House Calls

Name: Jess Location: Ravenswood — Chicago, Illinois When I moved to Chicago for a job I looked at a ton of apartments. I had a couple showings on a Sunday I was in town, but Chicago was hit with one of the worst snow storms that day and all the brokers canceled on me but one. I told him I really wanted to see the place and he said if I made my way up to the apartment from the Loop he would be there as well.

Name: Danny Location: West End — Portland, Maine My wife and I live on the historic Deering Street in Portland, Maine. The building was built in the mid-1800s and our unit is around 950 square feet. We have 10 foot ceilings and black marble fireplaces in both the living room and bedroom. We recently moved from Wisconsin, where we lived in another mid-1800s home. In January, I started my own design studio and our apartment doubles as my workspace.

Name: Elizabeth Location: Brooklyn Heights — Brooklyn, New York I recently moved into this charming (very tiny) two-bedroom apartment in a beautiful pre-war building. This being the largest place I’ve lived in on my own, I was excited by the opportunity to apply all of my favorite decorating styles in one space. From dark, moody walls to cheeky wallpaper, the space reflects my belief that homes can be fun yet sophisticated at the same time.

Name: Silvia Rotundo Location: Yarraville — Victoria. Australia My name is Silvia and I live in a suburb called Yarraville in Victoria, Australia. My home is a post-war brick bungalow that I share with my husband Frank along with our beloved toy poodle Sofia. Two years ago we decided to extend and renovate our home after finding we needed more space prompted by my career change.

Name: Phoebe Location: Charlotte, North Carolina My husband and I one day decided, “hey lets start looking at houses” we didn’t realize that we were going to find the house we loved a few weeks later, bid on it, win it, and then begin remodeling it. We found this 1200 square foot foreclosure in Charlotte and without even seeing it in person, we told our realtor that we wanted to place a bid on it. The annoying part?

Name: Mary Location: Madison, Mississippi Our cottage style home is a cheerful, inviting place with a colorful, tropical vibe. My inspiration comes from Caribbean roots as my mother was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The house is small, 1,485 square feet, but full of personality.

Name: Betsy Location: Savannah, Georgia Our 1,600 square foot home is a 1920 Aladdin, Co. “kit house” bungalow. My husband and I bought it last fall after moving to Savannah, GA from Brooklyn, NY in search of more space and a quieter life. Though it was in rough shape when we bought it, bringing it back from the brink has been a joy — and an adventure.

Name: Denae Location: Richmond Heights — St. Louis, Missouri St.Louis wasn’t in our plan of where to settle down, but this affordable community with amazing schools, plenty of diversity and adorable old houses has slowly stolen our hearts. It has such a small town feel in the middle of a city with loads of history and art around every corner that would make even the biggest hipster swoon. In making it our home, we really feel it needs to be an extension of us.

Name: Jennifer & Abbie Location: Carolina Beach, North Carolina We live in a beach community that is growing quickly and people are building giant houses and cutting down all the trees. In an effort to show people that you can live in a smaller space, we built two container homes that are located two blocks from the ocean. People were skeptical at first but seem to be coming around now that we are finished.

Name: Helen Location: Bristol, United Kingdom As soon as my husband and I stepped into this house, we knew it was the one for us. Not even the dodgy electrics, lack of central heating and pre-1970s decor could put us off — some hard work was a fair pay off for the welcome that we felt from the house, plus its stunning view.

Name: Annie Lee Location: West Village, New York City Everyone knows that studio apartment living can be tough. But wedding planner Annie Lee worked magic in her small space, creating distinct areas for different living needs. Filled with sumptuous materials and flirty florals, this small space oozes sophistication. (And has spectacular views!) I’m a wedding planner in NYC, my company is Daughter of Design (because I’m a daughter of an interior designer!

Name: Kimberly Location: Arcadia — Phoenix, Arizona My boyfriend Jose and I (as well as our dog, bb, and cat, leopold) live in this cozy mid-century modern Ralph Haver patio home in sunny Phoenix, AZ. Ralph Haver was a well known mid century modern architect here in Phoenix in the 50s and 60s. The home was built in the 60s and features funky perforated and paneled walls as well as a round kitchen! silversmithRachel Simmons Thanks, Kimberly!

Name: Jessica Location: Portage Park — Chicago, Illinois My husband, two feline companions and I live in a spacious, open concept apartment on Chicago’s Northwest Side (Portage Park) The apartment is roughly 1100 square feet and is one of two units in a vintage brick building. It’s a cozy apartment with lots of day light and a funky angular layout. I am currently wrapping up my degree in interior design and love to work with patterns and textures.

Name: Stephanie Location: Bridgehampton, New York I recently renovated and designed in Bridgehampton, NY. The house was a labor of love and my first real design project. The house is an old farm-house that I updated and made into what we call, The Beach Barn. I began by removing outdated fans, track lighting, updating the kitchen and bathrooms, staining the yellow pine floors to a beautiful light stain, updating all of the trim and adding an entire finished basement.

Name: Jil Location: Leslieville — Toronto, Ontario The loft is in the Wrigley chewing gum factory in Leslieville, Toronto. The Wrigley has the oldest windows in Toronto and is one of the only true hard lofts left in the city. We rent out our space during the day to lots of photographers – as the space is quite open and bright. When we moved in, we painted the entire space white to make it a clean and crisp canvas for our design style.

Name: Caroline Location: Chelsea — New York, New York I’m a jewelry designer of Icarus + Co. by trade and an artist by hobby. I live and work in a 500 square foot studio in Chelsea, New York. People are usually shocked when they hear how small it actually is. There is so much crammed in here without feeling crowded, it makes the place seem much bigger. I purchased the apartment back in 2011.

Name: Peti Location: Financial District — New York, New York My home is a 750 square foot one bed/one bath apartment in the Financial District. It is also my workspace for my eponymous interior design business, Peti Lau. My home is a culmination of all of my life experiences; my travels, my work, my interests, my past hobbies, and my current obsessions. It is an eclectic mix of exotic finds paired with tailored accents.

Name: Sally & Cameron Location: Toronto — Ontario, Canada Cameron and I live in a 958 square foot condo. He teaches improv, and I’m a copywriter and mid-century design addict. I grew up in older homes, including a convict-built house in Tasmania, but after years of renting I’d finally had it with century-old plumbing and wiring. I mix high and low, old and new, mass and handmade.

Name: Theresa Delaney and her boyfriend James Location: Tucson, Arizona My boyfriend and I live just north of central Tucson. We love being a quick ten-minute drive from downtown or the University of Arizona, and minutes from our favorite spots in the foothills. The large yard, quiet neighborhood and desert scenery don’t hurt, either! We share our home with two rowdy, furniture-loving dogs: the ultimate design challenge, especially for someone that loves bright, neutral interiors!

Name: Ashley Flotte Location: Plano, Texas I live with my college-sweetheart husband and our two sassy babies (ages three and one) in our two-story Plano, Texas home, built in 1992 in a traditional style with red brick, black shutters, and a charming front porch packed with rocking chairs. Our first viewing of it when we were house-hunting three years ago was at dusk, complete with glowy romantic light streaming through all the windows.

Name: Cristina and Lucia Location: Brooklyn, NYC My name is Cristina, and I am 26 year old Spanish girl living in a beautiful loft in Brooklyn, New York. I am a follower of Apartment Therapy (we follow soooo many of your advice and tips!!). I share this huge loft with my sister Lucia, an amazing interior designer. Our loft is one of the apartments of the Mckibbin Lofts in Bushwick, very famous for their stories and big roof parties.

Name: Vincenzo & Alexandra Location: Park Slope South, Brooklyn, New York We bought this top floor apartment six years ago. It was the first we saw and we stopped searching; we fell in love with it right away. We had found what we were dreaming of: light, quiet, new construction, big rooms, and an amazing outdoor space. A place where we could raise a family, have breakfast and supper al fresco, throw sunset cocktail parties and grow plants, trees and an herb garden.

Name: Maia Location: Beverly Hills, California Of all the cool neighborhoods for a single 32 year old to live, Beverly Hills might not strike you as the most obvious. It’s especially curious when you consider that I grew up in “the valley” (the San Fernando one) and moving here is the equivalent of someone from Brooklyn moving to the Upper East Side—it’s just not something we do.

Name: Victoria Location: Dallas, Georgia We bought our home 3,200 square foot home in Dallas, Georgia the year we got married. We wanted to be near the city, but still enjoy the beautiful country. We are five minutes from the lake and 40 minutes to Atlanta. When we started decorating our home, we wanted to make sure that it was about more than trends and that it really expressed our personalities. It was more important for us to have people walk in and feel at home.

Name: Megan & David Location: Brooklyn, New York We’re Megan and David and we love our cozy, bright apartment. We live in a one bedroom, one bath apartment in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The amount of natural light throughout the day is my favorite part of our home. We have a great view out the north and south windows as well. Our place has two covered balconies, (one off the kitchen, the other off the bedroom) in-unit washer/dryer, and private elevator.

Name: Hilary Location: Back Bay/South End — Boston, Massachusetts My couch, purchased from Zonal Furniture (R.I.P.) in Hayes Valley in San Francisco, California is oddly my pride and joy. I mean, who wouldn’t love a couch made from sustainable materials, delivered by local neighborhood drivers, sold by a Canadian ex-pat from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan? Maybe it’s become my pride and joy because it fits perfectly in my tiny rental studio apartment in Boston, where I live now.

Name: Steph Location: Silverlake — Los Angeles, California I moved into this studio apartment in Silver Lake, CA about a year and a half ago after some very tough years financially. My friend was moving to the Bay Area with her now soon to be husband so I was able to get the apartment before it went on the market. I figured that since she had so many great life experiences in this place that maybe some of those positive vibes would stick around in the space.

Name: Tara Location: Upper West Side — New York, New York Our NYC duplex apartment occupies the garden level and rear parlor of an UWS brownstone. It is home to my husband, myself and our two kids, and also home to our design studio Oddopolis.

Name: Kristiana Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada I live in a teeny, tiny 502 square foot loft in the St-Henri neighbourhood of Montreal. My building, which used to be a tobacco factory, is almost 100 years old. While living downtown is certainly convenient, small space living definitely has some challenges! My interior style is all about being functional in my small space. I’ve taken advantage of the walls as much as possible, and created storage where I had none.

Name: Desiree Location: Steamboat Springs, Colorado My boyfriend and I live in our little 300 square foot apartment here in Steamboat Springs. We rent the space (it’s expensive to buy here) so I’m trying to make the best of a space I can’t paint or remodel. It’s a loft apartment so you walk in and the ground floor is the living room, kitchen and bathroom and there are stairs that lead up to the bedroom.

Name: Patrick & Anna Location: Tequesta, Florida [currently traveling across US] Last we were published, my husband and I were working on down-sizing to a 28′ Starcraft camper, in which we decided to get out of the hustle for a while and travel the US with our two children, Harlee Faye (she’s 2), Declan (he’s almost 1), and our pit bull Gypsy Lou. We’ve since made it from Florida to Utah, and are loving the freedom the smaller space (and a traveling home) gives us!

Name: Summer Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada My creative little haven. This is a rental apartment in the core of downtown Toronto, just a few blocks from Dundas Square. I chose the location due to the short walking distance to work and the great outside space (for my dog). I’ve always been interested in interior decorating but I never wanted my home to feel like a magazine. I treasure comfort and livability. You can see my personality in every inch of my space.

Name: Meghan Location: Charleston, South Carolina This is the first place that we’ve lived that has truly felt like “home.” When we first moved in, we vowed to shape this space as a retreat from the outside world. We have filled every corner with things that we love; every piece has a story or connection outside of itself.

Name: Valery Location: Brooklyn Heights — Brooklyn, New York This space is important to me in so many ways—it is my first apartment on my own after the end of my marriage—a home and respite for myself and my 5-year-old son; emblematic of renewal and growth. I aimed to create a space that exuded warmth, and took advantage of the aerie third floor location—which gives the impression of living amongst the trees.

Name: Lisa Location: Yamba — New South Wales, Australia We just moved a year ago from the city to a small coastal town and built our dream home. We have begun to lead a simpler life, away from all the crazy of the city. My style is minimalist, Scandi style. I love black and white.

Name: Helena Location: Springhill — Belgrade, Montana After almost 5 months of moving around, I finally wanted to create a space all my own. Having a “cabin in the woods” has long been a dream of mine (does anyone NOT have this dream?), I was so excited to fill it (but not too much, you know, because minimalism and such…) with things that I loved, or reminded me of people or places that were important to me.

Name: Melody Location: Salt Lake City, Utah Thanks to Apartment Therapy we had plenty of ideas when we remodeled our downtown 1906 SLC duplex five years ago. Utah is not known for its style, so we ended up doing most everything ourselves (since most contractors couldn’t understand our aesthetic). The renovation took us two years, lots of heartache, and endless DIY thinking.

Name: Tuva & Lars Location: Tøyen — Oslo, Norway What we love most about our apartment, and one of the main reasons we bought it four years ago, is the light. It’s a third floor south-west facing apartment with windows on three sides. Lots of windows. And lots of light throughout the day. It makes the apartment feel airy and fresh.

Name: Victoria Location: A Small Country Village, England I bought my home in 2014, it’s a 1970s semi-detached bungalow in a lovely friendly street in a pretty village in the south of the UK. I’m very lucky to have wonderful neighbours and everyone on the street looks out for each other – it’s one of the best things about country living.

Name: Casey & Savannah Location: Nashville, Tennessee We are Casey and Savannah, best friends, business partners, roommates and Airbnb hosts. Our home was purchased by Casey’s parents and we rent it from them. It has four bedrooms and two bathrooms and is 1,963 square feet. It was built in 1945, which made for lots of charm, but also many problems when it was first purchased.

Name: Violeta Location: County Limerick, Ireland My home was featured on Apartment Therapy six years ago and a lot of new things happened since then in our home and garden. We went crazy in the hallway and painted it all black! I just think hallways are always neglected by people and that’s a big mistake. A pop of color can go a long way. Why not to decorate it like you would do in your living room? My husband’s office is not his anymore. I took it over.

Name: Hannah Location: Chicago, Illinois Two years ago my husband and I and our winsome Goldendoodle, Hadley moved out of a typical, dark, old Chicago three-flat apartment and into this beautiful, new construction condo near the hip neighborhood of Logan Square. My husband, Josh is in medical school and I work from home as a Creative Director so it was very important to us to have a bright, sunny, and inspiring space to spend our days studying and working!

Name: Hannah Location: Oakland, California This 650 square foot live/work studio is located in an artisan facility in West Oakland, CA. I originally moved in because the space could easily function as both my home and work space. As my company grew and moved into a proper office, I was finally able to claim the space as my own. Now the furnishings consist of a healthy balance of IKEA basics, vintage gems and tons of plants (over 40+ and counting!

Location: U Street Corridor — Washington, D.C. I live up the road from President Obama and my place is almost 1,000 square feet. I decorated on a budget. I started my company while simultaneously moving into a new place, and it really leaves the decorating budget to a minimum. I prefer neutrals such as whites and grays for your bones, i.e. couch and chairs, and then like to add color elsewhere. That way you have more options for trading out pillows and fabrics down the road.

Name: Mandi Location: North End — Tacoma, Washington My husband and I bought a major fixer-upper a few years ago. It was that magical combination of a clear vision, a husband who trusted me and a few family members with construction know-how. The house was very willy-wonka (the floors were so sloped it was an experience walking through the house), pink-carpet in the bathroom, brown shag rug in the living area, and a kitchen layout that was so, so awful.

Name: Sverre & Maren Ingeborg Location: Ottestad, Norway We live in a PINK victorian house on the country side in Norway (1.5 hours from the capital). The house and outbuildings are 2,000 square feet, and we both live and work together from our amazing 99 year old place. We have many trees just as old as the house and a sweet yard. The outbuildings will soon contain our small film production company.

Name: Patricia Location: Antwerp, Belgium I live in a 135 square meter apartment (the internet tells me that’s 1453 square feet) together with my boyfriend Dieter and my cat George. I’m the owner of online boutique Lily and The Lady and a freelancer, Dieter is an architect who has his own firm. Our apartment is a 1930s building on a beautiful wide street in Antwerp, Belgium. It is the first home we purchased, and we’ve been renovating it with love for the past two years.

Name: Fabian & David Location: New Haven, Connecticut We are Fabian from Germany and David from the United States, two doctoral students at Yale University, and we turned our student rental into a modern, minimalist apartment. Both of us work in the social sciences but also have a casual interest in architecture and interior design.

Name: Manson Location: Mount Washington — Los Angeles, California Nestled in a bohemian valley of Mount Washington in Los Angeles, sits a tiny 600 square foot house. Built in 1922, the house hangs between a steep slope and a giant pine tree. When I bought it as a foreclosure in 2010, the property was dilapidated with an illogical layout and disproportionate rooms. For the renovation, I was inspired by a childhood fantasy of living in a treehouse.

Name: Monica & Adrian Location: London, England We are Monica (a Spanish Singer with British origins) and Adrian (a Londoner cameraman with Jamaican origins) we are very happy to show you our little apartment, called The Green House. We fell in love in Barcelona (Monica’s town) and after seven months of a long distance relationship, we decide to live together and build our own loving space in the city of London.

Name: Saria & Kyle Location: Montavilla — Portland, Oregon When Kyle and I first moved into our 250 square foot studio behind a large main house, it was a mess. The concrete floors had spilled paint all over, the walls were halfway painted a sky blue, and it had looked like it was abused and abandoned for years. We did a huge overhaul. It was originally built to be an artist studio so it already had track lighting and a beautiful large built in workspace area, with drawers and shelves.

Name: Matt Location: Lower East Side — New York, New York Hi! I’m Matt, and I’m a designer based in New York City. My current focus is on creating organized spaces within the home using custom, 3D printed solutions. I work from home — and home, currently, is a 550-square-foot rental in the Lower East Side. After I sold my studio a little over a year ago, I was looking for something that was different, had as much space as humanly possible and was interesting.

Name: Gabby & Adam Location: Distillery District — Toronto, Canada We moved into our 497 square foot condo in the historic Distillery District in downtown Toronto almost a year ago. Moving into a smaller space than our previous apartment, we spent a lot of time thinking about items and furniture that we needed and loved in our everyday lives. Everything in our apartment has function or bring us joy.

Name: Brooke Location: Chinandega, Nicaragua My husband and I moved to Nicaragua over 10 years ago to open an office of a local real estate company, Aurora Leon Realty. We recently finished our “passion project”… we resurrected a 50 year old barn that originally was located on neighboring farm in Northern Nicaragua.

Name: Drew Location: Addison, Texas My name is Drew and I reside in Addison, Texas. I work in the medical device industry but have a love for interior design. I’m mainly inspired by the mid-century modern era and Bauhaus movement. My current home is a 650 square foot loft studio. My home features concrete ceilings, hardwood and stained/polished concrete flooring, and exposed duct work. The raw elements of my home are what I adore and love.

Name: Amber & Ryan Location: Downtown — Los Angeles, California We ended up with a lease on this massive two story industrial loft inside a 1900s factory building completely by chance 18 months ago, when our best friends had to move out unexpectedly after investing thousands of dollars into building it out as a living space. They just wanted their investment to stay in the family.

Name: Monica Location: Seattle, Washington Hi! My name is Monica Bennett and please let me introduce you to my Silver Girl — my beautiful 2012, 27′ International Signature Airstream travel trailer. This beauty accompanies us on all of our Pacific Northwest non-stop outdoor adventures. She offers up a cozy and relaxing retreat after a day spent outdoors trekking through lush green moss carpeted rain forests, to fly fishing some of the most crystal clear rivers.

Name: Robin Location: Cambridgeport — Cambridge, Massachusetts What can I say about our home… in short our home is our dream home but funny enough it started out as a space that we expected to be living in only a few years. We purchased our home, a 1700 square feet, three bed, three bath condo in a converted school (from the early 1900s) right after the birth of our first son. We bought the space pre-construction and sadly let the developer make most of the decisions.

Name: Rachel Location: Bed-Stuy — Brooklyn, New York In the fall of 2014, my husband Eric and I started planning a relocation from Houston to Brooklyn so that I could take a job as a Senior Lifestyle Editor at BuzzFeed. We were going to be finding a place to live pretty much long-distance, but we looked at apartments in the city on a trip there in October of that year. We found a place in Harlem I really liked — it was a high-rise modern, spacious, had nice views.

Name: Danielle & Ryan Location: Fraser/Main — Vancouver, British Columbia Our overall style is minimalist and clean but comfy. We are most inspired by mid-century modern pieces and shapes but like to add bohemian touches for warmth. We also love to freely mixed silver, gold, and brass for a casual and unpretentious feel.

Name: Joseph Location: Grand Lake — Oakland, California We live in the beautiful Grand Lake district in Oakland, California, across the street from the iconic Grand Lake Theater. Our studio apartment is about 300 square feet with a lofted sleeping area and we have lived here for about two years. Our neighborhood is full of great shops, restaurants and bars, and an amazing farmer’s market on Saturdays.

Name: Mariska Location: Amsterdam I am about to embark on a new adventure in Amsterdam and would like to share my 117 square meter (1,259 square feet) home, which I completely renovated. I bought it 10 years ago and immediately fell in love with it because it had a fireplace. The house was quite a mess as it had been rented out for a longer period and had not been renovated since the 70s. My style is eclectic, I love collecting art & objects.

Name: Sonia & Jason Location: Asbury Park, New Jersey We are Jason and Sonia. Jason is a graphic designer and writer, Sonia is a bartender at the local German biergarten and together we are the owners of Nomad, a travel inspired company that rents out vintage travel trailers and European style canvas tents for parties, weddings, etc. We also having a clothing line that we sell at Market at Fifth Avenue, a collective of local and national makers on the boardwalk.

Name: Sally Location: Dupont Circle — Washington, D.C. My boyfriend, John, and I have called our apartment in Dupont Circle ‘home’ for three years now. This quaint little one-bedroom is tucked inside a turn-of-the-century apartment building, located on a bustling street in Washington, D.C. Despite the busyness of our locale, inside we’ve created a cozy, peaceful retreat.

Name: Melissa Location: Central Business District — New Orleans, Louisiana My husband and I sold our 2,300 square foot house and downsized to a 1,000 square foot apartment in the heart of the Central Business District. I love all of the home tours Apartment Therapy has done in New Orleans, but haven’t found any in our neighborhood. The CBD is a booming neighborhood where empty parking lots are becoming trendy apartments, retail and restaurants.

Name: Phillip Location: Highlands — Denver, Colorado My place is about 800 square feet (I think). It’s in the LoHi section of Denver, just outside of downtown. When I moved in 3.5 years ago, mine was the only big new apartment building in the area now there are at least a dozen. It’s definitely become a pretty popular area with a ton of great restaurants. I think it’s apparent from the pictures that I like a lot of color in my space.

Name: Nicholas Location: North Loop — Minneapolis, Minnesota We’ve taken a relatively small square footage plan (740 square feet) and used every inch to its advantage. We took the blank white open space and customized each end to create several unique spaces within one. Our living space, where the sofa is moved just slightly from the wall to create a cozy office area was a must have for our work from home lifestyle.

Name: Brandon & Kate Location: Humboldt Park — Chicago, Illinois Our home is the top floor of a quaint little two-flat from 1891 in Humboldt Park Chicago. We fell in love with all the beautiful natural light that floods the apartment during the daytime and the simple white walls that were just begging for some artwork. We used to sell vintage furniture so we have a large collection of furniture and home decor to pull from.

Name: Su Location: Oakland, California I spent some time in Sweden and fell in love with the red wooden Swedish country homes. Being a designer, I always wanted to design my own home. I worked with an architect who took my vision and made it structurally sound. The materials I felt most connected to were metal and wood. After reading about prefab homes, I wanted to design a small home that felt like a cabin in the woods with the modern necessities.

Name: Dana Location: Corktown — Toronto, Canada I bought my 750 square foot 2 bedroom/2 bath loft in August and I immediately set out to make it a home. It’s located in Corktown, a historic area in Toronto which has been developing over the past few years. I grew up in the Middle East and I have a love for textiles, rugs and handmade objects. My style is a mix of eclectic, bohemian and mid-century.
