the perfect attic hideaway. Full of excellent thrift store finds and a surprising amount of light for Seattle, it is the kind of spot that folds you in.

Name: Amy Location: Chelsea — Manhattan, New York The basics: 3 years, rented — 500 square feet Amy’s apartment is a cozy and dreamy hideaway in the middle of New York City. Turning apartment features that are usually associated with a sort of muscular ‘urban cool’, exposed brick, loft beds, are somehow softly romantic.

Name: Jenny and Huck the English Bulldog Location: Logan Circle — Washington, DC The basics: 5 1/2 years, owned — 850 square feet Jenny is a professional organizer, so it comes at no surprise that her place looks, well, organized. But what’s so great is that yes, it looks tidy, but it also has those little personal and vibrant touches that make a space look lived in. And it doesn’t hurt that her dog is majorly cute.

Name: Anne and her husband Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota The basics: 30 years, owned — 3,500 square feet Anne’s home has the sort of settled into style that many of us dream about when we look at the bare walls of our new houses and apartments. Decorated with a mix of thrift store steals and colorful imports, Anne and her family have kept the historic character of the home alive all while creating a warm and welcoming space.

Name: Blake Location: Baton Rouge, Louisiana Dimensions: 85 square feet Imagine having the ability to take a look at some old fence posts you had lying around and thinking…yeah, I’ll just turn these into an extremely cool, tiny, modern office in my backyard. Blake did just that and we’re still kind of in awe. From Blake: Originally, this was just a nice-sized open backyard. As a hobby, I build things (usually simple furniture pieces) from scrap lumber I find.

Name: Oded Location: Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree, California The basics: 2 years, owned — 1,375 square feet Oded’s home is an open and functional space with the sort of desert vibes that are distinctly California. Designed with the landscape in mind, the desert light floods the house and the outdoor space has views to die for. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: We completed our home in December of 2015.

Name: Deepali, her husband and their 2 kids Location: Portland, Oregon The basics: 12 years, owned — 1,800 square feet Deepali’s home balances striking textiles with, well, kids. Creating a home that is as visually interesting as it is welcoming to all ages, she has created rooms that look lovingly lived in. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: This was the first home my husband and I purchased 12 years back.

Name: Amanda, her wife Courtney and their daughter Location: Stevenson, Washington The basics: 10 months, owned — 1,800 square feet Amanda and Courtney took a chance on a cabin in the woods that was in not-so-great shape. Their hard work and leap of faith paid off in dividends, their cabin is full of the kind of rustic charm that city folks spend their days daydreaming about on the subway.

Name: Tracy and Ian Location: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia The basics: 4 years, school staff housing — 1,500 square feet Tracy and Ian, two International School employees, have filled their home with colorful and just plain cool finds. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: We, Tracy Hill and Ian Hogg, have lived in Riyadh for four years, both work at an International School, I’m a teacher coach and Ian works in Facilities and Security Management.

Name: Jamie Location: Cincinnati, Ohio The basics: 6 years, rented | 1,800 square feet Jamie’s enviable apartment search, which took about five minutes, led her to this charming Cincinnati apartment. Exposed brick and rich colors set off her collection of thrifted finds and her gaggle of plant children. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: My apartment is my best Craigslist find to date.

Name: Ingeborg, Anton and their two daughters Location: Pankow — Berlin, Germany The basics: 5 1/2 years, rented 68 square meters (732 square feet) Ingeborg and her family have added color and character to their starkly white apartment. With little adjustments for every major life change, the apartment has been made to fit the family as it grows. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: Anton and I didn’t feel at home right from the start.

Name: Susan Yeley, her husband, 3 kids and 1 dog Location: Bloomington, Indiana The basics: 12 years, owned |3,000 square feet Susan, an interior designer, has slowly and lovingly renovated her home to meet the needs of her family of five. Taking their time with updates and expansions has helped the house truly make the lives of its inhabitants happier and healthier. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: In 2005, I was 37 weeks pregnant with our first child.

Name: Clemence, her partner and their cat Location: Saint Mandé, France The basics: 3 years, rented | 45 square meters (485 square feet) Clemence’s apartment mixes clean lines with leafy plants, black and white with pops of yellow. She also makes the most of the space, dividing it into areas designated for work and play. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: My boyfriend, my cat and I have lived in this apartment since 2014.

Name: Nicole and her family Location: Austinmer, Australia The basics: 1 year, rented Nicole describes Austinmer as, “a hidden coastal village tucked between the mountains and the seas only an hour south of Sydney.” If that doesn’t get you packing your bags, Nicole’s breezy bungalow will have you hoping on a plane.

Name: Talia Location: Bedford-Stuyvesant — Brooklyn, New York The basics: 1 year, owned | 1,350 square feet After living in the smaller unit for a few year, Talia and her son moved down into the larger unit of their Brooklyn brownstone. Super bright and kid (and cat) friendly, the space feels stylish yet unintimidating. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: Our apartment is on the garden and parlor floor of an old Brooklyn Brownstone.

Name: Courtney and her family Location: Ross, California The basics: 7 years, owned (recently sold) | 2,800 square feet Courtney decorated her home with usability in mind, which you might not immediately guess given how stunning it is. Beautifully thought out, the space balances curated style with a life with children and all that entails. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: This was our family home for seven years.

Name: Jennifer Location: East Austin — Austin, Texas The basics: 1 year, rented | 1,500 square feet Jennifer and her dogs have put down roots in this lovely Austin home. Jennifer is a designer by trade, and her ability to mix high and low, make bold choices work and balance a space is truly on display here. Name: Will and Jaz the cat Location: Westport — Kansas City, Missouri The basics: 2 years, rented | 500 square feet Will’s apartment has a casual cool that is endlessly inviting. Full of funky art and fantastic finds, it feels like a twist on classic Americana. We’re totally ready to stop on by for a beer on the balcony! Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I stumbled upon this little gem on Craigslist.

Name: Mili, her husband and their dog Location: Dallas, Texas The basics: 2 years, owned | 2,300 square feet Mili’s home has a mid-century flair that is perfectly balanced with global finds and accented with gorgeous textiles from her own line. After a kitchen and dining room remodel, the home is now open and inviting. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: It’s a 1979 ranch style home in Dallas, Texas.

Name: Cara, her roommate, 2 suite-mates and 9 plants Location: Baltimore, Maryland The basics: 8 months, rented | 286 square feet At first glance, you would have a hard time sussing out the fact that Cara’s room is actually in a dorm. The bright colors and cute accents are a far cry from the white cinderblock and bunk beds most often associated with freshman year. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: This is my freshman-year dorm room.

Name: Kathryn and her husband Derek Location: San Francisco, California The basics: 9 months, rented | 381 Square Feet Kathryn and Derek not only make this small space work for them, they thrive in it. Choosing to look at their apartment not as a burden but as an opportunity, they’ve embraced living small and all of the ways it can bring them closer together.

Name: Terra Location: St Clair West, Toronto, Ontario The basics: 8 months, rented | 700 square feet Terra’s apartment is one part plant conservatory, one part friendship coven and one part personal sanctuary. After apartment hopping around Toronto, Terra settled into her new space. Taking root physically and metaphorically, she has filled her apartment with plenty of plants and tons of good vibes.

Name: Lauren, Tulip the cat and Alfee the rabbit Location: Stamford, Connecticut The basics: 4 months, rented | 450 square feet Lauren’s lovely little studio is bright and calm. Using white to keep things light and airy helps the space feel open, but the personal accents keep the space from feeling impersonal or static.

Name: Lauren Location: Montreal — Quebec, Canada The basics: 1.5 years, rented | 500 square feet Lauren struck rental market gold with her Montreal studio. With the high ceilings, moldings and that window the space is full of glamorous antique charm. With a clever layout and personal touches, Lauren has played up all of the best aspects of the space, creating a sun-drenched dream that looks for bigger than its 500 feet.

Name: Anne, her husband and their 4 dogs Location: Paradise Cove — Malibu, California The basics: 2.5 years owned, 1,200 square feet Anne’s home is as cute as it is fun! Designed to weather the elements as well as four dogs, everything is durable and inviting, creating a bright, lived-in feel. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I bought our mobile home two and a half years ago from Pamela Anderson.

Name: Melina Location: West Village, New York — New York The basics: 9 months, rented | 300 square feet If you’ve spent anytime hunting for housing on Craigslist, you know that “cozy” spaces so rarely are. Not so in the case of Melina’s West Village studio. Like something out of a TV show with an excellent acoustic soundtrack, her studio is welcoming, warm and totally charming.

Name: Eva, her fiancée and their cat Location: Williamsburg — Brooklyn, New York The basics: 6.5 years, rented | 450 square feet Eva has been in her studio for almost seven years, which is like 64 in renter’s years. But it all makes sense when you consider she’s acquired two of the most covetable New York real estate finds: a space to oneself (at least, until your partner moves in) and a very chill landlord.

Name: Sarah and Jordan Location: Elkhart, Iowa The basics: 2 years, owned | 160 square feet Sarah harbored tiny house fantasies. She and her husband turned her dreams into reality. The pair set up shop in an adorable tiny home, finding cute ways to maximize space at every turn. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: My husband, Jordan, and I live in this 160 square foot tiny house, which we’ve dubbed Lil Blue.

Name: Courtney, her fiancé Gregg and their pets Location: Decatur, Illinois The basics: 3 months, owned | 250 square feet How’s this for a post-graduation plan? Buy a camper, fix it up, move into it and live a more minimalist lifestyle. Sound good? Well that’s exactly what Courtney and Gregg did after graduating in 2016. Tell us a little about your home and the people who live there: We purchased our camper in September of 2016 with the intent to remodel and move into it.

Name: Kayte and Emerald the cat Location: Bed-Stuy — Brooklyn, New York The basics: 2 months, rented, 350 square feet Kayte and her cat have packed plenty of style and storage (and stylish storage) into their small, yet light-filled Brooklyn studio. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I live in Bed-Stuy, a diverse Brooklyn neighborhood. Here the tree-lined streets frame historic brownstones and bodegas are found on every corner.

Name: Julien, her husband and three daughters Location: Milton —Ontario, Canada The basics: 12 years, owned | 2,000 square feet Julien’s home is full of fascinating, functional and visually interesting art yet it doesn’t have a “hands off” feel. It is designed with her family in mind, encouraging exploration and celebrating everyone’s personalities.

Name: Kelly, her husband, their 4 children and 2 dogs Location: Lancashire, United Kingdom The basics: 10 1/2 years, owned | 2,000 square feet Kelly’s home is full of cheery pink, upcycled finds and DIY projects big and small. Kelly and her husband Derrick have been able to adjust their home to their growing family without much outside help.

Name: Angel, her boyfriend and their cats Location: Seattle, Washington The basics: 1 year, rented | 550 square feet Angel’s Seattle studio is super open but short on storage. With some creative thinking and smart purchases, Angel and her boyfriend were able to make the most out of their shared space. Name: Kaitlin and her dachshund Dilbert Location: Highlands — Denver, Colorado The basics: 2 months, rented, 520 square feet When hunting for her apartment, Kaitlin wanted a space that was as lovely inside as out. She found exactly what she was looking for with her super cute studio in a dog friendly neighborhood. Good news for her and great news for Dilbert!

Name: James & Jen Location: Atlanta, Georgia The basics: Purchased March 2016, completed March 2017 | 125 square feet It still seems a little unreal that people can live on busses without being part of a family band or going on a very intense field trip inside the human body. Not only are James and Jen are living the dream on their rehabbed school bus, they’re slowly winning over the toughest of home critics, their cat.

Name: Alana, her partner and cat Location: Berlin, Germany The basics: 9 months, rented | 1,800 square feet Seeking a slower pace and a bit more space, Alana and her partner relocated from New York to Berlin. They found this airy stunner and set about making it the perfect place to work, entertain and relax. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I live with my partner, Adam, and our awesome cat Olive.

Name: Carina and her roommate Claudia Location: Williamsburg — Brooklyn, New York The basics: 11 months, rented | 400 square feet Carina and Claudia’s Williamsburg apartment is colorful, fun and full of secret weirdness. They’ve made their first “Grown Up” apartment functional and pretty without taking the whole thing too seriously.

Name: Ben and his family Location: Alameda, California The basics: 4 years, owned | 1,500 square feet Ben and has family tackled the mammoth undertaking of renovating and updating a Victorian home but found that living in the home during the reno helped them create a space more personally tailored to their needs. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: We bought the house in 2010, knowing it was in need of a major renovation.

Name: Anne, her husband Nate, their cat Kitty Fat Pants and dog Delta Burke Location: Irish Channel — New Orleans, Louisiana The basics: Two years, owned | 2,000 square feet Anne, a freelance writer, and her husband Nate relocated to New Orleans after visiting the city and being charmed by all of the people, places and things. Their shotgun-layout home is full of personal touches and fantastic wall treatments.

Name: Jenny Location: South Boston, Massachusetts The basics: 2 years, owned | 780 square feet Jenny’s condo is a balance of bright and poppy colors with sleek and sophisticated shapes and textures. After saying yes to the space when it was but a shadow of its current self, she set off to slowly and deliberately make this house her home.

Name: Miranda Location: Jing An District – Shanghai, China The basics: 2 years, rented | around 700 square feet Miranda’s historic lane home is full of antiques, high ceilings and her traditional Chinese dress collection. The layout of the apartment complex let her get to know her neighbors and build a sense of community.

Name: Stella, her partner and pet Location: Gainesville, Florida The basics: Two years, rented | 1,200 square feet Stella’s home is full of bright yellows, rich pinks and purples and some lovely plants soaking up all of that Florida sunshine! Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: We try to fit in unique details from all around the world. My boyfriend and I love our house, as well as our cat Sal Pacino who rules over the both of us.

Name: Hannah, Jake and their daughter Cyprus Location: Columbus, Ohio The basics: 8 months, rented | 1,214 square feet Hannah’s home is a funky textile dreamland with plenty of space for her young family. You can find charming boho touches throughout the space that feels so warm and lived in, it’s hard to believe they’ve been living here for under a year.

Name: Bridget, her husband, teenage son and one dog Location: Missoula, Montana The basics: 18 months, owned | 2,000 square feet Bridget’s home is warm, inviting, and relaxing. The natural light, white walls and layered rugs give the space a welcoming and open feel, perfect for lounging and hosting. Name: Leanne Location: St. Charles, Illinois The basics: 2.5 years, rented After sharing a much larger space for a few years, Leanne decided to downsize in order to live on her own. She’s made the most of her space, customizing it to fit her needs and style.

Name: Darien, Matt, and two rescue dogs, Jagger and Wile E. Location: Culver City — Los Angeles, California The basics: 2 years, rented |3,000 square feet What started as a simple search for garage space turned into a very lucky home find. Darien and Matt not only found the motorcycle and car storage they were looking for, they found an airy and cool living space as well.

Name: Eva, Jack, their 3 year old Eleanor and Robin Williamson the cat Location: Dorchester — Boston, Massachusetts The basics: Four years, owned 1,100 square feet Eva and Jack’s space is like a cozy and welcoming art gallery. After bouncing back from a fire that destroyed most of their belongings, they’ve created a home that feels stylish and exceedingly personal.

Name: Mohammed & Sally Location: Point Breeze/East End — Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania The basics: Two years, rented | 1,065 square feet Mohammed’s Pittsburgh apartment is full of the kind of antique charm that seems to only fall into the hands of TV characters and beach read heroines. Not one to rest on the laurels of enviable wood paneling, he has filled the space to the brim with stunning finds and impressive DIY upgrades. Can we move in?

Name: Jay Location: Montclair — Denver, Colorado The basics: 5 years, owned | 2,000 square feet Jay’s 110 year old bungalow has quite the history. Once a modest house amongst flashier homes, it has weathered different misfortunes and poor design choices to land in Jay’s hands. Jay and his partner are investing time, love and labor into restoring the home to its former glory.

Name: Janna, her husband and two other families Location: Mohave Valley, Arizona The Basics: Around 3 months, owned 2,400 square feet Building a house from scratch is tough. Building a house from scratch that is going to eventually be the vacation home of three families is extra tough. Janna’s vacation home manages to blend style, function, fun and enough space for a whole host of people.

Name: Iná Location: Copacabana — Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The basics: 2 + years renting | 200 square feet Iná’s small studio is so open and bright, it looks much more expansive than its small footprint would lead you to believe. Yellow pops out against crisp white, while plants add some earthiness. Tell us a little about your home and the people who live there: My home is a tiny, 200 square foot studio apartment. Although it is very small, it has everything I actually need.

Name: Will, Florent and Dolly, a Mini Holland Lop bunny Location: West Hollywood, California The basics: 10 months renting Will and Florent’s Hollywood abode is full of small, unexpected moments of delight (spot the bunny!) and fantastic found pieces that give the space a welcoming feel. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I live here with my boyfriend, Florent, and our Mini Holland Lop bunny, Dolly.

Name: Stephen and Bobby, their son Cole and beta fish Riley Location: Beacon Hill/Georgetown — Seattle, Washington The basics: 7 years owned | 1,200 square feet and 800 square feet Airbnb Stephen and Bobby’s home is designed to beat the Seattle winter blahs while making the most of the city’s gorgeous summer. A mix of texture and color help create a cozy, mid-century modern oasis in the Emerald City.

Name: Kate & Joff Reid Location: Southsea, England The basics: 2 years, Rented | 580 square feet Kate and Joff’s Southsea home is cute but not precious, curated but not staged, pink but not aggressively pink. Basically, they’ve mastered the art of balancing personality, fun and design all in one adorable space.

Name: James and two cats, Otis and Faisca Location: Ridgewood — Queens, New York The basics: 4 years renting | 650 square feet James’ moody glam apartment is a visual feast. There are so many little treasures tucked in next to bold pieces, all against dreamily dark walls.

Name: Angela & James Location: Westend — Vancouver, Canada The Basics: Rented for 1.5 years |580 square feet Angela and James settled into their first shared apartment in Vancouver and set to putting their design skills to good use. A designer and an architect, their home is carefully thought out and balances minimalism and warmth to great effect.

Name: RJ and Francis, 2 Dogs, 2 Fish, 1 Tortoise Location: Miracle Mile — Los Angeles, California The Basics: Rented for 3 years | 1,250 square feet RJ and Francis’s home is classic L.A. cool. They’ve managed to blend their styles without (too much) argument and even uncovered a surprise space!

Name: Sara Location: Singapore The basics: Rented for 2 years We got a glimpse of Sara and Nick three years ago when they were in Cambridge and now the globe-trotting couple has landed in Singapore. Two years in they are focused on creating a home that feels like them. Tell us a little about your home and the people who live there: We moved to Singapore from Cambridge (check out our first home tour on Apartment Therapy) and into faculty housing.

Name: Matthew & Joanna the Chihuahua Location: West Seattle — Seattle, Washington The basics: Rented for 1 year | 1,000 square feet Matthew’s cottage was run down and overrun with ivy when he first purchased it and he turned it into a boldly bright beaut of a home. An impressive mix of upcycling, thrifting and plant-parenthood, “gay gardens” is chock full of vibrant and interesting pieces.

Name: Madeline Location: Upper West Side — New York, New York Madeline and Michael have blended their respective styles to make a cozy and comfortable home in a charming brownstone. From Madeline: It’s a cozy little place on the fifth floor of a walk-up converted brownstone on what we think is the most beautiful street in New York.

Name: Anouska Location: Dulwich — London, United Kingdom Anouska, an interior designer, and her partner have taken the already good bones of a nineteenth century English terrace house and truly made them sing. The perfectly balanced use of bold colors, beautiful furniture and charming accents give the home a bright sophisticated look.

Name: Eileen and Walter the golden retriever Location: Upper East Side — New York, New York The basics: 5.5 years, rented We love the charming and approachable functionality of Eileen’s apartment. Fitting a busy life AND a golden retriever into a New York studio is no easy feat, and Eileen manages to do it with style. Tell Us a Little About Yourself: I’m a native New Yorker who had lived in the diaspora (Boston & DC) for 10 years before returning to NYC.

Name: Julie Location: Tulsa, Oklahoma In 2012, we bought a basically abandoned three story brick building through our family real estate company. Over the next three years, we (along with a team of professionals) renovated the building while doing everything we could to preserve its character. The end result is 24 apartments that combine the charm of 100+ year-old brick walls with the warmth of solid oak cabinets and hand-built custom finishes.

Name: Kate Location: Brooklyn Heights — Brooklyn, New York I live in a two bedroom, pre-war federal-style townhouse in Brooklyn Heights, as one of four owners in the building. I moved here four years ago from a studio in Gramercy to get more space, but mostly because I love the sense of history in both the apartment (it’s got thick moldings and an old marble fireplace), and the neighborhood. For me, walking through the streets on a Saturday is an exciting activity in itself.

Name: Georgiana Location: Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle — Washington, D.C. I live on the 7th floor of a building built in 1923 in Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle neighborhood (I can never tell which it is), there are definitely some quirks to such an old building, the elevator for example is terrifying – a fair-weather metal box that is not built for anyone that has an aversion to elevators that may or may not work.

Name: Kelsey Location: Washington, D.C. Sara and I moved in together almost two years ago. I had lived in shared houses ever since college and was thrilled to create a home with Sara where we could welcome our friends and family and offer a little calm in the storm of D.C. Our home is filled with vintage pieces and IKEA finds that we have upgraded with modern details like knobs and pulls from Rejuvenation and Anthropologie.

Name: Jess Location: Duboce — San Francisco, California I moved into this one bedroom almost four years ago and shared it with my best friend. It’s only 500 square feet, so by the time that I took over the space fully, I was ready to make it my own. My style is very bright, bohemian and eclectic. I’m a story producer at Pinterest so I love having things around me that tie back to stories, like a place or trip.

Name: Cherie Location: Portland, Oregon Myself, my boyfriend Nick, and our three cats Charlie, Sue, and Gigi (yes 3 cats, I know we’re crazy), plus our beta fish Fajita live in our one-bedroom apartment in the Laurelhurst neighborhood. We’ve been here for over four years now and it truly feels like home. Our neighborhood is the best; we’re two blocks away from Laurelhurst park and can walk to all our favorite restaurants and bars.

Name: Tommaso Location: Union City, New Jersey Ok, so I live in my one bedroom apartment with my “son in a dog suit”, Harley, (he really calls the shots around here.) I’ve lived in Union City for about a year. It is the next city North from Jersey City. I recently finished the broadway show “Jersey Boys” and before that I was on tour for a few years, so once I bought this place, I was really ready to fill it up with all the ideas running around in my head.

Name: Eric and Lori Location: North High Shoals, Georgia Eric and Lori’s Georgia farmhouse is filled with so much color and texture but stops short of overloading you with whimsy. Each room has its own distinct personality, and we’d happily set up shop in any of them! From Eric: Our home was built around 1898 in North High Shoals, GA just a stone’s throw from the Apalachee River.
